Get rid of the subforums
Totally fucking pointless having 5 subforums for consoles.
I think a single forum is more than enough.
Drilling down through 3 levels to find a single unread post is annoying.

Re: Get rid of the subforums
I dont want to frequent the vanguard or console forums, so i really would prefer the main page Video Games General Discussion forum not show unread because of vanguard or console posts... /shrug.

I agree!
I try to use the "view new posts" on the forum index but it's still annoying. There's not enough traffic to warrant the extra clickage and peeps may lose out on some advice/flames/recommendations, etc.
At most, maybe separate one forum for consoles, one for PC gaming but I still think it all works well on one forum. Crosstalk between various owners of consoles, etc is helpful.

Re: Get rid of the subforums
They were here for playing around to see what different formats look like. But thanks to the vitriol, and the nature of the board, I think I'll just leave em!
Thank you, drive through.

/shrug - don't mind them.

I like them! Although I think one general console forum is probably enough.

Re: Get rid of the subforums
The number of pages to shift through is getting idiotic. Who exactly was bitching about having to scroll down too far on the primary forum listing? I would like to leave a pile of shit on their porch.

Re: Get rid of the subforums
i might have been the first one to mention front page scrolling... i could use the manure, thanks.
i was looking for a way to hide forums, not subgroup them, though

Re: Get rid of the subforums
How do I make a suggestion without sounding like a whining complainer?
Perhaps it's not possible...
The way I'd like to see them grouped is:
PC/Console Gaming
-> PC
-> Consoles Current Gen
-> Legacy (or whatever)
MMOGs -> General Discussion (new/upcoming/whatever)
-> WoW
-> Vanguard
-> EQ2
-> EQ1
-> etc.
Online Games -> General Forum (new/upcoming/whatever)
-> OGame
-> Fallen Sword
I really think the consoles should be in a single forum because of the way it stimulates conversation around here (for better or for worse).
I think that's better than trying to cram everything under the 'Games' header.
Again, this is just a suggestion, not a complaint or derision.

Re: Get rid of the subforums
I agree.
Although there is so little discussion in the LOTRO, WOW, EQ and EQ2 forums that they could probably be lumped into one general forum... maybe have people preface new threads with the name of the game...
I definately think that each console does not need it's own forum. Most of the enjoyable console talk is the dick-swinging about which is better.
Web Games forum and subforums are just fine.

I like that - we'll find a fusion. More suggestions are good, or discussion about it.
I really had just created them spur of the moment to see what category/forum/etc nesting looked like, and how permissions on each would work.
Seperating consoles isn't a bad thing.
I also personally wish that there was a little + sign next to major 'categories' that could be expanded at will, perhaps even saved as a setting.

Re: Get rid of the subforums
I would also prefer something like this. I can understand wanting to group the forums better, but having to click through to additional pages each time does not seem like the best way to do it.pyrella wrote:I also personally wish that there was a little + sign next to major 'categories' that could be expanded at will, perhaps even saved as a setting.
Re: Get rid of the subforums
Separating Consoles and PC seems like the max the exta subforums should go.
The more sub forums, the more posts will wander and be misplaced due to discussions taking twists and turns.
Plus, the extra finger clicking to get in and out of those forums just isn't warranted.
Even between PCs and Consoles, the line is getting blurry with games like Shadowrun coming out that are both PC/360 coplay. (ok ps3 and wii won't have that benefit but still!)
I'll keep sticking posts in the Video General forum and hope for the best! (although if the PS3 official thread moves I'll track it down and Cc the other thread!
hmm, that's a thought. Is there a way to CC various posts into the extra detailed groups that people might not visit? That way people can keep posting in on general forum that works the best and then someone who likes to click a lot can go over to the individual console, PC, Variant subsubsub forums to double check if someone posted a thread there.
---
Also, on the web games forum...it's kinda nice to have them start out in thevideo general forum so people can check them out and then if they become popular, move to the Web forum which most people won't go to unless they've discovered a good game in the general video gaming forum!
obligatory note: you guys are doing a great job! : )
The example I can think of is if the comics forum was subdivided into
Comics general
-Marvel Comics
-DC Comics
-Indies
That would work but it's too much extra clicking compared to just scanning down a single forum full of topics...and you might discover something from another publisher that interest you that way (keeping in same forum)

Video Game General Discussion
General discussion about other games, links to reviews, demos, etc - let us know about whats up and coming
Moderators: noel, Zamtuk
Subforums: World of Warcraft, Vanguard - Saga of Heroes, Everquest 2, Everquest General Discussion, Lord of the Rings Online
What about how sub forums are listed there? You've got the Generic Video Games, but you can directly click links for wow, vg, eq2, eq, lotr, etc
Instead of scrolling down, they are just contained within the game forum itself.
Still one click off the main page, or are people still going to VG GD, and then to the forum of choice?

Re: Get rid of the subforums
I think the problem is subsilver2 doesn't do anything special to show when there is a new post in a subforum, but prosilver does. So the people using subsilver2 have to click twice to see where the new posts are, instead of the single click it used to take. I use prosilver, so the only issue I see is that it still takes 2 clicks to get to the console forum.pyrella wrote: What about how sub forums are listed there? Re: Get rid of the subforums
and my issue is different but related. i read video games general discussion, but almost none of the subforums. the main forum shows unread if any of the subforums have a new post, and then i have to click around to get rid of it, when all i want to know is if theres a post in general.
im not complaining though, its just productive discussion.
the moderators.
