What's Blizzard going to announce?

Post by Sylvus »

?

I've heard rumors of either Diablo III or StarCraft II. Maybe it's just me, I'm not sure if I can see Diablo III being necessary. SC II would be pretty rad though!

It's been talked about for so damn long that I forgot what it was supposed to be, but is that what has always been referred to as Ghost or was that something else?

Ghost was supposed to be a console-only shooter/tactical action type game.

From what I have been led to believe, SC2 will be a RTS.

I'm guessing SC2 as well. If it ends up being some kind of SC based MMOG or MMOFPS, look for me to become Rellix and go fanboi all over the forums.

(that won't actually happen, but I would follow the development very closely for something like that)

Anyone know the date that the announcement is actually going to be made?

BTW on the subject of Ghost. Ghost was Blizzard's answer to Splinter Cell. Lots of good info on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starcraft_ghost

from fragland.net:
Starcraft 2 confirmed?

TeamLiquid have translated a Korean article in which it is confirmed that Blizzard will indeed be announcing Starcraft 2 pretty soon:

On the 25th, according to the game developers, it has been confirmed that Blizzard Entertainment Korea (aka Blizzard Korea) will present VODs and game content at the WWI that is starting on May 19th. Also, StarCraft 2's main developers will also attend to answer some questions

It has been confirmed that StarCraft 2 is being developed in 3D, a new race has been added and existing units' characteristics will have many changes. Additional details will only be revealed to certain parts of WWI.
Actual quote from Blizzard on kotaku.com:
"We do intend to announce a new product at the Worldwide Invitational next month in Korea, and we appreciate the enthusiasm and interest in getting an advance look at what that will be, but players will have to wait until May 19th to find out more. Also, we have a very strong connection with the characters and settings of StarCraft, and we do plan to revisit that universe at some point in the future, but we don't have anything new to announce in that regard at present."
Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.

Starcraft 2 in 3D? Holy, it will blow Supreme Commander and Command and Konkelberry 3 out o' the water?

Or?

Always loved the Zergling rush and every time we played SC during LAN, many friends complained (those that were the target of the rush) that they had to sit and wait while the whole game was finishing!

Oh, and even if the fourth added race is über i will still go for my beloved ZERG!

The Zerg did so much for us veeshanites as well!

I'd be excited about any good sci-fi MMO, not just SC, but another RTS would make me yawn about as much as the plethora of fantasy MMOs do.

Nothing about Blizzards rts's could ever make me yawn. Since WC3 has much more playing value to me than wow does, I am praying for sc2.

I'm just bored with RTS games. Years ago, I spent retarded amounts of time playing WC, SC and C&C, but they just don't grab my attention anymore. Blizzard has done a great job with their RTS games in the past, and I'd fully expect that to continue with any future games. I just doubt that I'll be spending much time with 'em.

If my timeline is correct, is the announcement due Saturday? It seems they are going one game per day on that title page, so that would be my guess.

It'll be a Starcraft 2 RTS as a setup for the Starcraft MMO, within 1 year or 2 of the launch.

Here's some infor on the Starcraft 2 announcement:

http://pc.ign.com/articles/788/788627p1.html
Blizzard's Worldwide Invitational Begins
Updates directly from the show floor.
by Charles Onyett

May 18, 2007 - Editor's note: I'm writing this from a wireless connection on Blizzard' WWI show floor. Their opening ceremony is set to start any minute now. As the ceremony continues there'll be fragmented updates below. Expect more details throughout the presentation unless this wireless connection screws up. Also, expect typos. All timestamps are local time in Seoul, South Korea.

3:31 - Announcements are over - transitioning into a musical act - hopefully it's not as bad as the music they were playing before the ceremony.

3:26 - Showing another video of "things to come." concept art for SC2 - zerg landscapes - ruined terran structures - freen filds - SC2 looks, at least visually, strikingly similar to SC1 - both in unit and map designs. Now showing a giant rush of zerglings - probably over 100 of them, swarming with no slowdown - mroe character art - finishes with the StarCraft II logo.

3:23 - now showing terran and protoss fight - marines and zealots clashing on the ground - mothership and battle crusers in the air - framerate seems relatively stable as more units stream in - hard to tell - about 100 units on screen right now - a few of the new protoss units just came in - nuclear launch detected warning - every unit on screen destroyed - three nukes were launched at once - then zergs rush in and spell "GG" while turning into suicidal bombs.

3:18 - warprey also very effective against structures - very vulnerable to small unit fire - shws warpreys getting wiped out by terran marines. Physics system lets debris from warpreys roll down a ramp. Showing one more unit - warped in in a serious of cubes - giant floating base - called a protoss mothership - can only have 1 at a time - cost big resources - special abilities include timebomb that slows all enemy missiles inside - shows terran missle launcher shooting in projectiles that stop in the field before they reach the ship - when field ends missiles drop the ground - planet cracker attack - giant lasers stream from ship to ground - ship can be moved around while planet cracker laser is active - the ship looks like a metallic, triangular sand dollar - mothership can create a black hole anywhere it wannts to - creates distortion that actually sucks ships in and destroys them - in the demo the black hole destroyed four terran battle cruisers in about ten seconds.

3:16 - showing space platform environment, land mass floating over planets / nebulae. Showing phoenix units failing to destroy terran battle cruisers - new protoss unit - Warprey - flying unit that does increased damage the longer it hits a target with it's continuous blue laser.

3:15 - Zerglings can mutate into suicidal bomb things thar roll across the ground - very powerful explosions. Colossus using new IK system to move across differences in terraing height. Colossus extremley weak against air strike - New unit for protoss - Pheonix - can overcharge guns for multiple projectile blast - but after blast the ship is rendered inert for a short period.

3:14 - Protoss colossus - huge unit that can blast out dual lasers and use long legs to traverse differences in terrain height - in the demo two of them obliterate about fifty or so zerglings.

3:10 - Terran reapers - can hop across unever terrain with jump packs - two types of small pistols that don't activate immortals. Protoss now have the ability to create shields whereever they want. Protoss can now warp in units from manufacturing facilities anything within pylon range. New protoss unit - stalker - can teleport - quadripedal thing - can keep blinking forward - seems to be a shot cooldown on the ability. Zerg start coming in, giant worms pop out of ground unleasing zerglings. Protoss can use phase fields and teleporting abilities to create an army anywhere on the battlefield, according to Blizzard.

3:09 - controlling protoss zealots - still has psi blades and personal shield - new charge ability that let him quickly close range on enemies. Siege tanks shown - still the same type of behavior where they can lock down - take out zealots really quickly - new protoss unit - called immortals - have special shield that only activates upon being powerfully attacked - siege tanks could barely do any damage to them.

3:07 - Showing gameplay footage - Looks like protoss ships - floating over asteroid/ base structure - entering protoss ase - similar looking buildings - vespene gas still in the game - character pane shows up on right side - some protoss guy - shifts to terran bases floating on rockets over same type of territory - sill collecting crystals as resources - marines load out. Dustin is actually playing the game - nothing in the game is final.

3:05 - Morheim says everyone eager to see actual game - going to show actual gameplay - bringing up SC2 lead designer. Dustin Browder.

3:00 - FMV sequence in a spaceship - looks Terran - zooming in on a metal door - door opening - reveals a guy with a cigar in chains - prisoner - door shuts behind him - there's so much bass the room is shaking - guy steps into some kind of metallic devicce - legs are strapped in - guy rising toward ceiling - Korean text on screen got people very excited - another part of the machine is dropping metal arms on him - machine whirring - applying armor to his torso - extremly detailed visuals here - now guy is strapping on gloves - armor is molding together - seems like a Terran marine - rockets turn on - zerg now onscreen - Marine delivers a line - StarCraft 2 officially announced.

2:57 - Showing another movie, presumably of game footage.

2:56 - Video over - Morhaime about to make announcement.

sweet, 8 years later and it looks exactly like starcraft. I guess it is cool that it will play in south korean internet cafes that havent updated their hardware since 2001. and at least it sounds like they might have gotten rid of the porn music from the first game.

coming in starcraft 2: were adding a fourth unit to each race to increase the strategy. HOLY CRAP!

My initial thoughts are AWESOME!

After looking at the scrrenshots and artwork, I'm a little dissappointed. It looks like SC1 with updated graphics and little more. I saw a single new unit: a protoss tripod, ala C&C3/War of the Worlds. Even the "concept art" was just SC1. The tilesets were just revamps too. The UI looks almost identical to SC1. Same resources/buildings/gatherers, ect.

On the plus side, it shouldn't take them long at all to pump out this game because there will be little to no balancing involved. I don't exactely know what I was expecting, but more of the same is a bit of a let down.

Don't get me wrong, seeing an updated graphical pic of a zergling rush just about makes me want to reinstall the original game and capture that feeling again right now.

Answered my own question: No release date announced.

I agree with everything that's been said. I would have been more excited about it if it looked different than the original. It barely does.

I'll still buy it because it's Blizzard and I've never purchased a bad product from them, but I was kinda hoping for something more.

With all the mmo crap out lately, we'd have all probably settled for just another starcraft expansion with like 3 more campaigns and 1-2 new units per race. Certainly, not happy about it, but we'd all still buy that if it was our only option.

Sid Meyer's made his whole career on minorly tweaking the same couple games. I think if any game deserves to be refreshed, it's SC.

If they use a hero unit system like they did in WC3, we'll have SC DotA, and won't that be sweet?

I hope not. That really ruined WC3 for me. Too much reliance on a single unit is no fun for RTS IMO.

Btw, the first SC had lots of hero units that were used in special missions or to advance the story in-game.

Many in the DOTA-community is hoping for the same Hero-system such as WC3 Frozie in SC2 so they can make DOTA in Space! :D

The new World Editor coming with SC2 will prolly be the bestest

Last time the community was let down by Starcraft, Blizzard started again from scratch and we got the great game we all remember fondly.

Anyone remember this?

because for a game that probably wont be out for another 2 years, it already looks astoundingly outdated. and the gameplay looks about as complex and interesting as SC's already-outdated-when-SC-came-out, 3 units per side, rock, paper, scissors strategy.

actually strategy involves a bit more than memorizing build orders and clicking really fast.

I loved the original. This looks just like it. WC3 looked completely different than WC2, it's not even a valid comparision. This looks more like what C&C3 was: A virtual carbon copy of past gameplay with shiny new graphics. That's all well and good, but you're not going to keep my attention for long if you're not giving me something new.

Blizzard can't risk alienating all those Koreans by making a game too different from something they are already addicted to.

No, it would seem that your fondness of stupid space shit maybe blinds you a bit? (I've always had a little less respect for people who like stuff like starcraft games.. or anything star wars or star trek or any of that geeky garbage - but getting really into them is 10 times worse.) But if you look through some of the screenshots available they look like shit already, and the game is a long way off. WC3 was a noticable improvement from the earlier ones, and the graphics (particularly for a RTS game) were on par with or above other things out at the time, this is not looking to be the same.

Work harder on suppressing your inner-monologue. You seriously don't know when to keep your comments to yourself and when to speak.

I hate to break it to you, there's no difference in level of geekiness of a fantasy fan vs. a sci-fi fan to all the cool people. So if you're trying to be one of the cool people, by liking fantasy over sci-fi, you've already failed.

Keep spitting on the sci-fi fans though. We know how you like to spit.
Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.

was going to actually reply, but I guess the thread is over now that 'Funkmasterr' has ejaculated his stupid all over it's face and hair.

commence a page and a half of everyone calling him a retard and him further digging himself deeper into a shitpile until he smugly responds about how easy it is to manipulate everyone into losing their tempers.

I wouldn't want or need the respect of anyone that walks around with that kind of `logic' anyways

No no no. What?

The major differences between WC2 and WC3:
WC3 is in 3D.
Quite a few new units.
Heroes.

The major differences between SC and SC2:
SC2 is in 3D.
Quite a few new units.
Superunits (Mothership and most likely one for terran/zerg aswell)

There's as much new in stuff in SC2 as there was with WC3.
The only thing is that a 3D RTS isn't new and exciting anymore. I guess that's what did it for you in WC3.

I know perfectly well when to keep my comments to myself, I just choose not to. You don't honestly think I didn't know I was going to piss a bunch of you off, right? Anyhow, I am not a fantasy "fan", I like some of the shit, but by no means do I memorize their names and stories and dress up like them at costume parties.

Did you ever play WarCraft 2? The 2 factions were virtually identical, with only 2-3 units difference between them. WarCraft 3 was an entirely different game from the ground up, with 3 vastly different playstles for each race and the introduction of Hero units. The tuning of the 3 factions seemed more StarCraft than WarCraft 2, with the addition of stealthed units and how differently the armies worked.

StarCraft 2, has all the exact same things from the first one, as evidence in thier screenshots. Same turrents, same bunkers, same Battle Cruisers, same zerglings. I'm sure they'll add some new elements to take advantage of the 3D aspect, but so much looks to be a total rehash. WarCraft 3 was not a rehash in the slightest, no matter how loosely you define the term.

bullshit. The towers/orcs/grunts/buildings in wc3 are indentical in every way except they added animations to them. I mean, you guys are all basing these wild accusations that it's the exact same game with minimal upgrades and play changes off of a fucking press release and 5 screenshots. That seems pretty logical to me, now that you mention it.

It is a sequel to a franchise, the same characters/units/buildings/etc should be in it. I expect to see a battle cruiser and some zerglings looking identical. I'm not basing my entire opinion of the game on the one terrain that they show you in 3D, and some identical looking units. I can't even buy that you guys really think this way, in that they won't be making any playstyle changes in the next TWO YEARS that it's in production. I garauntee you that there will be incremental playstyle changes from WC3 (since each *craft seems to be an upgrade to the one prior to it). While it certainly won't be up to the par of CoH (using buildings as cover and what not) it will still push the game into a new, exciting direction, as in most anything blizzard does. I'm not sucking blizzard cock with this post, as it may look, but let me ask this: When was the last time Blizzard ever fucked us over on an rts game? Or even gave us anything less than amazing? (I take exception to Diablo 2, still fun, but didn't really add a lot more to the original)

There is absolutely nothing about WoW that could be considered amazing by anyone with their eyes open. Good game, but not even in the same category as amazing.
