You're thinking of a different year. Michigan beat Washington State in the '98 Rose Bowl ('97 season), Nebraska beat Tennessee in the Orange Bowl or something like that. Michigan was #1 in both polls, Nebraska was #2 in the Coaches' Poll and ended up jumping Michigan in that poll.
There's a story told 'round these parts that it was the result of Phil Fulmer voting against Michigan because Payton Manning got snubbed on the Heisman Trophy that year (and Michigan's Charles Woodson won it), but I've never seen anything official to back it up. Quite possibly an urban legend.

It's hard to have a "greatest" rivalry in the SEC, because we play so many big games every season. UT, Auburn, LSU, UGA, Bama... it must be nice to just have one big game every season. It's easy to see the ONLY rivalry amidst a sea of mediocre opponents and mistake it as great.
Michigan plays all of TWO ranked teams this season, and it's not like the Irish deserve to be ranked as high as they are now. OSU isn't much better, but at least they scheduled Texas.
But by all means continue fellating each other. Soon enough at least half of you will shut the fuck up and the rest of the country can go back to ignoring you as usual.
p.s. I'm betting that it will be the BLUE half

I kinda quit reading this about halfway through the first page...but who is anyone to tell another person what the biggest rivalry is? In your area I'm sure everyone is all about OSU\Michigan or whatever, but I don't think I've ever watched either team even play an entire game. Want to know why? Because down here, we dont give a fuck. We have our own rivalries...Alabama \ Auburn is huge around here, it did not die in the 70s. Its still very strong between the schools, and isnt that what matters?
The rivalry is between the teams and the students\alum behind them mostly. And for how long its been going on...the first game was in 1893. Thats when it started, and its been big for that long. Its in state and its usually a tossup about who wins...even though Auburn has won the past 4 years, and we are doing better than Bama this year we could still lose easily. The Ironbowl is always a good game.
But anyway, enough of that rant. I just think its retarded to claim something such as biggest rivalry in college football.

If we had one big game every season then we would go into the big game undefeated every season.
By the way, Sylvus, have you heard any grumblings up north about the game being moved to 8:30pm? Apparently ABC has the rights to move the game to primetime if they feel necessary. However, that would be even more sacreligous than moving it to 3:30pm. (kegs n' eggs starts at 5:30am, a mere 10 hour before hand as it is, but fuck, 15 hours is just stupid)

Again, get over yourself. How many more ranked teams does Florida play this year than we do? None? Oh yeah! We had #2 at the time Notre Dame, we have #1 Ohio State, and we defeated Wisconsin who are #17 after we beat them and without the luxury of being overrated in the preseason rankings. You have Tennessee, Auburn and LSU.masteen wrote:Michigan plays all of TWO ranked teams this season, and it's not like the Irish deserve to be ranked as high as they are now. The bottom line is that everyone has pride for their team/conference. The five teams you mention aren't always good, and there are 5 teams (at least) in the Big 10 that are games that those teams always get up for when they play Michigan, and are teams who have their ups and downs (read: all of whom have played in bowl games in the last 10 years). Zamtuk will probably tell you it's the same for Ohio State, but when you ask someone from Ohio State, Notre Dame or Michigan State who their biggest rival is they'll all say Michigan. Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Penn St. will be split but we'll be up there. Ask Michigan who our rival is, the answer will be Ohio State, without fail.
I'm not trying to say you don't have any rivals, shit I wasn't the one who brought it up as the biggest rivalry. All rivalries are great, I'm sure that if I grew up an Alabama fan, the Auburn rivalry would be the end-all be-all. Rivalries are part of what makes college football the best sport that there is. Some clown might think that an NFL rivalry is better, but that's only because he doesn't have an NCAA program to support.
The fact though is that more people outside of our region care about the Michigan vs. Ohio State rivalry than those outside of other regions care about those rivalries. That's a fact, there is documented proof so don't come back and say it isn't unless you can provide any argument other than "not around here it isn't!" It doesn't say anything about who is a better football team, who competes more for national championships in any arbitrary period, what kind of ratings it's going to get in every market in the world, who is stupid for not caring about it or anything along those lines.
Numerous times, people have been asked to vote, Michigan vs. Ohio State comes up on top. The editors at the World Wide Leader agreed that it was #1 in all of sports. I don't think that the Michigan-Ohio region is the most populous in the nation, nor do I think the editors at ESPN are all homers from the area. Feel free to keep disputing it, but you'll probably get the walls in your parents' basement to listen to you before anyone else will.
We're not fellating each other, in fact, in order to do so we're going to have to get in line behind the pundits, fans and rest of the country to do so. Here's what we've got:
- Two of the 10 greatest programs in college football history (including Notre Dame, Alabama, USC, Oklahoma)
- Over 100 meetings of the two teams
- Play each other every year
- Ranked #1 and #2
- Play in last game of the season.
- National Championship berth hinging on it.
I've heard that is 100% a rumor. One of the sites I read linked to this story (but I can't access it from work... I think that's the right one)Zamtuk wrote:By the way, Sylvus, have you heard any grumblings up north about the game being moved to 8:30pm? Way to glean the most important part of that post! Re-read some of Masteen's posts in this thread, all he's doing is talking shit.

Not lopsided? Until Capt. Sweatervest came to OSU and started bringing quality recruits like Maurice Clarett, Michigan used to beat the living fuck out of the Buckeyes almost every season.
p.s. Unless it's in the Comics or Computers forums, all I ever do here is talk shit. Sylvus, are you a detective, IRL?

Thats because John Cooper is a piece of shit, and always was. And that also brings up another valid point. How many other schools fire their coach solely for the reason that they can't beat their rival? Cooper had some great years, and had a pretty solid record, he just couldn't beat Michigan. Or any opponent in a bowl game for that matter.

Ray Goff was fired because he couldn't beat Florida, and Mark Richt has gone from the savior to the hot seat for the same reason.
Curry and DuBose were fired because he couldn't beat Auburn.
Terry Bowden was fired because he only beat Alabama once.
Phil Fulmer was on the hotseat at UT until he managed to beat Spurrier (and coincidentally went on to a national title).
Gerry DiNardo at LSU was fired because he couldn't get them past UF, Bama, and Auburn.
That's just off the top of my head.

The last time one of you hot shit southern teams had to play the big 10 for the National Championship....I do believe OSU sent the unbeatable fags from Miami back home to explain how they lost to a 3 yards and a cloud of dust team that had no QB that would start for most high school teams.
This OSU team...and Michigan for that matter....are even more solid right now than the 2002 OSU team.

Then I guess it's a good thing that the Big 10 only has a team worth a shit every decade or so. I am curious what OSU could have done the past couple seasons if Maurice wasn't such a stupid thug, and they had had some consistent running back play.
It was awesome watching the Illini get better and better and almost pull one off against the Buckeyes too. I'm gonna laugh when our former head coach wins a Big 10 title after not being able to hack it in the SEC.With that great performance against Ball St. I think the hype is dead.

not nearly as awesome as watching vanderbilt take you fucks to the wire too.
oh wait, i forgot, you've all but dropped out of the national title hunt. then again with a school as rich in tradition as UF (we made gatorade!) i'm sure you're used to watching most january games from the comforts of your own home.
leak 4 heisman?!

You do realize Antonio Pittman is at 952 yds for the year and 11 TDs.
He needs 48 yds to go over 1000 for the year after getting 1331 7 TDs last year.
When you have Troy Smith throwing the crap out of the ball how much is Antonio going to get to carry?

I was at the game (on the field, yay!), and I don't think it was as bad as some of the opinions I've read. Ball State got half of their total yards and 14 of their points off two plays where our second string DB's were in and got burned. Our starters were sitting pretty early, we still outgained them by 200 yards, and we put up 350 yards running. I would expect that Indiana will also be a close game, as the strategy seems to involve keeping people healthy and rested for the Ohio State game.
A couple more rivalry fun facts: Michigan has more alumni than any other school, Ohio State has the largest current student population. Saturday's game was also the 200th straight home game that saw over 100,000 people attending.

Yeah, that seems pretty likely since he's won two games total and is at the bottom of the conference, it'll probably happen next year! A victory over Michigan State does not a Big 10 Champion make.masteen wrote: I'm gonna laugh when our former head coach wins a Big 10 title after not being able to hack it in the SEC.

I was more thinking about 2002 and how that team kinda went away for a couple seasons. Clarett would have been a beast in his soph and junior years. Just a what could have been kinda question, not a knock on Pittman.Sabek wrote:You do realize Antonio Pittman is at 952 yds for the year and 11 TDs.

Hate to break it to you Zammykins, but we're closer to the title than whoever loses the OSU/Michigan game. Lousiville's SOS is shit, and both the Gators and Texas are poised to pass them in the BCS with any sign of more weakness on their part. Arky dropping their 2 tough games would actually help us out by giving us a rematch against Auburn in Atlanta, but I just don't see the Razorbacks losing both of them.Zamtuk wrote:not nearly as awesome as watching vanderbilt take you fucks to the wire too.

Losing our best defensive lineman hurt, especially late in the fourth as we couldn't rotate the big boys as much. I can't believe Marcus Thomas would rather go to Halloween Horror Nights than play NCAA football.

Patrick Stewart didn't actually go to U of M, he's been in town for a couple weeks with the Royal Shakespeare Company doing performances.

Jon Stewart had a pretty accurate description of the OSU vs. UM rivalry last week. Does being mentioned on the Daily Show help people see that it's the biggest rivalry around?

My district. I voted for Pryce, but Kilroy carried the majority in Frankin County, so if there's 18K votes outstanding she'll probably win it.COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- In a state chided by visiting comedian Jon Stewart last week for its football obsession, vote counting is being sidelined during the much-anticipated Ohio State-Michigan game.
The decision by county election officials not to open November 18 -- the day of the storied gridiron rivalry -- will delay an official result for another closely watched matchup: incumbent GOP Rep. Deborah Pryce vs. Democratic challenger Mary Jo Kilroy.
Pryce leads Kilroy by as many as 3,536 votes, depending on which tallies are used, but Kilroy has yet to concede because of 18,000 uncounted absentee and provisional ballots in Franklin County, where the vast majority of uncounted ballots were cast.
By law, election boards may begin counting such ballots on November 18, but they may also wait until November 22. Franklin County, home to Ohio State, will begin its count November 19.
County Elections Director Matthew Damschroder grudgingly conceded that football factored into the one-day delay but said worker fatigue was a bigger issue.
"We've worked every Saturday since probably August," Damschroder said. "We're going to give our people a Saturday off."
The decision followed a week of broadcasts from Ohio State's campus by "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" that mocked the state's football fanaticism. Correspondents reported from far-flung Ohio locations reeling from the weekend's high school football scores. At one point, Stewart likened the vicious Ohio State-Michigan rivalry to a Sunni-Shia feud.
Kilroy is hanging her hopes of victory on Ohio State students.
She campaigned heavily with the campus crowd -- including appearing at a campus rally with 2004 presidential contender John Kerry -- and believes many of the uncounted ballots were cast by Ohio State students who support her.
Again, THE GAME > Politics
- Ash
I also went with Pryce as Kilroy has her head up her cunt on almost every stance she takes. I am really shocked at how close its been.
Anyways, I'm sure masteen and others will point out something like all other states will have their votes counted in time by working heavy overtime so they can have off for their respective rivalry games.

The Game is this week!! I'm so excited, I'm also fairly certain that I'm going to get beaten/killed while I'm down in Columbus. Hopefully we win beforehand!
I heard an interesting stat this weekend, that it's like the first time that two teams from the same conference have met each other at #1 vs. #2 in 20-30 years. The last meeting was between Big 12 teams (Oklahoma and Nebraska or something like that), even though the SEC has bigger games than this one every week.
