Boise!

Post by Kilmoll the Sexy »

Wow what a 4th quarter! It is nto so much that I care wh owon, but damn that Boise coach has a set of marbles on him the size of moons. It is nice to see the little guys win a game like this....especially with the 2 absolutely sweet plays they used to win it.

Now if we can just educate the fucking journalists and "experts" that it is NOT a fucking hook and "ladder" play......it is hook and LATERAL you retarded monkeys.

It was a highly entertaining game.

The hook and "lateral" play at the end to tie up the game was outstanding as was the Statue of Liberty play used on the 2 pt conversion.

Some question the call to go for two but when it only took Oklahoma on play to score in overtime, I think the coach could see his team might be wearing down.

The Boise St QB did throw two bad picks which setup the exciting finish. It's one of the best college games I've seen recently. Boise St demonstrated that it could hang with a "big" school.

Umm... the "Hook-and-ladder" is the common (and perfectly acceptable) name for this specific play which incorporates a lateral. You might want to check your facts before lambasting the "experts." That aside, it was an incredible game to watch. I was getting frustrated at OU and almost changed channels when it was 28-10. I'm so glad I didn't or I'd have missed the incredible ending. What a classic game.

I stopped watching when it was 28-10 but had checked back in on it as they were scoring the touchdown that put it to 28-28. What a great ending for a good Boise St. team. I have been saying for the past few years that Zabransky is a highly underrated quarterback. I think, if he goes, he will be a great QB in the NFL.

As per the definition of Hook and Ladder:
Definition: A pass play in which the receiver catches a pass facing toward the line of scrimmage, then laterals the ball to another offensive player who is racing toward the opponent's end zone.
Well he wasn't completely facing the line of scrimmage, he was kinda facing the far sideline... it looked like it was a planned play, the Boise receiver made no attempt to move the ball upfield before he lateralled it.

So it's pretty obvious it was a fucking hook and ladder play.

I think he was referring to the fact that they use the word ladder instead of lateral, instead of arguing what the play actually was.

Well yea... it literally is a hook and then a lateral.

So like, they like took the dull sounding play: hook and lateral and tried to come up with something a little more appealing like flea flicker or hail mary... and lateral sounds a whole lot like ladder... especially in a southern drawl.

Seriously, go look it up!
Hook and Ladder is the accepted name for that play.

It is NOT the accepted term except by idiots who misinterpreted it because they have no idea what a lateral is. Football coaches call it a hook and lateral. Misinformed sportscasters call it a hook and ladder. This annoys me as much as the changes to the english language disgust the brits.

Not like Kellen Winslow would know anything about football terminology.

Or any of the other sites on the 28k hits I got when I googled Hook and Ladder + Football.

Oh look, here's another football player making a reference to hook and ladder

Somehow I think I'll take the word of football players or sportscasters over the word of someone who has probably not been near a football field in 20 years (if ever).

I always considered it Hook-and-Ladder based on the routes. Primary Receiver runs a Curl/Hook with the pass being completed as he's coming back toward the line-of-scrimmage. Secondary receiver is running a delayed slant across the middle of the field (resembling a ladder leaning from one sideline to the other).

O really? Find some plays called a ladder route in your google search that is not a direct reference from "hook and ladder". You won't find any. Sportscasters and writers have been fucking it up for almost 2 decades. It was always a hook and lateral until too many retards could not understand what it was being called and butchered it into bolivion. (intentional)

As for me playing shithead.....I have played more football than your lazy ass has pushed keys at your desk while eating doritos. I would venture to say I know the rules and the game better than a good 85% of the damn sportscasters and writers that cover it.

Thats quite a feat, assuming he may have done that 5-6 times even for an average of 1 hour at a time thats almost 5 or 6 hours of football!

...who were you responding to here? I KNOW it's a lateral, not a ladder. I also understand that there is no "Ladder" route. I "accepted" people saying Ladder because I could at least understand a way in which it would be possible to justify calling it that. Also, if a coach does want to teach it to players as a Hook-and-Ladder play, that is what it is to them.

I was mostly responding to the poster above you that did not even know what the play was until he Googled it and believes what wikipedia says about it.

Mike Golic railed on this subject this morning on Mike & Mike. He of course said there is no such thing as a ladder and it is a hook and lateral. Miir won't accept this of course because wikipedia says it ain't so.

And of course when they had guest Bill Curry on (10 year NFL vet, and 17 year college coach, prior to becoming a commentator), he said Mike Golic was a moron, and that it is called "Hook and Ladder".

At least give the complete story when giving your argument :P

That's fine if you don't want to acknowledge that Hook and Ladder is an accepted name for that play. Nobody is forcing you to call it that.

But the term has been used for decades.
It's just a play on words.

Christ man, if you get this fucking riled up about football terminology, I'd hate to see how you deal with stress.

I played football for most of my life up until I chose the University of Michigan over a number of D-III schools (and a couple small D-I schools) that were recruiting me pretty heavily to play football. I say that only to offer my qualification to speak on the subject.

I've almost always heard it referred to as a "Hook and Ladder". Perhaps you would prefer to think of it as a "Hook and Later' (as in Later[al])".

Googlefight, which I have never used for anything meaningful before though it seems to fit in this case, agrees.

Considering "Hook and Ladder" is a term used for other things than a football play, the googlefight isn't very fair!

Image

Do a google image search for "Hook and Ladder"

Google Search: Hook and Ladder

Google Image search for Hook and Lateral:

Google Search: Hook and Lateral

Not very conclusive but I saw a few football images with the lateral.

Hook and lateral makes more sense to me but I'm not an expert on football terminology and never played the game on any level other than streetball or flag football (like Mel Kiper!) so who knows! I;m ok with either.
