Why I like the desert

Post by Winnow »

I think I can put up with a little hot weather in the summer when I see pictures like these. These are from a town hit by an ice storm in Switzerland. Going to be a little late for work scraping the ice off your entire car?

All the snow we had on the ground here melted yesterday.

Some people may be happy with this but we're January in Canada and I'm finding this all a bit depressing...

Yeah, there has been no snow at all this year in Ohio, and been 50's all winter. Some people are happy, but I'm sort of also depressed. Can't even go snowboarding or skiing this winter anymore =/

I'm loving global warm...I mean no snow. Its throwing me off a bit when I'm driving around but I could get used to this.

BTW, those cars are like that because they are next to the water. If you notice everywhere else like the building, they are perfectly fine.

What's snow? It's a big deal if it hits freezing this year :( I'm gonna blame Bush for this as well.

I noticed the East is having some sort of "Arctic blast" making everything chilly!
(AP) -- A bone-chilling Arctic cold wave with temperatures as low as 42 below zero shut down schools for thousands of youngsters Monday, sent homeless people into shelters and put car batteries on the disabled list from the northern Plains across the Great Lakes.
Brrrrr!

At least our airports and pipes don't break down when it's hot! The only time the airport shut down due to heat was briefly ten or so years ago when it reached 122F. I think 120F is the cut off before they have to shut the runways down.

Look up zip code 33141 for where I live. While I love that I can go to the beach a block away in February, I envy people who get to experience four seasons.

That's high humidity and hurricane territory!

Sweet pictures.

I've had to walk to and from class with -10 to -20 degree temps (actuality: 0 to -5, but feels like -10 to -20 according to weather.com) for the past week or two, and I generally walk outside for about an hour to an hour and ten minutes every day, just commuting between classes.

It's been a bitch.

roughly one and a half years ago they had to shut down McCarran in Vegas because it reached 119. It was closed for a couple hours.

Couple weeks later, the A/C in my apartment went out..........

I've seen storms like that in South Dakota, though not nearly as bad. We had the temperature drop from the mid 40's to -6 over the course of 1 day in 1999 or 2000 (or maybe 98 or 01, I can't remember and I don't want to think about it long enough to recall). We also had snow as late as June 3rd and as early as September 1st. Right now it is -4F outside, and I am glad I'm not in SD anymore, as there would be a 35 mph wind to back that cold up. Yay, global warming!

You just don't appreciate the beauty of the desert and the cute little lizards that run around.

BTW, Arizona has plenty of water and no rolling blackouts. Oh, and Arizona has about a $1.4 billion dollar surplus and is cutting state taxes by 10% over the next two years.

How's California doing? I can kick things off by mentioning its $38.2 billion deficit!

You should have been a politician... 38.2 billion = about a grand a person, right in line with other states. 7th largest economy in the world and almost all of it far away from the groomed beaches and bright lights of Hollywood. Without California, America collapses, without Arizona, America... is fine.

I found Arizona to be visually stunning when I lived there, didn't stop me from realizing it is a hellhole with a nice view.

Pherr the Dorf wrote: I found Arizona to be visually stunning when I lived there, didn't stop me from realizing it is a hellhole with a nice view.
If you're referring to something other than the heat, what makes Arizona a hell hole?

I've lived in California two separate times. Once in the Anaheim area and the other in the Mojave Desert (George AFB which no longer exists). It's a nice place to visit. Yosemite and Sequoia National parks are nice weekend camping trips, the Redwood forests are awe inspiring, San Fransisco and San Diego make for decent weekend trips from time to time. The beaches aren't that great (compared to just about everywhere else in the world besides the Northern East coast of the U.S.) The California current, feeding off the Subarctic current in the Pacific make for some frigid water temps. Huntington Beach area is another nice place for a few hours but that's about it and then it's time to go. Driving around the Napa Valley wine tasting isn't bad either. All of the things I mentioned are OK for a short duration visit but when it comes to living there, no thanks.

Arizona matches California visually. It just depends on if you like desert vistas or smoggy views of cold water beaches with oil rigs and tankers on the horizon. That's one of the many reasons that makes the United States a great place to be - all climates and terrains are available depending on your preference. If you like hurricanes, head southeast, if you like earthquakes, head far west, if you like terrorist attacks, head northeast, if you like people that say pop instead of coke, head to the midwest or Great Lakes areas. If you want to see what it's like to be a Canadian, head to Alaska. If you like the tropics and nice beaches, head to Hawaii. If you like beautiful sunsets, wide open spaces yet with all the conveniences of a big city, head to the Southwest.

Noone will ever mistake Phoenix as a world class city, SF certainly is. Like I said I could certainly see the beauty in the desert, comperable to Joshua Tree and the like in south eastern California, Flagstaff and the other mountain areas can be a stunning change from the low or high desert, hell I lived in the middle of the Saguaro National Monument and had hawks nesting in my yard, it was pretty cool. The heat was ugly, brutally ugly, the dust, the flooding when it decided to rain. Californians as a whole do not leave the state in large numbers, never have. The same arguement that Seattle used a decade ago is being used now. Just because some schmuck moves from Ohio to LA then decides to move to Scottsdale because he can't seem to make it here does not mean a Californian moved to AZ. The greater Phoenix area has become a congested clusterfuck rivaling LA in terms of poor planning for explosive growth. At least the state is following Tucson's model for water conservation because when you spike to 6.4 million in 18 years from the 4.2 you have now... you all, vegas and LA are going to have some UGLY court battles (thankfully vegas growth has stagnated for the most part).

Arizona gets the bulk of our water from ground water so no court battles like California always has trying to suck as much water from the Colorado River as it can using the mega long aqueducts.

I'm concerned about the rapid population growth of the state. Sucks. Nevada and Arizona are slowing becoming like California unfortunately...will be time to move another state inland sometime in the future.

Anyways, I'm mostly joking around with locations although I would never want to live in California as it is today. Just personal preference.

I will add, I am completly and totally having fun too, there were nights watching the lightening bounce off the Catlinas that rivaled anything I have seen at Half Dome, and I got to enjoy it from the house I was living in. I have lived many places around the country, wine country suits me to a tee as far as my love of food, wine and culture, I am totally hedonistic and if you know the area it is a wonderful place to be. It is not cheap but thankfully the land is worth far too much as vineyard/ag land to be converted to housing so we are relatively safe from too much more growth.

No falling sheets of ice or giant icicles to impale you in the desert!
Flying ice from CN Tower closes highway

Canadian Press and Globe and Mail Update

TORONTO — Sheets of ice being sheared off the CN Tower in downtown Toronto by strong winds have prompted police to close a section of a busy east-west highway and limit access on a key route into the heart of the city's financial district. The Gardiner Expressway along the city's waterfront has been closed in both directions along a 2.5 kilometre stretch (between Yonge Street and Spadina Avenue).

I can't stand it anymore! I had to turn on my air conditioner. It's going to be in the freaking 90's all weekend. That's 15 degrees above normal for this time of year.

Damn you ice dwellers!

Thursday 92°F (33°C)
Friday 95°F (35°C)
Saturday 94°F (34°C)
Sunday 90°F (32°C)
Monday 90°F (32°C)

That forecast is insane even for here. 95 degrees in March!

I'm voting for Al Gore if he can invent something on the internet that will get the heat down like 20 degrees.

Damn you ice dwellers!

Thursday 92°F (33°C)
Friday 95°F (35°C)
Saturday 94°F (34°C)
Sunday 90°F (32°C)
Monday 90°F (32°C)

That forecast is insane even for here. 95 degrees in March!

I'm voting for Al Gore if he can invent something on the internet that will get the heat down like 20 degrees.

Still,

using an index finger to apply enough force to a button on your AC controller to turn it on

vs

scraping ice off windshields, slip sliding around on the roads, THOs, snowplows, icy sidewalks, death icicles and more!

Misters are big in AZ as well which we can use due to the lack of hair-poofing, drink sweating humidity.
