Season 2, Episode 1 rocked my socks off.

Holy shit what a good show. A lot of politics to cover in season two's opener but there was still action.

Can't miss TV.

Great beginning to the season. The last couple of scenes were especially awesome.

Yeah. The second season premiere was great. It seems like years since the first season, but I love that this season continues literally within minutes of happenings in the finale of the first season.

Can't wait to see how things unfold w/ Octavian and Antony at the reigns. I hope Servilia burns.

Loved the last 'exchange' between Antony and Quintus Pompey...

Unless history changes, we know Gaius Octavian (Augustus) and Antony aren't going to stay allied for long.

A quick search of the newsgroups turned up Rome Season 2 Episode 1 on alt.binaries.multimedia posted 2.4 days ago.

Here's a sample and a hint at the file name to search for:

wuwu - thx Winnow.

I got ep 1 off a torrent... along with eleventy-billion hits on PG2 from p2p abuser monitors. I'll look to the newsgroups until I have it live.

I do love how they show trained swordsmen cutting thier way through hordes of lesser men (Pullo and Vorenus in thier raid on the underboss, even without the details - in fact it was better as presented with the shieks and killing as an irritating background noise for Erastes Fulmen). The gun really was the great equalizer until the nuke came along.

To quote Octavian from s1 "The graveyards are full of midling swordsmen. Better to not be one at all." (or something to that effect)

On a related note, for those interested in catching up on any missed episodes, DVD rips of season 1 were posted (with par2 files) in a.b.multimedia on 16 Jan. I'm not sure of their quality or completeness but thought I'd mention it. Search for "Rome.S01.DVDRip.XviD" if interested.

Season 2, Episode 2 was a solid show but:
[Show]
What's with the scene in front of Atia's house where the kid is getting beat up. One of Atia's guard's breaks it up and then the kid offers to do anything for work and says he'll suck his cock.

This didn't seem to have anything to do with the rest of the episode. Maybe it was a nod to Deadwood and they wanted to add a few more bad words to the dialog.

I suppose it could have been used to show general chaos in the streets but it seemed out of place.

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing Winnow. So far this has been a very well written show, so it may yet be explained.

Octavian goes north to meet his friend... what's his name? I'm drawing a blank... Agilla? Argila? Damn I should know this  anyhow, if it follows what we know from history, that character should be a damn good one as well. He's young but tough who defends Octavian throughout his rise to power. I hope he's cast well.

Anyone know what actor is going to play him?

Allen Leech is playing Agrippa, but according to IMDB, he only shows up in 1 episode. Also of note, apparently Octavian/Augustus is going to be played by someone different beginning with episode 4 this season. Actor changes mid-season are not good for continuity, but I guess they didn't have much choice in the matter.
[Show]
I assume that the kid in the street that Winnow mentioned will be involved in a future episode, and they were just setting up some subplot, but the whole bit was a bit of a non sequitur as it was presented.

I think it's a combination of age, which would have been difficult to work around, and some other scheduling issues. I remember reading last spring that it was very questionable whether Max Pirkis, the current Octavian, would even be available for filming last summer.

Max Pirkis has done an excellent job playing Gaius Octavian.

It looks like Ben Whisaw will be the new Gaius Octavian.

Hmmm, I think you're right! From HBO's website:
Simon Woods ("Pride and Prejudice") joins the cast as the older Octavian, succeeding Max Pirkis, who played the younger Octavian in season one and the first part of season two. "I was a viewer in the first season, so it was exciting for me to be asked to join the show," says Woods. "I felt that because there was a gap in time between Max's portrayal and mine, I had some license in how I played him. I think Octavian is such a strange and interesting character. At first nobody took him seriously, but the funny thing is that he always takes himself very seriously."

He continues, "Octavian always has a plan going, which makes it fun to play him. You always know what he's trying to get out of any given situation, what he's trying to get out of other people. Octavian lacks many of the everyday pleasantries - he doesn't apologize, and he doesn't thank people. That doesn't mean he never feels gratitude, and that doesn't mean he never feels like apologizing, but he never expresses those feelings. He's incredibly guarded."

Why? "There's something about his upbringing that made him into quite a strange man," says Woods. "Just look at his relationships with his mother and his sister - they're all screwed up! As a result, he's had a kind of emotional shut-down, since his experiences have been so disastrous."

On the other hand, adds Woods, "I think Octavian is very good at listening to other people, which is I think is one of the things that's important in a great leader. It's a kind of humility, a word not normally associated with him."

Servillia was getting wtfpwnd. This should make things really interesting between her & Atia in the remaining episodes. It will also be interesting to see how Timon continues to develop.

-yeah, Servillia has been worked over twice now by Atia's henchmen. All that's left for her to cap things of is to be fucked by Baboons.

-The "boy who would suck cock" story has run its course!

-The new actor that plays Octavian seems OK although I preferred the original actor.

-Lucius Vorenus' children have had a rough life!

I'm curious how they're going to keep Vorenus in the story since what he should do is plop his ass down and fix his relationship with his kids (and his wife's heh). I was expecting they'd be found dead and that he'd be thrown into another rage.

The new Octavian, hrm, ok so far. Max Pirkis kicked ass, he'll be tough to follow.

Still looking forward to Octavian and Antony joining up to fight off Brutus/Longinus et el. I'm not surprised that Lepidus isn't cast, since they completely ignored him and his role in the first season, but it makes me wonder what they'll call the second triumvirate lol.

Season 2 rocks

Much better than Season 1, but that's primarily due to Season 1 being so predictable with the fate of Caesar,Cleopatra,Brutus et al.

While Season 1 may have had a bit slower pace, Season 2 is much more action-packed!

I called it!

That was one of the best episodes yet last night. I'm not liking the previews for next week though. Titus better not be unfaithful!

Edit:

I enjoy how Titus Pullo and Lucious Verenus are involved in everything that happens. I'm not looking for accuracy in their roles. It's interesting how Verenus doesn't kill his wife's son and it's the son that ends up running out in front of the carrier with the urgent message bound for Brutus.

I also can't help but like Mark Antony's character as played in the series. He had two great lines this last episode. The one was about having no idea what was going on in the battle and the other when he decided to add Atia's suggested name to the killing list.

Rome is an amazing show. The acting and fleshing out of the characters is wonderful - you feel a real emotional attachement (whether it be disdain, compassion, pity, like, etc.) to them.

I had a class in college called The Roman Empire. The prof was excellent and he made the class very interesting. I have been somewhat disappointed in the fact that I know the history behind what we are watching on the show - kind of like fast forwarding to the ending of a movie or book then going back and reading the meat.
[Show]
Here are some things that I remembered and had to go back and refresh myself on after watching last night's episode -

1. Cassius and Brutus - in reality they both committed suicide after the defeat of their army. I was seriously expecting Brutus to walk up to those legions and thrust the dagger into his abdomen - but I guess a little liberty by the writers was ok.

2. I remember reading that Cicero was beheaded and his hands cut off and nailed to the doors - last night they showed him being killed by having the gladius thrust into his torso from above. Rereading I learned that Antony's wife supposedly was given Cicero's head as a gift to which she cut out his tongue and repeatedly stabbed it to silence him once and for all - those crazy Roman broads...
I know where they are going with Timon and his brother in Judea - I think that will be an interesting side story - I just wonder how far this series will go - and I hope they are not prematurely fleshing out the history so that they will have to kill Rome in three seasons ala Deadwood style.

Unfortunately, Rome as a series is finished after this season. It would be a shame to have the massive investment in sets and costumes go to waste now, though. Maybe we'll be lucky and there might be a few Rome-based movies or mini series produced - probably wishful thinking, but I can have hope heh. As I've said before, I'm really going to miss this show when it's gone.
[Show]
I was a little disappointed that they portrayed Philippi as one massive, decisive battle, rather than series of land and sea battles that it actually was, but I understand the constraints that being one part of an 11 episode series imposes. Still, I think they should have presented it in a way that Octavian got bloodied and/or embarrassed a bit more. I'm OK with how they handled Brutus' death, as it made his end a bit more poetic echoing Caesar's end. Hopefully they'll find his body in the show so that Anthony can pay it respect, and return the ashes to Servilia - I'd hate to see them abandon that bit of history.

I'm with you in wishing that the battle was a little more fleshed out, but at least we got to SEE battle this time unlike last season where they just alluded to it. When Pullo was setting out from the picnic to kill Cicero and they made a big deal about him being careful etc etc, I was afraid they were going to kill him somehow. I should have had more faith in him!

It really is a shame that it's done after this season.

I see bad things coming next episode with that birth control concoction the slave has. I'm guessing Titus Pullo's wife will be drinking that and the baby dies.

Last night's episode was good as always but it was kind of an in between episode for the most part and the action should pick up again next week.

Good episode. I liked Tutus Pullo's wife but having her killed by the slave woman is sort of Karma for Pullo killing his wife's lover earlier I suppose.

Now it seems they're trying to make the slave girl into some sort of warrior women from what we saw in that last battle seen. She was out there hacking and stabbing away with all the men.

Octavian is becoming pretty harsh as expected.

A lot of great acting in this episode. I would have liked to have seen Vorenus kill his daughter after finding out what was going on. (after getting the guys name out of her first).

Shame there won't be a season three now that Tiberius is in the story but not yet seen.
