This is bizzare

Post by miir »

So an american citizen, working as a teacher at an american seminary is convicted of sexual abuse in an american court. The guy was caught in his car in the parking lot of an american mall with a 15 year old american girl.

So instead of sending this guy to an american jail, they gave him the option of 3 years probation while staying in canada (except for probation hearings) with his wife and kids.

Hold on a second....the guy got convicted of NOT having sex with a minor?
Clark said Watson and the girl appeared to have struck up a relationship that involved personal e-mails and spending time alone together, both on and off school property. School authorities deemed it inappropriate, but the relationship continued, he said.

Initial media reports from the U.S. that said Watson was convicted of having sex with the girl were incorrect, Clark added.

"He was never charged with intercourse. He never pleaded to intercourse. He never admitted to intercourse and she never claimed intercourse."

Throughout the relationship, Watson had been living with his family in the border city of Fort Erie, Ont., and commuting to his job in Buffalo. He had no prior criminal record and the court felt leniency seemed fair under the circumstances, Clark said.

American authorities can do little to monitor Watson in Canada, but his offence was a misdemeanour in the U.S. and carries few restrictions, Clark conceded.
The guy is a legal immigrant and commited no felony.....why is it exactly that the sentence is so unusual when he was given probation?

The guy is a legal immigrant
He is a legal immigrant in Canada.

The crimes (sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child) were committed by an american, on another american in america.

What fucking sense does it make to allow a criminal to serve their sentence in another country.

What's even moe bizzare is that this american who has been convicted of crimes in america will not be allowed back in america, except for probation hearings.

He was charged and convicted of sexual abuse.... which is what I said.
I didn't say statutory rape or sexual assault.
Guess you better work on that reading comprehension thing.

The guy is a legal immigrant and commited no felony.....why is it exactly that the sentence is so unusual when he was given probation?
Again with the reading comprehension.
He's an american citizien who lives in canada. Not a canadian immigrant who was arrested and convicted of sexual abuse in the US.

Nobody said anything about a felony.... but what he was convicted of is bad enough that you guys won't even let one of your citizens back into their own country.
So he's so bad that he's not allowed back into his own country but it's OK for him to be shipped off to canada to serve out his probaiton?

The crimes he was convicted of carry a maximum sentence of roughly one and a half years in american jail.

But probation is not the issue. Hell, if he wasn't such an idiot, he would have molestered the girl in the parking lot of a Canadian mall... he wouldn't even have been charged. The age of consent in canada is 14.

The issue is that an american court is sending an american citizen who has been convicted as an american criminal in an american court to another fucking country to serve his probaiton.

I guess maybe I don't really understand the case, but I think you're blowing it out of proportion. It's not "serving a sentence", it's probation. Which means, at least here, "keep your nose clean" for X number of months/years and you don't have to go to jail. Violate it and you're in a lot more trouble than you were initially in.

He lived in Canada, in a border city, and worked across the border. He has no previous record. He didn't have sex with the girl, and the girl was 15 and his student. While whatever he was doing with the girl was inappropriate, it doesn't sound like he is a habitual predator, and it also sounds like he may have had the girl's consent. If keeping him in Canada keeps him away from the girl that he should stay away from, I don't see why it's such a big deal.

It's not like he was an American, living in America, committing a crime in America, sentenced by an American judge to exile in Canada. It was a guy who lived in Canada, who is basically a Canadian, requesting to continue living with his family in Canada, and the judge agreed that that was okay.

If your government chooses not to allow that, that's a totally different story. But from just the top article linked on Google News, I don't really see what the judge did that was wrong.

Actually, I think he probably could have gotten in a lot more trouble if he'd transported her across the border... But I know what you're saying!

Typical american hypocrisy and double standards.

What do you think would happen if a convicted canadian sex offender tried to cross the border into the states?

I guess maybe I don't know what the term "landed immigrant" means. It appears to me that he's about as close to a Canadian citizen as he can be, his family lives there, and he lived there when he committed the crime.

I think you're also throwing out the "typical american hypocrisy" tag a little too quickly, or maybe you didn't see who you were responding to. Please find me once where I've ever made a "go joe" pro-America post, or anything even remotely anti-Canadian. My grandfather is Canadian, a couple of my uncles have or had dual citizenship, and several of my cousins and their families still live in Canada. I'm about as pro-Canada as you can be without actually living there.

I live close enough to Canada where this same situation could be reversed, and I don't think I would feel any differently if it were. Hell, I know at least two people who work for my company that are Canadian and have lived both in Windsor and over here during their tenure. If one of them were living with their family here, and had been steaming the windows up, "not having intercourse" with a willing 15 year-old over there, I don't think I'd lose any sleep over it if the Canadian judge said that they could continue to live with their family in America.

Maybe that's just me.

His being a "landed immigrant" essentially means he has the Canadian equivalent to a Green Card. Now what this conviction might mean to that status, as he is still an American citizen is something that may be examined.

Where the double standard part comes into play, I think, is that if a Canadian citizen committed equivalent crimes in Canada, they would never be allowed to cross the border. I know people who have applied and been granted pardons by the Canadian gov't and old convictions stricken that were refused admittance to the US until they in essence went through the pardoning procedure again with US consular/immigration officials. I don't argue with the fact that the US has the right to close their borders to anyone they deem undesirable but the way this story was reported in the media up here, was that the judge was exiling the guy to Canada instead of a jail sentence.

I saw some comments on the news (CTV) about this last night where a US immigration official said words to the effect of "he was offered that option but if the Canadian gov't won't accept him, we have to take him back".

I made that comment because you obviously didn't stop to think what would happen if the countries were reversed... and neither did the judge who did the sentencing.

Last time I checked Canadia didn't have much of a military. As I recall from a previous thread on this board, the "officers" that patrol their borders aren't even armed. I have been to that shit hole a half dozen times or so and I haven't found anything worthwhile any of the times I was there, so I poke fun at it. How about you get all bent out of shape and start crying about it.

OMG Canadia!
Canadia is currently undertaking a massive project in their armed forces division. They have bred over 2 million beavers with lasers embedded in their tails. It has been long know that the Canadians are at one with the beaver and the two have been allies since the country was established but this latest movement could mean doom for the world, DOOM!
Canadia is the second-largest country on Earth in terms of land-area. But since only about .01 percent of that land-area is inhabited (the rest being too damn cold fourteen months out of the year), this honor really doesn't amount to much. Plus, this benefit of a large landmass means little for defensive purposes. However, uneasy and intimidated Canadians somtimes use the phrase: "Our country is bigger than the US" believing that this somehow means they are more powerful. But some Canadans just say this in attempt to salvage their pathetic Canadian dignity even though they know full-well that if the US desired to, US military forces would quite easily invade and conquer Canada in a short amount of time (starting shortly after breakfast and claiming victory sometime before lunch). Unless they release the beavers, in which case the US is fucked.

So let me get this straight, you make a statement absolutely no one would ever laugh at in a pathetic attempt to flex your non existant strength and when you get called out for being such a joke you mock someone's appreciation for one of the best bands around? (a belief held by many here no less)

Wow thats a compelling arguement dickhead. If only we could all learn to be an intellectual virtuoso like yourself this world would be so much better. We could attack all our closest neighbours and allies, listen to shit music and pretend we know what we're talking about, whilst looking like cross eyed inbred yokels. Eureka!

I'll use this last sentence to "dickride" Maynard and remind you to learn to swim, jackass.

There is a difference between appreciating and being obsessed, and you are past that point by a long shot dude, sorry to take you down a notch.

It never gets boring for you to slam on people because they don't share your same set of unrealistic, liberal, bullshit beliefs does it?

I guess if I was living in one of the most pathetic countries in the world in a time where people are quick to bomb you for no reason other then a cartoon drawing I would be almost as much of a whiney bitch as you.

Oh, and if you really want to insult me how about you try to say something other than the same recycled bullshit you and all the other morons here spew every time I say something that isn't 100% in line with your ridiculous sets of beliefs.

See that is the attitude that annoys me about you and many other people. You seriously get off on running your overpowered and undereducated mouth . If I was being extreme in line with your beliefs you wouldn't say a damn word, but in the adverse situation you make it out to be something about me individually. You are MORE narrow minded and retarded then the people you run your mouth to constantly. And KNOWING (nothing to do with opinion) that you and many of the other loud mouths here are retarded is what has enabled me to not get so bent out of shape when you spout your absolutely worthless opinions out.

Ahahaha, Funk the young conservative gangsta rapper! Ooh, maybe he'll claim to be a moderate like Kylere? Funk the moderate gangsta rapper that will spit in your face over a parking space in the hope you will "start something" and give him an excuse to cap your ass.
