When people say it's all about the price...

Post by Animalor »

I just called the EBGames near my office to find out how much they chanrged for used PSP.

Apparently they're real hard to get right now. They sell em for 149 cdn used and they leave almost as soon as they're put on the shelf at that pricepoint.

At 199$cdn, I wouldn't buy it new but at 149, I would seriously consider getting one of those for the media capabilities given that 4gb flash cards are pretty cheap atm

I don't really want to pay 400-500$ for a Zune or a video iPod but it would be great to have a media device with a nice big screen and 2-4gb of data capabilities while on the go.

Isn't the battery life not so hot?

Depends. If you're playing a game or something at full screen brightness and sound a decent level you'll get about 4 hours before kaput. If you just use it for MP3 playback though, which lets you turn off the screen, you can get about 10 hours.

Myself I'd spend the extra on a new one. I don't trust used electronics very much!

However if you really want a used one.. Tigerdirect.com is selling refurbished PSPs for $130. Which is about $145 Canadian. Only a 2 month warranty and not sure if they ship to Canada. Probably!

No idea. I never really looked into a PSP cause the price was too high.

I would think that if it doesn't need to spin a UMD that the battery life would be improved somewhat.

I've been looking around and it looks like the average is 5-8 hours, which isn't great but is still better than a portable DVD player.

Battery life really depends on what you're doing with the device. Even not spinning a UMD the battery will drain fast if you're using the WiFi for game playing. Just a guesstimate but I'd say with movies you'd get 5 hours and MP3 about 10 (with screen off most the time).

http://psp.ign.com/articles/574/574557p1.html for 5 tests and was the battery life time was.

Can always pickup a backup battery for $15 and carry that around for when the other gets low.

Zune's only have one price at the moment, $249. Which is about 280 in canada, so I'm not sure where you got the 400-500 figure.

Not available in Canada yet either. Online retailers have also been asked by MS not wo sell to Canadians either.

About the pice I guess I was misinformed. I was under the impression it was more expensive than that.

I got to play with one a couple month back at the Vista launch event I attended (One of the TechNet staffers that was there had one) and I thought it was a very cool little machine.

Blows PSP out of the water in every way possble, except gaming of course.

I don't game on the fly, but it looks like you're more focused on the mp3/movie playback than the gaming.

I have an extra long battery in mine, lasting about 30 hours for music only, and about 18 hours if watching video. I have 400 albums on mine, and seasons 1 and 2 of Home Movies (under rated show), and also 300ish pics. I have room to spare.

For what it's worth, I almost bought a PSP several times in the past using your same logic, and I'm glad I passed.

EDIT: I also just added a input to my car stereo, allowing me to use my zen through my existing system. That level of storage comes in real handy!

Cool recommendations. Thanks =) Not sure how soon I'll be in the market for one of these but having options is always a good thing.

I bought a PSP shortly after it came out. I never play it anymore. It's a nice system... but the DS had more for me :)

Having both DS and PSP I don't really use either one a whole lot these days. However when I do pick up one it's usually the PSP. DS games just don't seem to have much of an attraction for me.

If someone only wanted multimedia capabilties and didn't care about games I wouldn't recommned the PSP (or a DS). Obviously a device designed for a specific task, rather than many such as the PSP is, it will perform those tasks better and would be the better choice.

What Asl said. The controls of the PSP are more comfortable to me than the DS. Granted it's fun poking a screen with a plastic pencil sometimes, but generally the PSP is nicer to play on.
