Why do people keep saying the Wii won't support 480p/i? The one's I've seen do. Perhaps its just the games not taking advantage of it yet.Jice Virago wrote: If you disregard the controller, my only real gripes with the Wii are the lack of even 480i HD support and limited RPG selection. The console delivers on all other accounts, but the controller is a big hurdle to look past.
There's new competition for the Wii!

I didn't realize commodore was making a comeback, selling close to 600k units the week Wii was released and continuing to sell 200k a week throughout the holiday season. Congratz to them for coming back so strong!
At least I assume thats what is happening if they are to be considered competition for the Wii...
BTW Winnow I don't get why you care so much. People buying the Wii either are getting it as well as a 360, or they wouldn't be buying a 360 or PS3 anyway. I'm not sure I understand why you loath the Wii so much.

i loathe that my wii doesn't have HD output...i think it was a mistake not including it...honestly i wonder how much more it would cost end users if there was high def output on the wii. hopefully nintendo has another system in the works for release in three years from now, or the wii will show its age rather quickly at least in the US where HI-def television will be common place in most homes in the comming few years.
i
wii otherwise.

That one is odd. The first two shots of the kid playing Space Invaders on the Atari 2600 (with camera facing TV) has the joystick in the wrong position. It gets it right for the next one. Fire button in the upper left not lower left!Winnow wrote:The first college guilt trip commercial concerning video games? Someday, both will be trying to get into college. I was the kid on the right!

According to Nexgenwars.com's estimates, Wii crested the million units sold last night.

So I tried a Wii at EB today over lunch.
They only had ExciteTruck in there so I got to play that for 5-10 minutes.(which doesn't surprise me now that I think of it since the space is limited and people tend to be retarded - see wiihaveaproblem.com)
The controls respond pretty well, the control type is pretty innovative and feels on. I didn't feel like a retard playing the thing in full view of people walking around in the mall either.
The only issue I have with the controller in the sideways position (and I have the same issue with my DS lite) is that after 5 minutes or so of play, my hand started cramping up. I get the same thing after about 30 minutes or so of DS play.
Nintendo really needs to start making a version of the controllers for adult hands. I have no problems with the 360 controller, the stock Dual Shock controller nor do my hand hurt using a mouse/keyboard. I'm pretty sure holding the Wiimote in a controller fashion wouldn't hurt as well but sideways like ExciteTruck and the VC titles are meant to be played could be painful in the long run.
They also had their PS3 display, it was off and there was a loud whirring sound coming from the display(probably a cooling fan). It's too bad cause I would've liked to see the Crossbar for myself.

I'm really surprised at how much Wii has become the "must have" for this x-mas, happy but surprised. People who can't find a Wii yet are already buying wiimotes and games they think they may have a hard time finding later... crazy.

Now for the "stand the test of time test"! Repost in six months if the gameplay is still fantastic. (not saying it won't be, I'm genuinely curious)Zaelath wrote:Got to play Wiisports this weekend. Fantastic.
As to graphics, couldn't tell you, too busy enjoying the gameplay.
I don't think Nintendo's going to take as long as Microsoft or Sony release a Wii successor so if this doesn't turn out to be a fad, their next console might be interesting if they spring for an extra $20.00 to make it an HD console. (they can make up the difference by charging $80 instead of $60 for the otherwise $2.00 component cable that only the 360 supplies out of the big three consoles.
Wii could end up being the electronic version of Trivial Pursuit. Everyone bought that game and now you might find it if you look deep enough in the back of a closet. The Wii could bring back old fads...think of this...you could do the "Macarena" dance using the Wii motion remote and score perfect points if you remember that dance from 1996...or strap two Wii remotes to your feet and do the Running Man dance.
Motion Control has possibilities but how long do you want to do the Running Man? I barely want to move my mouse.
Now, I don't know shit about consoles. I haven't played the Wii or the PS3. I played a 360 for about 15 minutes once. Nor do I care about consoles or video games of TV's. I own an N64 and a tube TV. Thus, I am supremely unqualified to comment on the merits of the system, and as such, I possess a somewhat unique perspective on this thread.
What I do know is the amount of general chatter I hear about the console among the circle of people I associate with. Most of these people are in their 20's and are also not video game sorts. They also represent a signficant battleground for console producers. Unlike the people in this thread who are saying things like "I might buy one as a minor part of my gaming rig," these are people who are likely to purchase only one machine in a generation, if any. Beiing successful in this market gives a manufacturer a huge boost.
And I hear people talking about the Wii all the time. Constantly. People don't talk about the PS3 or the 360, unless it's in the context of discussing ridiculous ebay prices. Virtually no one owns one, or has even used one. People just don't care. The Wii is a totally different story. I have no idea if the interest will hold up, but the 360 has had a year to build interest and hasn't done it, and I can't imagine that something as expensive and unwieldy as a PS3 will develop massive grassroots support anytime soon either.

picked up elebits this weekend. it's the first game for the wii that i've played and didn't really want to stop playing after about 30 minutes. it's cute and has a katamari-ish feel to it. basically you have to capture elebits to amass electricity, which you use to turn on appliances so you can upgrade your gun so you can capture more elebits and save the world and chuck pianos across your living room. sounds simple but it's more fun and original than anything else i've played for the wii.

I FINALLY got to try out the Wii this past weekend. First i went by an EBgames store where i was able to play Excite Truck for a bit. Pretty fun game, but i've never been a huge fan of racing games anyway. Later on in the evening i went to a friends house for dinner and booze... and one of my other friends that happened to show up had a Wii in his car, so we plugged it up and i finally got to play Wii Sports. All i gotta say is that Wii Sports alone pretty much has me sold. We spent hours playing the boxing and tennis games which made me work up a sweat to say the least. At one point i got soo into boxing that i was a few inches away from putting my first through my friends big screen tv haha.... boxing + continuous Jager shots = damage.
After i was worn out from Wii Sports my friend showed me a bit of the zelda game which looked damn good, but by that time i was pretty blasted so my attention span wasn't all that hehe.
I'm dying to buy one, but something is telling me to hold off a while just to see how the system does in the long run. Overall, it may not give me the same experience as the other two consoles in the long run, but playing games like Wii Sports with friends makes from priceless moments

There are no Wiis available from any online retailers, and all the stores in Miami my coworker hit this weekend were sold out as well.
How many units did Nintendo ship?

depends on who you ask. NPD said 476k were sold in november in the US, http://nexgenwars.com/ says 1.8 million total (based on 'constantly monitored' estimates). but just over 38k wiis have been sold on ebay.masteen wrote:How many units did Nintendo ship?

Ok ill shed some light on this subject from the experiences i've had since launch day..
First of all, dont hold your breath on getting one unless you feel like camping out a day in advance for it.. (i did with a friend of mine.. i know.. we're fucking crazy).
Second, if you do decide to camp it out, get there rather early the night before (8-9pm..seriously). We camped out at bestbuy (i work loss prevention for BB.. they tools that stand at the door and say hi and harass you for your receipt when you leave..yeah thats me..it blows).. We got there at about 1:30 am and were number 24 on the list.. they got 22 in.. and we still got one (in a Rocky like ending)..
Was it worth it? Hell yeah. I'm addicted to it.. The Wii Sports games they give you with it are so cool.. Espicially the boxing.. the wiimote responds really well to your movement and makes gameplay a lot of fun..
My apologies if this didnt make much sense... It's late and I just got out of that shithole.. But hope it helped out in some way in case anyone is still thinking about getting it.
