I just got back from being there in person. The atmosphere of the event was electric; I haven't ever had that much fun being part of a crowd. You could almost sense the people's hope that he is the real deal.
It was my fourth time seeing him speak in public, and I was once again not disappointed.
Kyo-My friends and I coined a term for our trip this morning "Can you smell what Barack is cooking?" Your comment reminded me of it.

I predict a Hillary/Obama ticket (I think I already did way back on the McCain thread) which is unfortunate. Obama I would consider but there is no way I'd cast a vote for Hillary.
At this point, I'd almost rather have Gore running on the democrat side of things than anyone.
Barack Obama is the best thing to come along for the democrats in quite some time.

Gore/Obama is the best chance for the Democrats. If that goes well, Obama in 2012 or 2016 if Gore goes two terms. Gore says he's not running atm so this is a log shot. The trouble with the long term outlook is that I don't foresee any kind of "Pax America" coming soon so termoil in the world will make it hard for any political party to put together a string of presidents together. His top policy adviser from his 2000 presidential campaign and other key supporters met Thursday in Boston to mull a potential Gore campaign (Feb 8th)

And that in a nutshell is whats wrong with the way most people choose to vote. Sucks...Al wrote:I like him a lot more than most candidates, but that may be because he is a Bears fan. I hope he turns out to be the real deal, and not some throw away candidate like the rest of them from the past decade and a half.

I think Barack can win. I love this guy. He is the best candidate I have seen since I understood the system.
His website is also pimp. http://www.barackobama.com
I hope this guy wins. I would love to have him as president.

The guy can throw a political hardball for sure.
John Howard, who heads the Bush Administration's office in Australia (they call him a PM there I think), stated that Obama's plan for phased withdrawal of US forces would encourage terrorists to hold on etc.
Obama replied today:
"If [Howard]'s ginned up to fight the good fight in Iraq I would suggest that he calls up another 20,000 Australians and send them to Iraq," he said. "Otherwise it's just a bunch of empty rhetoric."
Yeowch...

He's a politician, and is therefore telling the NOT truth when he says troops will be gone immediately. However, he also appears to be a bright dude and would work to fix shit and then remove troops.kyoukan wrote:If he thinks that Iraq needs a troop reduction before America fixes the fuck ups they caused, maybe he won't be such a great leader.
Of course, he could be a closet totalitarian.

I got a letter from Obama's campaign yesterday asking if I wanted to donate. I don't really want to donate.
Do they mail those to everyone in the United States? I'm not registered for any party, I've never signed up asking for information, etc. I'm wondering why I got one.

In all honesty, I don't think that enough people in this country are ready for a black president. ( I for one have nothing against it.) I think that we may be borderline on the female president, but there is about a snowballs chance in hell that Hilary would be able to win regardless of who she ran against.
Regardless of my opinion, will be interesting to see how it all turns out.

Nope. Say hello to President McCain or Republican X.
I'm writing this from a campaign manager's perspective here, not from a fantasy land perspective.
The democrats are pretty fucked this round anyway with the hated Hillary (dems may forgive her antics but a huge percentage of conservatives won't vote for Hillary no matter what which will screw her. Hillary has the highest percent of Americans that would "definately not" vote for her. Combine that with the still large percentage of racists in the country that won't vote for Obama even as a VP to Hillary and you have yourself another Republican president. Hell, Cheney could get elected over those two.
Gore almost beat Bush in 2000 (no, "he did beat Bush" comments please). Stick with him and place Barack in the VP slot. You democrats are going to screw the pooch yet again with this Hillary crap.
You can't fuck around with questionable candidates when the Republicans have fear mongering and the holy rollers on their side.
Also, as bad as Bush has fucked up in the Middle East, I'm not placing some young dreamer in the top seat. We still need to kick ass around the globe for at least a decade while working on alternative energy solutions. I really don't want to vote republican this round. Democrats need to get serious, nominate an electable candidate with an established support team including world affairs and military veterans.
Here are your choices:
Hillary/Obama or Obama/Hillary = McCain (or other republican in the White House)
Gore (if he runs)/anyone else as VP = democrat in White House.
It's not who you like, it's more about who you dislike the most and then working on getting the most electable opponent to that person given the circumstances.

I'm not blinded by Obama charm but am more than willing to listen to a young politician's ideas for change. She is perhaps one of the most polarizing figures in American politics and polls show that a large umber of voters say they are unlikely to vote for her if she is the nominee of the Democratic Party.
The Democrats do have a generic advantage going into the 2008 race (32 percent favor a Republican candidate while 41 percent support the Democrats), according a GOP polling firm, Public Opinion Strategies.
But a POS poll last month found that a 53 percent majority said they would not be likely to support Hillary Clinton and 43 percent said they “strongly felt that way.” Anti-Hillary sentiment was especially strong among independents — 65 percent of them would not be likely to vote for her.
A Washington Post voter poll this week found that more than 44 had an unfavorable view of her, and nearly one-third of them said they “strongly” felt that way.
The latest evidence of the erosion in her support came last week in a Gallup Poll which showed Mrs. Clinton leading nearly a dozen other rivals for the nomination with 29 percent. But that was down from 33 percent that the polling organization reported inn mid-December.
“It’s clear that two-thirds of the Democratic Party primary voters are looking for a different option,” said Republican pollster Glen Bolger.

This may have worked for the republicans the last two elections, but I have a feeling that US citizens are tired of that tactic. When is the last time you 'heard' about the threat level of the homeland security thing going up? People don't care anymore. Republicans have cried wolf too many times. Whether the south is ready to elect a black president or not, it's going to be entertaining watching him point out the absurdity of the republican b.s. machine in a way that people will listen to.Winnow wrote:You can't fuck around with questionable candidates when the Republicans have fear mongering and the holy rollers on their side.

If every time Obama is mentioned on the news, it's accompanied by the word black... I don't think he can win.
Why do we do that?.... Leading up to and at the super bowl, they must have mentioned a hundred times that it's the first time 2 black coaches are playing against each other. They did stories on them and painted them to be likeable guys, but continue to throw the black word in everywhere.
Do we say white all the time?... Fuck no... Do we celebrate white history month? Fuck no... Fucking Quit it... Forget about color.

I don't understand. If he had won the election, wouldn't he have been President? I seem to recall everyone, myself included, complaining about the idiocy of President Bush. I cannot for the life of me find any information on the internet refuting my recollection. Hmm, maybe you are from the future. Future Siji, could you please tell me next weeks lottery numbers? And will the Bears be any good next year? I sure hope so...Siji wrote:Not a comment, just a fact. He did beat him.

If they manage to keep Hillary away from him, he stands a chance. Pair him up with a moderate Southern democrat and his campaign could really go.
But if like so many things Democrat, he ends up being paired with Hillary in some sort of super-liberal Frankenstein monstrosity, he stands about as much chance as Ralph Nader.
I'd vote for him with the right VP.

"There is at least as much need to curb the cruel greed and arrogance of part of the world of capital, to curb the cruel greed and violence of part of the world of labor, as to check a cruel and unhealthy militarism in international relationships." -Theodore Roosevelt
A quote from Pope John Paul II:Siji wrote:One thing I've learned is that explaining anything to you is like explaining evolution to the Pope.Al wrote:I don't understand. And a quote from Pope Benedict XVI:"In his encyclical Humani Generis (1950), my predecessor Pius XII has already affirmed that there is no conflict between evolution and the doctrine of the faith regarding man and his vocation, provided that we do not lose sight of certain fixed points....Today, more than a half-century after the appearance of that encyclical, some new findings lead us toward the recognition of evolution as more than an hypothesis. In fact it is remarkable that this theory has had progressively greater influence on the spirit of researchers, following a series of discoveries in different scholarly disciplines. The convergence in the results of these independent studies -- which was neither planned nor sought -- constitutes in itself a significant argument in favor of the theory."
It would appear that at least 2 Popes, including the current one, understand and agree that evolution is taking place. Maybe you meant to say, "... is like explaining color to Helen Keller." That would have at least made sense."...it is important to note that, according to the Catholic understanding of divine causality, true contingency in the created order is not incompatible with a purposeful divine providence. Divine causality and created causality radically differ in kind and not only in degree. Thus, even the outcome of a truly contingent natural process can nonetheless fall within God’s providential plan for creation."
