East/West

Post by Sueven »

So both the NBA and the NHL have an Eastern and a Western conference, split along somewhat logical geographical lines. MLB and the NFL do not split by East/West, they split by National/American, and geography is subdivided within these conferences.

My question is: Do you automatically connect either National or American with either East or West? I've always associated American with West and National with East. This is, however, because I'm a native Philadelphian, and Philadelphia sports are East/East/National/National. I have no idea whether this pattern holds true in other cities as well.

So: Do you have similar associations? Do you have opposite associations? Do you have no associations at all?

I live in the Detroit area, where we are East (NBA), West (NHL), National (NFL) and American (MLB).

I identify with those conferences that my teams play in, if only because I'm more used to seeing us play opponents in those same conferences.

I have never because I never associated the Giants with the East of Yankees with the West. Both coasts have a decent amount of both NL and AL teams.

Example:
California have the Giants, Padres, Dodgers in the NL while As and Angels are AL.

For whatever reason I'm an East/American kind of guy. My teams are Browns/Indians (or A's, I really don't care much about baseball) and Carolina Hurricanes/Heat (don't really care about either sport also, but like each respective teams for reasons other than they are the reigning champs).

He's just saying that because he walked in on me and his girlfriend in that compromising position.

He is still heartbroken.

American = East due to the Yankees/Red Sox for me.

I don't follow baseball at all, but I think of the AL as more the eastern league because it seems the Red Sox or the Yankees (and once upon a time the Blue Jays) are always representing them.

I just wish the NHL had the old conference and division names. Patrick, Norris, Smythe, Adams divisions and the Campbell and Prince of Wales Conferences sounded better. It reflected the history of the game and the league more than the geographical ones by paying homage to instrumental people in the game. Mind you they would have had to add two more divisional names now... Richard and Howe or Beliveau? Or the Cherry and Meeker divisions?:p
