Gothic 3 or Neverwinter Nights 2?

Post by Kryshade »

I need a new PC game to play... I'm bored with all the others I have. Lately I've played Guild Wars, Battlefield 2, Freespace 2, Armada Online (Alpha), Counterstrike:Source.

I'm tired of the whole FPS and RTS genre. (Never really been big on RTS which sucks, it's a huge genre and I just don't get into it very much).

I prefer role-playing games for the most part, however I wouldn't be opposed to something else if it was good enough. Stopped by EB games today and was checking out some of the PC games. Saw Gothic 3 and NWN 2 and thought about picking one of them up. I know a lot of people here may have played both, and wanted thoughts on which is more entertaining. Or to dig up some other game suggestions. I've checked out reviews/videos for C&C: Tiberium Wars, Company of Heros etc, but again, I'm not a real big RTS fan... I like them for a couple days and then I just get tired of them.

Anyone got an suggestions for a real good PC game that isn't FPS or RTS?

From what I've heard, neither :( I haven't checked on NWN2 lately, maybe they fixed the host of performance issues that plagued it at release. The review for Gothic 3 I read made it sound like a fine world, but the actual gameplay/combat was lacking.

I've got Oblivion for the 360. :)

I was looking at Warhammer 40k: Dark Crusade. It's RTS but it looks kinda fun.

I'd like to play LOTRO, but I have a problem with the monthly fee's for MMOG's. It's not that I can't afford it, it's more that I feel obligated to play, and OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of games are hard to just "pause" or walk away from if my wife needs something or wants to talk to me.

I was thinking about maybe picking up Dreamfall: The Longest Journey too, anyone played that?

Thanks for the tips so far, kinda nice to find out what other people here play. I've taken a lot of tips from the books forum for reading and have yet to be dissappointed by someones recommendation!

Dreamfall was good, still prefer the first one (and if you havent played The Longest Journey, go play that first), and it kinda got a cliffhanger ending waiting for the next game (IF that get made), which spoil it a little :(

NWN runs like shit on my PC, I blame Vista.

The sound is terrible too, since DX10 doesn't support hardware sound acceleration and Creative has yet to release ALchemy for the Audigy 2.

Gothic 3 was rushed out. They maybe able to fix it with a HUGE patch, but the last time I checked, 1-2 months ago, it was shit. The combat system is broke, so basically all you have to do is spam FAST stab attack over and over, it hits the mobs causing them to reel back for a second and preventing them from attacking you... just in time for you to be able to land another quick stab attack. Basically, you can kill anything one on one in Gothic 3 and never get hit.

That needs to be fixed. The gameworld is awesome if you have top of the line in computer graphics. If there was a patch resolving those issues it maybe the first pick, otherwise NWN2 is the one you want.

NWN2, is starting to get some mods out the door to enhance the game as well. The original story though, lacks... the first few chapters/acts are great, then you get this feel that the final parts of the game were rushed out the door due to publishing constraints... guess what? they were rushed out.

If you can deal with the end being less fun than the first part, and will do well with community mods, then NWN2 hands down, otherwise Gothic 3.
I probably gave you virtual items once upon a time...

Don't blame Vista. That game ran like shit for me while I still had XP.

Stalker is an FPS, but has some RPG components, like Deus Ex if you were into that one...I know you said no FPS and RTS...but honestly, there's not much else out right now :(

Well, speaking of suggesting RTS games when he dosen't really want to play them...

I just bought the Battle for Middle Earth Anthology (Battle of Middle Earth, Battle of Middle Earth 2 SE, and The Witch King Expansion) for a mere 35$. It's a great buy for the price. I'm playing the first one right now, and it's not a traditional RTS at the point I'm at, but quite compelling. In short, if you liked the movies, you'll love the game. It incorporates all the character voices, sound effects, and music from the films. It's very well done and fun to play through IMO.

God, you're a fucking idiot.

They actually waited several months before they released the game in North America. The North American release included several large patches that were issued post EU release.

The problem is that Piranha Bytes has fucking horrible QA.
Gothic was a buggy, unplayable piece of shit at release.
It took about 12 months of patches before Gothic 2 was playable.
Gothic 3 is almost playable now, in that there are not many major gamebreaking bugs left. It still has poor performance and painfully long load times.
Basically, you can kill anything one on one in Gothic 3 and never get hit.
Did you even play the game past the newbie levels?

Thanks for the responses. Well, despite my saying I didn't want a RTS game, I picked up Warhammer 40k, Dawn Of War: Dark Crusade. It's pretty much a stand alone expansion, and was only $29.

I have to say that so far I'm enjoying it. It's got a really cool single player mode that is basically like the boardgame Risk. When you go to attack another player (can only move one country or attack once per turn) you actually play the battle out. It adds a cool strategy part to the basic RTS gameplay. I haven't played it very much so far, but I am enjoying it. Of course, the test of time will tell. if I'm still playing it 2-3 weeks from now than maybe I can start to say that I enjoy the RTS genre. I have this horrible inability to play most video games all the way through. I have OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of fun with them until like 3/4 of the way through and then BAM, I never touch them again. Dunno why that is.

Space Rangers 2... I remember briefly reading something about that. Isn't that supposed to be like the modern day Star Control? Is it out in the US? (I'm at work so can't check to see atm).

Dunno, never played Star Control.
It's available in North America, I got it a few months ago for like $25 here in Toronto.

It's a psuedo turn based space exploration/trading/combat type thing... but missions run the gamut from RTS minigames to text adventure/puzzles to asteroids-like arcade shooters.
My favorite minigame was a text based puzzle game where I had to manage a ski resort.
