WAR St. Pierre!
Grats to Georges, now the greatest UFC Welterweight champion yet! And probably the greatest UFC champion overall (with the possible exception of The Natural.) Man, what a dominant performance. Wow.

Ok Quarkk...You are obviously a HUGE fan of GSP...but the greatest champion in UFC history overall??? Step back and take an unbiased look before making that statement.
No doubt that GSP is impressive and looks so much better than he did the first go around with Matt Hughes. GSP was hungry for this...and I knew he was going to take it from Hughes - but I do have a soft spot for Hughes...he's been a great champion...but he didn't seem very hungry lately.
Kry - Here is the breakdown on the fight -
ROUND ONE:
The two circle each other to open up the fight. St. Pierre works some kicks into the mix, but neither man takes an advantage in the first minute.
St. Pierre shakes Hughes up a bit with a spinning kick, but Hughes isn't in danger just yet. St. Pierre is benefitting a bit from his range; the action is halted when Hughes takes a kick to the groin area.
The same thing happens immediately after the action is restarted.
Hughes recovers and the fight starts up again. St. Pierre answers with an attempted higher kick, and soon rocks Hughes with a shot to the face. Hughes regains composure quickly, though, and he remains out of danger.
Hughes goes for a bodykick; St. Pierre catches the kick and grounds Hughes with a punch to the face. He works from Hughes' guard.
Hughes gets back to his feet, but on the way up, he eats a knee to the face. Hughes shoots in for a takedown, but GSP manages to stay on his feet. The round ends as St. Pierre rocks Hughes with a Superman punch and some follow-ups. Hughes TRULY was saved by the bell.
ROUND TWO:
St. Pierre fires with a kick to the very bottom of Hughes' leg, forcing Hughes to his back in a "trip" like fashion. Hughes gets back up, but he's eating so many hard punches and kicks from St. Pierre. The challenger knocks Hughes down with a high kick to the face; he follows up with some ground and pound to get the stoppage. We've got a new Welterweight Champion, and the victory came in dominant fashion.
RESULT: Georges St. Pierre defeated Matt Hughes via TKO at 1:25 of Round Two to become the new UFC Welterweight Champion.
I wish Monson would have pounded the crap out of Tim Sylvia. I also thought Brandon Vera was great...that fight was over before it even started....Frank Miir needs to retire.

Moon, I am a big fan of GSP. But it's moreso that I am not a fan of UFC
I'm a Pride guy. So, it was really nice to see a UFC guy I actually like and respect win the title, taking another belt away from the UFC's redneck connection (Sylvia, Hughes, Liddell, Franklin). Anyway, who do ya think's better than GSP in the UFC history? I'm genuinely curious, not trolling

Better then ST Pierre in UFC History = Anyone with 1 title defense at this point. He will need to hold that belt till 2009 to match what Hughes has done, St Pierre is a great fighter, don't get me wrong, but he is nowhere close. Hughes is easily the greatest champ ever followed closely by Liddel.
Side note, Vera is going to eat up Silvia, then hammer Chuck (non title match), He is the real deal.

Oh, I think we may have gotten mixed up with the wonderful world of English. You guys are taking "champion" to mean something along the lines of someone who has shown their supremacy over a long period of time. I simply meant he is the most skilled fighter in UFC history to attain a title! I wasn't talking about his legacy.Pherr the Dorf wrote:Better then ST Pierre in UFC History = Anyone with 1 title defense at this point. About Vera - I completely agree. I hate Sylvia as much as anyone else, but I am worried about his reach, but hopefully Vera's speed negates it. I'd love to see him eat their faces.

Hughes held his title for so long fighting against NOBODY'S. First time he even met someone worth a damn, and he lost dramatically (BJ Penn 1).
You can't judge a person by how long he holds a "title". There is so much more to it. Quality of opponents plays a huge part of it, and of the 46 fights he has had professionally, he has fought opnly THREE worthy opponents, 2 of which he LOST to (BJ Penn and GSP. Losing one and winning one over each). I'm actually including Royce Gracie in this list of three good opponents he has faced, even though his style is out-dated and no longer effective in MMA. Jiu Jitsu is just too easily defended if you have even minor training in it.

While I do agree with your point that saying Hughes is the "greatest champion of all time" simply based on his long list of title defenses is silly, I strongly disagree when you say Hughes has fought only nobodies (barring Gracie, BJ, and GSP). I'm only bringing this up because I feel that it's disrespectful to call the following fighters nobodies or unworthy of fighting Hughes.Menelaos wrote:Hughes held his title for so long fighting against NOBODY'S
he has fought opnly THREE worthy opponent
Jose Landi-Jons aka "Pele", Anderson Silva's mentor and former Chute Boxe fighter. Gave Chuck Liddell all he could handle while also giving up 15ish lbs and lost a close decision. He KO'd Hughes. Pele is a very accomplished fighter. Admittedly past his prime.
Carlos Newton x2 - He's no BJ but he's certainly not a nobody. At the time they fought he was well respected and considred a grappling magician.
Hayato Sakurai - DEFINITELY not a nobody and certainly a worthy opponent. Sakurai is the most well rounded fighter (barring GSP) from 155-185 and is a savvy veteran with exceptional skills. Look for him to crush some fighters in the PRIDE LW Grand Prix this April. "Mach" was actually KO'd by Hughes with some GnP - a very big win for Hughes.
Sean Sherk - Now a top ten in the LW division. While not the most exciting fighter, he's a powerhouse of a wrestler and has very underrated striking skills. He has only TWO losses (GSP/Hughes) and big wins over guys like Diaz (who just subbed Gomi with a Gogoplata...) and Karo Parisyan...!
Frank Trigg - Certainly not the most exciting fighter, but the man is well known and well accomplished. He's the ICON MW champ after moving up from 170, and has HUGE wins over "Mayhem" Miller and Misaki (top 5 MW in the world...).
