Why would I sit around fearing the exception to the rule? Hell, in my town of Battle Creek, Michigan, we just had 4 cops fired for beating the fuck out of a random person they pulled over. They were caught because the video cameras in thier police car caught everything on tape.

I also obey the law, and police still scare the shit out of me. The few I have known, even in passing were power hungry jerks.

My wife works at a college, and the FBI comes in every so often to do background checks on students applying to the academy. She says it puts the entire office on edge just knowing they are coming. No one wants to be the one to help them.

I do not trust my authority figures. At all. I am not alone.

There's a reason the framers of your constitution put checks and balances in place: people are fallible, and power does tend to corrupt. It might be a cliche but it's a cliche because it's fucking true.

Should you trust your police officers? Yeah, but it should never be blind trust. They're not infallible just because they wear a badge, and neither are soldiers, elected officials or clergymen.

Wait. Now you are suggesting that we can't blindly trust clergy, soldiersor elected officials (more) either? Isn't there anyone left for us to follow without having to worry about standing up for our rights?

I have never worked anywhere that left me feeling as if I could trust all my coworkers. I currently do computer support for Public Safety. The only cops I trust at all are the ones that are clear in saying they believe that 50% of their fellows are crooked. The ones that say it is barely a problem, I automatically categorize as part of the problem.

I agree that many cameras make law enforcement uncomfortable and quite frankly it is because the average police office in the US is undereducated, under trained and highly pressured to make regular arrests and write a fair number of tickets, this leads to them taking shortcuts, and even blatantly creating problems for citizens. Cameras are a good defence against this occurring, but I worry about the profusion of government cameras in public spaces also.

You cannot trust someone merely because they are given a badge and a gun anymore than you can count on someone being a good leader just because they were elected. Blindly desiring that your peace officers are in fact working for you is foolish. I would prefer to never have an encounter with ANY police officer, on or off duty for any reason WITHOUT it being taped. They lie, they lie about the most amazingly stupid things, they lie even when it is OBVIOUS that they are telling a lie. I have had them sit there insisting they did nothing at all to make their computer stop working, and then I boot the system, and eject the pirated Medal of honor CD with their name scribbled on in sharpie that it is trying to boot to. Over and over they will lie about anything and everything in an effort to cover their ass, we had to make them start putting everything they do in writing because they were just openly lying whenever we did not insist upon it. They got so bad playing one-upsmanship on each other that we had to start processing all their telecom work through the chiefs office because the silly bastards were bragging about breaking city cell phones so they could get "newer ones"

Officers are human, depending on the hiring practices of your local force, they are on average, complete scum up to semi respectable people. Most departments, being a governmental unit have had to adopt less than stringent hiring practices just to fill the slots with bodies.

The single most ignorant statements made on this thread relate to the concept that if you are doing nothing wrong, you have nothing to worry about. Ever heard of the concept of community? Your neighbor being screwed over by a lazy/incompetent/uncaring/criminal cop DOES effect you, regardless of how shallow you try to be about the issue. Each dirty cop undermines the respect that law enforcement sees which then makes the issue worse. Each lazy cop means you are more likely to be victimized.
