QuakeCon 2007 - Dallas

Post by Lalanae »

Registration for QuakeCon 2007 in Dallas (Aug 2-5) is open. It's free and a lot of fun if you know peeps there.

Eric and I go every year and it's a blast. We primarily go for the partying at night :)

PM me if you are going and we'll meet up.

QuakeCon is the current convention being produced by The QuakeCon Organization. First and foremost, QuakeCon is a huge LAN party dedicated to fans of id Software's games (i.e., Quake, Quake 2, and Quake III Arena, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Enemy Territory, and the DOOM series). We also hold workshops and roundtables where id Software employees discuss their games, technology, and their thoughts about the gaming industry. Other people and companies from the gaming community also participate in the workshops and roundtables while displaying their upcoming games and hardware. QuakeCon also hosts tournaments, large and small. Basically, it's an enormous LAN party with a lot of other stuff to do in-between deathmatching with people from all over the world! Read more about the purpose and history of The QuakeCon Organization in our About section.

This one needs a caption contest.. or perhaps the one from the same page labeled "Entertainment" where some bloke is blowing bubbles...

I went to QuakeCon last year (for the first time) and wasn't super-impressed.

Although I'm very curious about it this year since they nerfed E3, there aren't very many public expos like this left. Leipzig is all I've heard anyone talk about this year. =/

Is it going to be at the Hilton Anatole again this year?

Yes, same place.

Like EQ Fan Faires, no one I know goes for the actual convention stuff, although the BYOC is pretty cool to experience. It's all about the parties and people.

Eric is one of the small original QuakeCon members (the first one in 96 was only 30 people), so the folks we hang out with are old schoolers, including the 2 guys credited for organizing the first one. I have a fucking blast every time I go. Much drinking and hilarity.

It would be boring if you don't experience the group aspect. I'll take a couple swings through the BYOC to see what kind of crazy shit people have set up, and through the booths for any free stuff, but that's about it during the day. I've talked to some of the folks who help organize it last year and they have lots of ideas to make it better, but I guess implementing them is easier said than done (everything is volunteer-based).

Every year attendence has increased (except for last year because they had venue issues and didn't announce dates until very late) despite the convention stuff being ho-hum. This Wiki for QuakeCon breaks down the numbers from each year.
