From what I read last year when the cancellation was announced, the writing for season 2 had been completed, but filming had not yet started. Once the cancellation became official, they reworked things to try to tidy up the ending. This was based on various bits & pieces gathered from fan & spoiler sites, as there was precious little official information available.

Fuck HBO for treating their fans like shit - First they cancel Deadwood after three seasons because the creator wanted to do a surf noir series.
Do a little cost benefit analysis before you start filming a series like Rome. Surely someone in the numbers department could have the foresight enough to tell them how costly it was going to be to produce the show.
The only positive thing I can say is that HBO doesn't jump the shark...

Actually, they cancelled Deadwood because they fucked up the overseas deal to where they actually lost money by showing it in Europe. Since they couldn't redo the deal and already lost a lot of money (supposedly), they had to pull the plug. It definately wasn't due to ratings or critical praise.
They did however give The Wire a final season so I am really happy about that at least.

Rome will be an all time classic series for me. The ending (last two episodes) weren't the best of the lot but I think that's because of having to rework things. Still, they had plenty of great acting.
I'm not sure about Cleopatra either. It was a bummer to see Mark Antony go out that way.
While the older Octavian did a fine job, the younger Octavian was a much more memorable character.
Seeing Pullo strangle the slave that killed his wife was perfect.
Remember the episodes leading up to the final two when you look back on season two.
HBO screwed things up on longevity but man are Deadwood and Rome classics.
