Armada Online Alpha
Armada Online apparently had has open alpha signups since September 2006. How this became news is because it showed up on Fileplanet today, where it's currently sitting at their #2 download.

I'm about to try it out for the first time, I was just curious if anyone else is playing it.

Server appears to be updating at the moment. I'm on the forums, but there's no indication of any server status. It looks cool, but we might be in for old school MMORPGing. I made a Drakkan guy.
Not immediately obvious, but each of the people on the home page has an image next to them that actually is a link to something. Darius has a shipbuilder next to him where you can examine different configs:

Well, after playing it for a while i can say, that Vorgan and Drakken are treated just like Clerics and Druids in EQ!
People complain on the poor Drakken players just because they miss a heal if someone gets spanked lol!
The discussions were similar to those of EQ of old.
HEy! is Sniper afk or what?
I didnt get any heal!
Some namecalling...
Sniper-Cant a man take a piss without gettin called names! Sheesh!
etc
People demand too much out of Vorgens Resonators and Drakkens Synthesizers.
-
Terrans Plasma Torpedoes are great that slow down the enemy, especially good vs Harriers.
Point Laser is great as well since they shoot down enemy shots!
Terrans are, a pretty darn good race! Good for beginners.
-
Nomads Quantum Rockets Rock (immobilize!)
Their main cannon does most damage and is AE splash damage!
Good beginner race too!
-
People complain on high lvl Eldreds since they can assassinate / insta-kill.
-
I don't like my Scarabs Void Bombs that much!
-
Tip: Get the physicist as crew-members as soon as you get 1200 Influence!
Energy regen ftw!
Later on, Crisis Team for 2500!

I didn't, but I'll let you know if I see anything.Keverian FireCry wrote:Downloading it now.

edit: after the auto-updater it crashes upon opening. anyone else have that problem?
I played about an hour last night in a PvP zone. It was a lot of fun, but I was slightly lost. My fellow teammates were nice enough to help me out with some info.
After the 'match' was over, I did a little PvE. Looking forward to better understanding how to improve my ship and crew. Acquisition of the currency in this game seemed really slow last night.
I think now that I've been exposed to the game a bit the guides will probably make more sense.
Even though it's an alpha, I had zero technical issues and this is probably a good option for people with lower-end systems.

We're in that tricky period of technology where the older stuff actually starts to get more expensive than the newer stuff. It really depends on how much you want to spend, but personally I'd go: Nvidia, AGP, GeForce 6 Series.Keverian FireCry wrote:Does anyone know of a good affordable AGP card out there? I don't want to get a whole new board to have access to PCI express, but I need a new card since my old one died.
And I'd grab one of the 6800s.
I looked at the prices on the GeForce 7 series in AGP form factor, and I think they're too pricey for what they are.
Good luck, man.

Ok, so I played this some last night. I like what I see so far, but i'm confused as all hell. I picked Nomad as my class since it seems everyone else in the world likes the humans, and I like to be a damage class. I guess that was the right choice?
So anyway, here's how it went, could definately use some guidance from here.
I log on, there's the home base ala. Coruscant from Star Wars. It looks like you can purchase upgrades there once you have money, (I had money later and I still couldn't purchase anything though?).
I went to the NZ and flew around and killed some bugs and got killed by other players. I realize that the goal is to kill the enemy starbase, but what's the process along the way and how do you go about doing it? I also bought some skills/upgrades from the different stations which I liked, but they went away once the round was over... can you get those things permanently?
So then I went to Sector 3 or whatever and killed some more bugs. I found a ship with an exclamation mark over it, and did 2 quests with it.
Here's where I need some help... what am I supposed to actually "do"?
I've gotten my ship up to level 3 (I guess my captain follows). I've upgraded my main weapon twice and my missles once. I put two points into my captains weapon skills and one into the energy/shield thing (the middle one, not tactical but the other). I didn't see any difference though from doing that.
I've heard people talking about getting items and other stuff to upgrade their ship, and I've heard people talking about going off to different places to do such and such, but right now I'm lost. Some guy was nice enough to follow me around and help me kill bugs for a bit, and even hooked me up with level one items. (engine, weapon, power and something else). Where would I go about getting things like that? Also, where can I go to purchase the skills that I can get while in the NZ?
I like this game so far, I just wish it had something to tell me what I can/should do. I realize it's Alpha, so I'm counting on you guys to give me some help!!
BTW, ingame name is Kryshade, I'm always willing to go and do stuff when I'm on, so shoot me a tell if ya see me!
P.S. My only other complaint is when I would try to chat with someone, the game would toggle between full screen and windowed mode. What's the command to toggle that? I don't even know what I was pushing other than "enter" to send my chat when it would do it.

Ask anything you need and join parties in Delta 3 with these brave pilots and you will gain influence and experience quickly!.
NZ is like Dota (Defence of the Ancients), where if you destroy specific buildings, the enemy troops stop spawning and flies to your base etc.
The upgrades you buy during NZ are just during NZ (like the items bought in DOTA). Work together with the pilots and destroy enemy side key.buildings to stop unit-spawn and then destroy their Base(Tree/Necropolis) to win!
2000xp if you win, 1000xp if you lose.

To purchase new skills in "Coruscant" aka Allied Command, you need to have skill points.
You get Basic Skill Points every 3 lvls to place on your "stats", Weapons, Science, Tactics.
You get Skill points every 4 lvls to purchase new skills with (in Coruscant).
So beside the required influence you need skill points too.
To check how many Basic Skill pts and Skill pts you have, Click C for Character.
For every lvl, you get a point you can place on a shipsystem, click S for Ship.
-
Items.
When you mine Asteroids and Crystals , beside the normal minerals etc you can find crafting items there.
The more you mine, the higher your skill will become ie you will ding in mining too! To see your current miningskills, click C and check right side of menu.
Since you start with low crafting skill, you can only craft with tier1 crafting items (items on row 1).
They are separated with red arrow (weapon), blue plating(armor),yellow flash and green circle.
If you click the red arrow section and combine any 5 items in row 1 (can be same type of item), you can make items!

Beside getting items from roids and crystals, fight specific monsters for drops.
At lvl 10 you can choose two paths for your ship upgrade, usually Support and more Damage.
-
For example, normal Ore found from roids belong to Armor section, so combining lets say 5 Ores, you get an Armor item you can boost your ship with (click I to place items in your ship and O for your cargo with crafting items)

Awesome, thanks for the tips Kwon. Makes much more sense now. I didn't realize I needed skill points PLUS the influence to buy stuff in Coruscant (it really does look just like it doesn't it?!?)
I guess like any other MMO working in a group is key. I'll have to find some good crystals to start mining on as well! I'll be sure to add everyone to my friends list too. See you guys tonight!

Some stuff in Allied Command/Coruscant only costs influence. A physicist for example only costs 1200 inf.
The other thing about mining crystals and asteroids is that it's not really efficient to just fly around looking for things to mine. The cyrstals and asteroids seem to spawn randomly so it's better to fly around a given area killing a mob you can handle easily and/or a mob that you need a drop from and just take the crystals/asteroids as they come.
White crystals don't give any skillups for crystal mining, but the mineral chunks that come off of them do replenish your energy stores. When you see a chunk of something come off of an asteroid or crystal, click it and your tractor beam will real it in.
Also, when you're killing mobs, make sure you pull in the energy balls if no one needs them as some of them will have cumulative effects on your ship. I don't really understand the specifics yet... sorry.

For Crystals and Asteroids
Click Z for Starmap
All the Brown Systems are Asteroidsystems and the Dark Blue ones are Crystal ones.
-
And yes, Hiring Crew from Recruiter ONLY costs INF , since they are no skills and dont require skillpoints.
You start with a tier1 ship that can have 1 crew.
When you upgrade to tier2 ship you can have 2 crews.
Tier3 = 3 crews etc
