Need movie suggestions

Post by Neziroth »

So, American Beauty is probably my favorite movie ever made. It's style, the story, the characters, the way it was shot, I can't fault it at all.

Knowing this information, can anyone suggest a similarly well made movie?

A couple of other movies that I think are absolutely amazing:

Fight Club,
Requiem for a Dream,
Garden State

Bring 'em on!

If you like the suburban drama movies, I recommend The Ice Storm. It's directed by Ang Lee, and has an all-star cast with Kevin Kline, Christina Ricci, Tobey Maguire, Sigourney Weaver, and more.

If families that appear normal but are really fucked up is your thing, then Imaginary Heroes (2004) is worth checking out:

It's pretty fucking hit or miss, but if you can sit through a 3 hour movie, I'd suggest Magnolia.

I'm not a big Michael Mann fan but Collateral was very good. Try to ignore the masturbatory directorial flourishes and enjoy the top-notch acting.

I agree with most of the suggestions above (many which I own on DVD), especially the Ice Storm. I'd also suggest Gosford Park, Short Cuts, Secretary, and The Anniversary Party.

V for Vendetta was stylish.

Possibly a totally different type of movie, but Running Scared really impressed me. I wasn't expecting much out of Paul Walker.

Seconded Magnolia if you can get thru it. It's long but it's worth it in my opinion.

eh, I didn't quite get the Secretary. I'm not sure if I was really watching it that closely though.

Running Scared did surprise the hell out of me. I, as well as everyone else, expected it to be shit because of Walker. But I heeded everyones word here and watched it and didn't see any of it coming.

See that ^^. Every single person I've recommended it to has said it's now one of their favorite movies ever. Hilarious, yet involves serious issues and has amazingly colorful characters. Yep, I've recommended it to this forum before, and I will recommended again and again. Absolutely brilliant. Go Nords.

I'll be watching it tonight I'm sure. Every Aaron Eckhart film I've seen I've loved even though they typically disturb the crap out of me at some point. :)

That reminds me, Your Friends and Neighbors is a recommendation, as is In the Company of Men.

And I just thought of another couple indie films I really liked:

Roger Dodger
and

In the Company of Men is an amazing movie. It takes a lot to seriously disturb me in a movie and that one made me naseous. I could hardly keep myself from turning it off.

I agree Aaron Eckhart is fucking awesome and seriously underrated. And Thank You For Smoking is great.

If you want to see a seriously sick and twisted fucking movie, then watch Gummo. That movie will turn your stomach in disgust. Apparently Blockbuster won't even carry it, and I'm not sure if its on netflix at all.

Gummo was only average. Harmony Korine's movies always come off as incredibly forced and phony to me; like he thinks he is in the know about how people behave when in reality he is either completely way off or his characters behavie in a completely typical fashion. He is a master of pointing out the obvious in a way that is supposed to look mysterious or edgy. He should probably just stop making movies entirely and just admire himself in the mirror or something.

Kids was probably the most disturbing I've seen, but I bet Irreversible is worse. I just can't bring myself to watch it.

Irreversible is great although graphic

the newest Oliver Twist by Polanski is very well made, instant classic

can't go wrong with Shawshank Redemption

and if you have time and don't mind a bit of singing in movies Norman Jewison's Fiddler on the roof is a movie everyone should see at least once in a lifetime
