Wow, have you seen this video demoing the engine behind crisis? Badass. (cool song as well. Who sings that?)
http://www.gamespot.com/users/tusa04/vi ... Hw5bkLvDXf
The tank busting through the building is something I want to see in the game. I could have fun just mowing down foliage with a machinegun in Crysis.
Here's some comparison shots with Unreal 3 but seeing the physics in action in the video above is impressive. Bring on the Cry 2 Engine Games!
http://www.n4g.com/pc/News-40786.aspx
The unreal 3 pics look good but the Crysis engine pics seem better to me.
U3 or Cry2, both will produce great games.

sucks to be you then.
You see, you blew that much money on a PS3 which, while having a crappy GPU, has a decent CPU to make up for it that won't be used in an innovative way until sometime in 2008.
At least the DX10 games will be out this fall so your money spent toward folding will help save the planet while people with 8800s will be able to take advantage of them at least six months before games are released for the PS3...that pretty much will do the same goddamn thing they've always done but with prettier graphics.
I'll happily upgrade to an 8800 for the DX10/Cry2 visual candy alone and based on what I see in the video, it will be worth it even if the AI ends up as dumb as you.

if you can't afford a PS3 how are you going to afford an 8800? you can't download one off of usenet. you know that, right?
too bad for you and your little post you just worked so hard on, I already have both. which, like everything else in your life, totally invalidates your efforts.
tanks running over generic level set pieces and knocking them down was done in call of duty about 5 years ago, and probably before that. you'll pardon me if I'm not amazed by real time vegetation destruction when I gatling gun an aloe plant. that game looks basically identical to far cry with a slightly upgraded renderer and a couple of tacked on hardware effects that do nothing but require people to buy new video cards.

Well first off, Crysis, as far as I am aware, will not be DX10 only. It will run on a large variety of video cards. Obviously some features like the sunbeams and dynamic soft shadows will probably be DX10 only but things like destructable foliage and buildings have nothing to do with DX10. They're simply just another feature of the engine.
So even if one wanted to buy the game they'd not be 'forced' to buy anything else such as a new video card. Or Vista.
And secondly there are DX10 cards out now that are less than $700. Even the 8800GTX can be had for less than that. Close to the $500 range if you can find one with a rebate.
http://www.crytek.com/technology/index.php?sx=eng2 for a list of the engine features (http://www.crytek.com/CryENGINE2Features.pdf for a complete list along with pretty pictures). Some good stuff there. Maybe nothing that can be considered earth-shattering but they're nice steps in the advancement of realism in a computer generated environment.
As for Call of Duty.. I don't remember but I'm sure any destructible buildings that were in there were probably part of the script and were an exception rather than the rule. Overall you can't do anything to the buildings in those types of games. In CoD2 you can't even shoot windows which is lame.
That's not to say that I don't agree that at least in the engine demo Crysis seems like it will be basically Far Cry 2. But I think you're a little off base on some of the other stuff simply because you don't like the original poster.

Red Faction had destructible environments back in 2001.
wiki wrote:One of the main "selling points" of Red Faction was the game engine's GeoMod technology, which allowed players to significantly alter and otherwise affect the surrounding terrain and buildings, either with explosives or otherwise. Past games had allowed limited alteration of the environment through scripted means, or special triggered areas which would add or remove certain predefined level elements. Red Faction was the first game to allow players relatively limitless level-altering possibilities. In fact, many of the areas in the first few levels, such as a hidden underground lake, serve little purpose other than showcasing the capabilities of the GeoMod technology.

I can't help if you're a moron that buys shit without researching it first. A buy first, whine later mentality fits your profile perfectly. Being clueless about technology, it's no wonder you don't appreciated advances. Keep reading consumer reports or whatever it is you do to get your cutting edge info and moooove along.

This is the first game based on the Cry2 engine. It will work great as an intro to what the engine is capable of.
I, for one, don't want companies to stop developing better 3D engines just because there seems to be a lack of innovation. It takes years to get these engines into games. Hopefully the design tools improve along with the engines.

DX9 vs DX10 - Hunter
First impressions... DX9 looks quite good really but it's hard to tell from a 20 second clip. DX10 is definitely noticeable but it's mostly a subtle effect.
Not sure why they didn't call it Far Cry 2. Sure looks like it from the jungle fight. Also notice how 1 shot takes out one of the palm trees. That's not exactly realistic!

Too pretty?
Re: Cry 2 Engine
Well I guess I could have started a new thread but this one seemed close enough. With the game not too far away can probably change the subject from Cry 2 Engine to Crysis.
Anyway, Crysis demo is coming out tomorrow (Oct 27th) although it's been 'leaked' a day early. Getting it now but the transfer rate is a bit slow. The download is 1.77GB.

Re: Crysis Demo
It is too much "pretty," and too little "game."
I was playing in the beta for a while, and there have been some changes...but I haven't seen any that make me want to actually buy the game. Shooting leaves and vehicles to see the realism gets old

Re: Crysis Demo
It definitely could be called Far Cry 2 at least from that demo. Which wasn't a surprise from the clips that were released before. I ran it under XP and it looked fairly decent but the highest I could set my graphics settings to were 'High' so guessing Ultra or whatever is higher (I forgot) requires Vista. Guess I'll boot that up and give it a try along with crashy (for me) Bioshock.
I played it on 'Easy' difficulty and the enemies were pretty dumb. Which is fine with me. I thought the foliage blowing was a little too 'wooden' and the trees get chopped down way too easy. Like with about 3 bullets.
Anyway if it's anything like Far Cry it gets dumb with aliens or super monsters so not sure I'll be purchasing it either. I really only found the first half of Far Cry interesting when I was sneaking around. Once the humans were out of the picture I lost interest because the enemies were stupid hard.
Boog do you know the console command, if there is one, to display frames per second?

Re: Crysis Demo
If there was a fps command, I can't remember using it. I had to screw around with settings constantly to get things running smooth for me. It sounded like it was running better in XP for most people than it worked in Vista.
I did like the weapon purchases/upgrades. Sniper rifles kick ass...plus you don't have to worry about graphic lag as much when you're hiding in the bushes blowing heads up

Console command for FPS is r_DisplayInfo=1
According to that I was getting an awesome 20 fps most of the time unless I looked up into the sky. I don't know.. It didn't really seem that low most of the time.

Try Fraps and compare the FPS results to the in-game FPS counter.Aslanna wrote:Console command for FPS is r_DisplayInfo=1

it's free and has FPS
I use the hacked version because I don't want to save images in bitmap but the free version should be fine for FPS readings:
http://www.fraps.com/
Fraps is always loaded on my system (loads when I boot Vista) and doesn't seem to slow anything down. You can turn off movies and or screenshots if you don't want to mistakenly hit an F key and start recording a movie. I have my screenshots set to my "print scrn" key so I will sometimes get an in-game screenshot and Fraps screenshots which is nice as in game screenshots sometimes eliminate the UI.

Re: Crysis Demo
I tried this demo, but for some reason it runs horribly on my computer. I frequently encounter long 30 second pauses where it sounds as if my system wants to hang up (sound starts to loop, video freeze etc) and then will recover. I'll get about 20 seconds of normal gameplay and then the same thing. My specs are: p4 3ghz HT, 1.5g ram, nvidia 7800 gt, windows xp. Tried playing it on low settings which is what it automatically detects and still get the same problem. I'll be honest, the game doesn't even look remotely good at low settings. I don't know what the gameplay is like since again, I couldn't really play it.
Surely the requirements aren't so high that my system can't even run the game at low settings. Anyone else with a setup close to mine have any problems like this?

Actually...

For the record, It looks/runs great on my system, but I agree with Aslanna. The fun meter drops to zero after all the humans are dead and I'm killing aliens again. I'm vaguely curious to check out the Aircraft carrier level just to see how well they modeled a carrier.

Re: Crysis Demo
Spent a few (or more) hours with Crysis.. Overall I thought it was well presented. It is quite cinematic in a lot of ways. I've only played through the first 4-5 missions so far. Pretty much to the point where the aliens are introduced. This game looks nice in DX9 and at high settings it's pretty playable but definitly lags at times. I doubt I'll play this under Vista/DX10 because I think it would be pretty unplayable at the highest settings even with my current system. The largest bottleneck obviously being the graphics. I think it will be the next generation of video cards before this game can be run as it was meant to be.
As you progress you move more away from the tropical beach to more foresty regions which is nice. I was getting tired of the beach setting but that was probably from playing the first mission of the demo. The maps are definitely nice and open for the most part. Linear in the sense that you have certain objectives and checkpoints to reach but other than that you're pretty much free to do what you want. Those who hate the forced tunneling of movements in something like Call of Duty would probably like this more although it does lead you to spend more time that you really need to since sometimes you're not sure how to get somewhere.
There are still some glitches, like weapons appearing stuck in floors and dumb enemies, but supposedly there will be a patch by the end of the month although I'm not sure what it will address. Also it was announced that this was designed as a trilogy so there will be two more Crysis titles coming.

Re: Crysis Demo
I'm kinda updating this thread as I play through this level...
For those that have never been aboard a carrier... Crysis does a decent job of modeling one. The few things I saw that struck me as dead wrong were the amount of space in the hallways and rooms and the munitions lying around in the hallways. Also, there would be a LOT more people in the hallways. The ladders would have been MUCH steeper > 60 degrees. The officers don't wear those formal hats aboard ship either. The bridge looked good though about half as big as it is IRL, and the amount of stairs you have to climb to get to it is about half what you'd really have to climb. Reactor area is wrong (no I won't elaborate). Granted it's a video game that's supposed to take place in 2024 so I wasn't expecting perfection, and maybe in the future a carrier will be a bit more comfortable, but it's still pretty impressive.
The game itself is pretty good. I wasn't thrilled with any of the alien stuff, but the gameplay itself makes up for it. Some of the AI is annoying once you figure it out, and it will definitely bring your system to a screeching halt, but it's still a really good game.

Re: Crysis Demo
I finally picked up the full version of the game last night, and I played up to the Core level.
I did not patch before playing, and I still had the glitched weapons in walls among a few other things. I think the biggest actual annoyance would be the constant grinding noises that some things make as they collide with other structures (such as destroyed helicopters falling into trees or buildings). It is running great, and I will probably update tonight to check out how online play is now too.
