From Lord British, they released a promo movie to a bunch of game sites today. Looks like a cross between AO and Planetside, but I'm not sure if there's PvP in it. Beta signups are happening now and closed beta is expected to start sometime next month.

I hate both of you. I signed up for this beta like months ago, and I got jack.

I applied March 9th according to the post above.masteen wrote:I hate both of you. I signed up for this beta like months ago, and I got jack.
Initial download is 2593mb. Almost done with that. I printed out the basic control commands so I'm ready to roll.
Tuberok: go to the Tabula Rasa forums if you haven't yet. There are a few small guides there.
Peeps that like Planetary will like this one. It's easy to pick up the controls, has enough skills/abilities to make it interesting and the targeting system (locks onto target) makes it more fun than a pain to play.
Took some early play screens if you want to see some of what it's like.

Must start out with an ugly green outfit! It's tradition!

Character Gen seems mostly for face and hair color. In this game, you keep your last name permanently and you can change your first name as you create new characters.

The game looks good (these are low quality jpegs). I have setting on high but as you can see, there are higher settings.

Abilities are laid out in trees. There are things called Logos that I haven't run into yet. I think they are special abilities.

Stuff is easy to get to from keyboard commands or popping up the radial selector that expands as you move around it for pretty much all windows/options.

Nifty way to get game feedback.

Targetting locks on if you hold down the tab. This isn't a twitch headshot game.

Effects are pretty good. The one above is right after a blew up a gun turret with the dirt on the lens kinda thing going on.

Animation, grabbing a clip for my pistol and reloading.

The abilities/skills/attribute/logos aren't overwhelming but plentiful and should keep peeps busy. The quest stuff is nice with lower right map acting in a Guild Wars sort of way (if you've played that) and upper right lists your mission objectives and progress.

This is pretty fun so far. Heading back in for some more. Can't say much from newbie missions. Need to get high enough to group and see if that part of the game is well done. Still thinking anyone that enjoyed planetary will like it.
Voice chat is simple in the game (if you like that)

I put together an image with all the attributes explained. It's not the best quality but I'm gathering from all the resistances that they'll play a key role in how good your character is. (Hoshkar Veeshan's Peak!)

The resistance levels above are about the same that Winnow had in EQ until I went to Veeshan's Peak!

Well, for a beta I must say I am impressed so far. Gameplay is fun and so far everything I have tried works. Just scratching the surface and as Winnow said, not up to the point of grouping so not sure how that will pan out. At this point though I am having a blast. And yes Kwon.. if you train up hand to hand combat... spinning kicks!

Made up a career path tree chart. This might give peeps and idea of the way they want to take their character. I had no idea but I can't progress past level 5 until I pick a class.
The final eight classes seem interesting enough. This is 1920X1200 image so you may have to zoom in to read the text.

You have a bunch of available slots for characters and you can "clone" your characters so before you advance down a particular tree. You should clone your character so you don't have to work your way back up to where you were again to go down the other path. Clone before each branch. You can change gender and look of character at the same time.
Medic seems ok...not totally a healer. looks like they can use "shaman" type plague attacks as well.
Exobiologist looks to be a pet using/enchanter type class.
Demolitionist = wizards. heavy damage but probably weak armor.
Engineer another "pet" class but robot/drones instead of biological pets.
Grenadier They look to be the EQ rangers with heavy front line damage while...
Guardians look to be the EQ Tanks with the high armor and kwon-like close quarters melee abilities
Sniper pretty straight forward.
Spy the interesting part about the Spy description is the comment about deception/misdirection. Will be cool if they can disguise themselves or hack computers to make the enemy think there are more (or less) forces about to attack.
A few more pics

Hmmm, I haven't even thought about Guild Wars since playing. It seems totally different to me.Avestan wrote:I am in and leveled to 7, but have not been impressed.
Too much like GuildWars.
I got caught up in messing with Linux again most of the weekend so am only level 5. Will play more tomorrow. I think the servers are down on Mondays and Fridays.
I'm having fun but it's way too early to tell for me to judge the game as a whole. I'll know soon enough if it's too repetitive or if the variation in the eight classes and mob encounters make for a good time after hitting the higher levels.
Yeah, longevity means something different these days than it did with EQ. (I don't count WoW!)Tuberok wrote:Still playing around with it myself. I think it has potential but really that is all guesswork as I am still just starting out. Fun for now but not sure about the longevity anymore... Then again, not sure about the longevity of any MMO anymore for me after the EQ years.
I'm curious to see how teams work together on missions. This may be one of those games that works best with voice chat as your team may be more spread out than with EQ.
