Toronto had an impressive preseason despite some key injuries. Colangelo has given the team a fresh look with a lot of european/international players.
I can't see them winning the division but they may make it a few rounds into the playoffs. My nod goes to them for Most Improved.

Yeah, I'm interested to see how Brian Colangelo does up there in Toronto. Hoping they do well except vs the Suns.

Can you really say the Suns underachieved the last two seasons?

2005: Complete turnaround from losing team, not in the playoffs to best record in the league and Western Conference Finals with basically five players on the team and zero bench.

2006: Lose "franchise" player Amare Stoudemire, and make it back to the Western Conference Finals with a team of midgets.

How quickly we forget the doom and gloom when it was learned Amare was out for the season.

2007 will be the first season they can underachieve as they are projected to challenge for the championship...something they weren't expected to even come close to in 2005 and 2006 (after Amare went down before the season started)

Prediction: Miami gets blown out by 40+ opening night by Chicago.

Phoenix lost their first game last year and did ok. I'll be a little more concerned if they lose to the Clippers at home tonight.

Amare had a dunk, powered up a basket inside, blocked a shot, had two steals, hit some free throws (missed some too!), and had two assists. I'm happy with what I saw early on from him and it gives me hope. He did mishandle two fast breaks later in the game so is definitely rusty.

Amare looked OK tonight vs the Spurs. (nice slam and some power ball under the hoop) Foul trouble did him in but the Suns took the Spurs to OT in San Antonio. Not bad, but it's just another loss and Dallas is up next tomorrow. Nice Back to Back.

How's everyone doing so far with their predicions?

I was right with Chicago being the most improved team although they're playing Miami in the first round instead of the Eastern Finals. They do have a good shot to move on in the playoffs. Tyrus Thomas is going ok but won't be rookie of the year. Same with Skiles.

No you weren't, they won 8 more games than a year ago. Utah won 10 more, Toronto won 20 more, Portland won 11 more, New York won 10 more, Houston won 18 more, Golden State won 8 more. You're right that it wasn't a bad pick, but they're not the most improved.

This is tough to evaluate. Obviously my faith in the Nets was misplaced. San Antonio looks like a perfectly reasonable finals pick. Washington was playing well (although not significantly above expectations) until it was murdered by injuries. Utah improved and outperformed expectations, as did Houston.

Miami is tough to evaluate because they got riddled with so many injuries, but frailty is part of the reason I put them as overrated. I guess if the defending champions win only 44 games and get bounced in the first round, that counts as underperforming. So if Chicago wins, I'll take credit for that.

Phoenix has not underperformed-- I was expecting 50-54 wins. Everyone was saying "title or bust" this year, though, so if they get knocked out by the Spurs in round 2 with Amare, that probably counts as underachieving given that they made the WCF without him last year.

LeBron as East MVP is at least reasonable. It would have been Dwyane Wade if he had been healthy all year. Chris Bosh deserves a mention as well. Gilbert would have had a shot if he had stayed healthy, too.

Duncan as West MVP makes sense to me, too. In my eyes, he's definitely at least 3rd, behind Dirk and Nash, and I'm not yet sure whether he belongs in front of either of them. There is at least an argument that he does-- while he doesn't contribute as much in terms of scoring and creating scores as the other two, he still is an enormously valuable offensive player, he does great work on the boards, and his defensive contributions are worlds beyond what Dirk or Nash can give. I think it'd be totally reasonable to vote him MVP this year.

Toronto lost their first playoff game as did Utah. Portland and New York aren't in the playoffs.

The case that Toronto is the most improved is valid though if most improved strictly goes by number of games won in the regular season.

How else are you supposed to judge 'most improved'?

Toronto had a horrible start and got hit with key injuries throughout the season. Sam Mitchell entered the season as a 'lame duck'... most predicted that he would be out of a job by the all star break.

They won their division.
They improved by 20 games.
Sam Mitchell = Coach of the year.

Chicago was a pretty good team last year. They were the 7th seed in the playoffs. They got a little bit better this year jumping to 5th.

Toronto were fucking awful last year finishing 12th...14 games out of the playoffs. This year they catapulted themselves into the number 3 playoff position.

Chris Bosh deserves a mention as well.

I'm a huge Bosh fan but I don't think he's anywhere near as important to the team as Lebron and Arenas are to theirs. Toronto plays a very team oriented game. they were successful even when Bosh, Ford and Garbajosa went down.

My vote would go to Arenas.
