Because the first cigarette poll was a terrible waste of everybody's time.

Thank you for correcting this horrible injustice. While I now only suspect you're an idiot (see Jice's recent post on the PS3 thread for more information on the origins of my suspicions), I can't be sure.

Need an option for "I *do* smoke one when I drink too much, only if someone offers it, but I don't buy my own and I don't inhale."

This poll still stinks!

I'm voting for the Sirensa option.

I respectfully abstain from voting in this poll because I am upset over the unlawful invasion of the poll by Sirensa impersonators. Until further notice I will be on hunger strike.

Smoked for 20 years.
Gave up 2 years ago. And gained about 70lbs.

Just say no.

What is it that makes you gain the weight, do you think? I've heard that smoking speeds up your metabolism, I've also heard that it curbs your appetite and that people replace food for cigs in the oral fixation.

I'm not concerned in the slightest about it making me eat more, I can control that. But if it slows your metabolism down and makes you gain weight for no reason, that's bullshit! I'm going to keep on smoking.

I'm at like 104 hours so far and I think I'm getting over the hump. Not so bad today as it was yesterday. The real test is going to be happy hour this evening, but I'm not smoking.

I have zero medical evidence of this ... but... I think it's both.

I smoked for 10 years, and quit over ayear ago. Immediately gained 30 lbs or so. I've found that i've had to work out a lot more, and watch what i'm eating a lot more than when I smoked in order to lose it again.

It does suck, and it's an easy excuse to say "fuck it... I'd rather smoke" - but it's worth it. 18 months later, and i'm back to where i was weight wise and a million time healthier as I have gotten excercise into my routine.

Still miss smoking like crazy, but i do not miss everything else that goes with it (coughing, smelling, cost, having to plan etc...).

Good luck Syv and keep it up.

Next 3 months are going to be a bitch, but you can do it.

Well, it's a stimulant, so it is going to speed up your metabolism a bit.

I had also heard the bit about nicotine curbing appetite, dunno if it holds any weight tho.

From the minor bit of knowledge I've picked up in all of my 21 years:

Cigarettes increase heartrate which will probably burn more calories. (does that count as increased metabolism?)

Cigarettes kill your sense of smell and ultimately taste. You can't smell delicious food, you don't get as hungry. Food (junk food especially) won't taste as good, so you don't want it as much or you want less at a time.

Also, after you quit I assume that eating food or snacking on things is a nervous habbit. I'll eat when I'm fidgety or bored, so I'm assuming that a smoker who's trying to quit will eat because they're twitchy and nervous and need something to occupy himself.

I'm guessing those three things would add up to significant weight gain over the course of a few months / years / however long it takes to quit.

My mom quit smoking like 10 years ago. 2 years ago she developed Emphysima, COPD, and severe asthma. She's been in an ambulance a few times because of attacks of the three.

8 years after quitting.

She went from being in track and field in high school to not being able to climb a flight of stairs at 45.

She can't set foot into a greenhouse. She can't be around her pet cats that she loves because they set off her asthma. Her daily inhaler made her mouth so sensitive that she can't touch food that's even mildly sour or spicy or she gets mouth sores.

And I'm afraid for her being alone because if something happens she's helpless.

She smoked on average 2 packs a day since she was about 16.

There's your inspiration to quit early. I'll never smoke a cigarette (and I quit smoking weed even though I was a once a week smoker) because of how she is.
