I personally think the main reason he resigned is so he isn't dragged in front of the Armed Services Committee in a hostile environment when he's still directly associated with the administration. Rummy tends to say dumb things when confronted with opposing points of view and/or dissent - this way the administration has insulated itself from his angry utterances. I guess we'll see what/how this all comes out in the upcoming oversight hearings.

You could sit him in an open field under a cloudless sky and he would tell you with a straight face that the sky is green.. and that he has intelligence reports to back it up.Animale wrote:I personally think the main reason he resigned is so he isn't dragged in front of the Armed Services Committee in a hostile environment when he's still directly associated with the administration. I am glad Rumsfeld is out as well...but remember that he offered his resignation twice to Bush and twice bush would not accept it. Rumsfeld was a relic...Bush is far to concerned with loyalty to his friends and associates at the cost of our nation's well being.
Bush couldn't do the right thing and accept Rumsfeld's two previous resignations...so the citizens of this country had to do it for him.
Had Bush accepted the resignation two years ago, yesterday's results may have been quite different.

You got to be kidding me. Rumsfeld was no scapegoat. He was a worthless sack of shit and it is primarily because of him that Iraq is the shit storm it is today. Before the war started, Rummy refused to listen to more informed opinions on what was going to happen. He continued to disregard advice and strategies from career military leaders with way more experience than him.
His previous resignation attempts were publicity ploys at best. He never had any intention of ever stepping down until he was finally forced out now. I really think that if he had resigned two years ago, the war would be a lot different. Not sure if it would be better but it couldn't be worse.

I agree with Kyoukan. He had a hell of a lot more of a hand in this than any 'scapegoat'.
I do however think that it's Cheney pulling the strings. I think it's possible that Cheney might be historically considered the most powerful VP ever (obviously not a good thing).

Perhaps the U.S president will go the route of British Royalty (completely useless gossip magazine material) while the Vice President takes on the Prime Minister's role.noel wrote: I do however think that it's Cheney pulling the strings.
