how is everyone putting Ocarina of Time and FFVI over Chrono Trigger?
CT had better graphics, an amazing sound track, a great story and side games, it was well written and it just plain kicked ass.
Ocarina of time sucked fucking water temple was too hard and the shadow temple was gay too

I'm guessing that a lot more people played Ocarina of Time than did Chrono Trigger.Neziroth wrote:how is everyone putting Ocarina of Time and FFVI over Chrono Trigger?
I'll leave nominations up through tomorrow and put the poll up on Wednesday.

My friends and I were on the last boss in Chrono Trigger, when in walked my roomate with a brand spanking new Playstation. He picked one up the day of release, along with 3-4 games.
We all took turns on the final boss in Chrono Trigger, until we eventually beat him. Only then did we hook up and play the Playstation. The next best thing in video gaming technology sat in it's box for over an hour after it was brought into an apartment full of video gaming fanatics the day it was released upon the world.
Yes, Chrono Trigger was that good.
Of course, after the boss was dead, we played the Playstation for a good 24 hours lol.

I'd probably give it to X-Com but it has already been nominated. I just remember countless hours playing again and again on harder and harder difficulty levels (a first for me after beating a game). I also went gaga over master of magic (especially after a 1.6 meg 7 hour download patch I remember leaving on overnight to get) and the original sim city. However, I think I'd give the nod to doom 2. The new enemies compared to doom 1 were just phenominal. I just remember being so zoned in on that game for a long long time. It was also the game that forced me to bump my system for 4 to 8 megs (back when memory was stupid expensive).
For the arcades, I played the twilight zone pinball machine for ridiculous amounts of time and would probably get my nod.

I think two different things are going on in the poll responses:Use whatever criteria you like to make your suggestion, from the game with the most longevity or replayability, to an old game that you enjoyed more than any other at the time but you can't get into right now due to its antiquated graphics or whatever.
1. Which game got you into gaming (hard to poll because of the age differences and various times everyone started playing but the first game is always going to be memorable for the most part)
2. Which game did you play the most/have the most fun with
Greatest Game Evah
I played the shit out of Ultima 3 and it got me hooked on non arcadish type games but the total hours played would total less than 1% of time played in EQ. Comparing an MMORPG to a non Online game is difficult though.
I kinda see games break down into genres...RTS, RPG, Sims, Arcade/FPS
X-Com was better than Ultima 3 for example but while X-Com was better, there were also more games to play when X-Com came out than when Ultima 3 was released so that plays a factor in longevity.
I'd hate to see some games short changed.
There's another factor mixed in as the newer the game, the more competition it has with other games for playing time unlike older games. There also seems to be a lower attention span these days or "seen it before" attitude even though all aspects of the game may be improved.
There is definitely the factor that plays into things where everything seems like it was better than it was when you look back on it 10 years later. EQ for example. Over time some of the frustrating things are forgotten and we remember mostly the good.
Pong vs Gears of War
Played Pong longer because it was the only thing out and possibly enjoyed it more because of that even though I think GoW is the better game. I'd have to vote Pong as the best game ever as it was back then while GoW, arguably considered the best game out atm, will have a much shorter reign at the top.
I think it's hard to make a best ever poll with the various categories in play. MMORPG is a different beast altogether from console games and pre-online games on the PC.
I'm curious how this turns out. I think that no matter how good a game is these days, the only games with longevity are the rare MMORPG that holds your attention like WoW for some, and EQ for a lot on this board in particular. A vote by decade might avoid some of the generational issues to make the eventual winning games more defined for their period. 80's, 90's and 00's.
Unless I misunderstand the poll and you're going to keep narrowing the choices until we have to pick between two games, won't everyone just vote for what they just nominated save for the few that threw up another game because their choice was already there so that game won't receive a vote from them anyway.

Pirates!
By Sid Mier on the Commodore 64
After that, it was released as Pirates! Gold for the IBM PC Compatible.
Then recently, released by Firaxis called, "Sid Mier's Pirates!"
The only thing I dislike about the latest version is the arcade type dancing and sneaking about town, the original games took those parts and were just a go/no-go situation based on variables... now its kinda cheesey but all other parts of the game are good to go.

Going to say... The original: Castle Wolfenstein. I'm not talking Wolf 3D. I'm talking the original.
War Marshall for 4tw!
Other than that, I agree with: EQ, X-Com (hell I downloaded and played this a few months ago), and Warcraft 2.
Back in the day Wing Commander and X-wing were pretty damn sweet.

You know what? I was just compiling the list and I changed my mind, invalidating all of the responses so far. Thanks for playing though!
We're starting over, only this time I'm going to make separate threads for nominations of different classifications of games. Then we'll vote for the champions of each classification, and at the end the winners of each type will battle it out for supremacy. Let me know if you feel like I've missed a category. If your pick came out for different platforms, put it in whichever you liked it best on, or in both.
Sorry if I wasted your time. It is a woman's prerogative to change her mind though! Wait a minute...

Well I hate all the stickies and their arbitrariness and I am disappointed that Sylvus didn't stick to his original question. I also think it's a travesty that Civ would be part of the "Other" category.

I am sticking to my original question. We're still going to do best game ever, I just realized that it would probably be more valid if we did brackets and then put champions up against each other. Otherwise the list would have 50 choices that each got 1 or 2 votes, and the winner would have like 5 votes.

There was a bug in X-Com that meant no matter what difficulty you set it to, as soon as you saved the game it reset to "Easy" and stayed that way. . .Chidoro wrote:I'd probably give it to X-Com but it has already been nominated. That's from 2 guys who worked on it.
As the stereotypical as it may be for an old EQ burnout to say this (on an EQ board mind you..) EverQuest was indeed the game that i have the most pleasant (and sometimes brutal, perhaps) memories associated with. No other game has ever made me feel that immersed and involved in a 3D world. However, those cheap porn games can get me pretty..."immersed" sometimes....
Runner up has to be Halo/Halo 2 both for storyline and online re-playability.
Zelda: Ocarina of Time is up there as well. My best memories of ye old N64 are the times when i played Zelda from the time i got home from school to the time my had finished pleading with me for an hour to go to bed.

13 years later.. I wonder if anyone has changed their opinion based on games that have come out since then.
