I'm hoping to get in touch with someone living in Dehra Dun, India.

This weekend I had lunch with my grandparents and heard a new story they never mentioned before. My grandfather, was captured as a civilian POW during WWII, while en route from Australia to Italy.

During his imprisonment at a POW camp in Dehra Dun, India he was shot and killed. Why? Story was he was shot sneaking from the Missionary camp back to the Italian camp late at night. He was a carpenter and fashioned guitars, violins and cellos, etc and was delivering one to another prisoner.

Well, he was buried in the Dehra Dun Cemetary all those years ago. Apparently those missionaries thought so much of hi, they bought a tombstone for him and everything.

Nothing in the world would make my grandmother happier than to have a picture of that tombstone. I'd love to give that to her.

I scoured the internet, paid for access to information record sites...nothing. I was hoping someone knows someone or know a site with a forum or an email address or any suggestions?

The only thing I can think of would be to contact the nearest US embassy there and see what they could tell you.

Arb's idea is good if you know the cemetary and that there's a headstone for sure. A little extra $$ might get a flower delivery person to take picture.

Actually, wop is a derivative of the Italian word guappo, loosely meaning "thug", but referring to an organized crime syndicate called Guapperia o Camorra, from the Napoli (in inglese: Naples) region in Italy.

I never found the reason to be offended by such words. They don't pertain to me. They might have been relevant to my grandfather who came to America in 1955 with my grandmother and my mom who was 3 years odl at the time. I'm not sure if they called him names. I don't think he would have cared much either. He just worked his balls off every day and made a life for himself, until he fell 8 stories on a job site back in 1975. Tough SOB. He's still around. He has a 5th grade education and is as liberal as the day is long, but he is my hero. Wop or not

I am also a wop. My grandpa is also the typical hard working Italian (Sicilian, actually). He just turned 90 this past December and he still mows the lawn, has a very large garden and a greenhouse (which he uses to get veggies for the fam, and for his other wop friends that own Italian restaurants around the area) and works on his car when there is something wrong with it, he is the IRL energizer bunny.

Very cool man. My Grandmother is even more of a hard worker. I can only hope to be a tenth of the example the immigrants from that generation were to us.
