FFA confirmed it was a helicopter around 3pm into the bellair apartments
edit: nevermind, now they are saying fixed wing aircraft, im going to work, someone else update

i dont know about you guys but i feel a terror alert meter push

it was just a helicopter or a small plane and hit the 20th floor of a 50 story building (apartment building i think?). hazy/overcast weather. very likely to be an accident

I admittedly don't know New York well enough to be an expert on this, but from the pictures I simply have to ask.. why the fuck was a pilot in training anywhere near skyscrapers? Is the airport that close to the city itself?

Tetaboro is about 10-15 miles away...they were sightseeing past the statue of liberty and empire state building....

From what has been said they had fuel problems..although of course its all speculation

How often do average (read: non-famous) recreational pilots crash and get killed? It seems like I only hear about like 1 or 2 a year, yet just off the top of my head I can think of John Denver, JFK Jr., Corey Lidle... are the famous people doing something wrong, or does this happen all the time and you just don't hear about it unless they're famous?

Crashes happen more than you think.

I once heard the most common cause of accidental death for doctors age 50-60 was plane/helicoptor crashes. However I do not have anything to back that up!

Anyway, after a quick search, although the statistics are slightly dated:

Every year, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB; Washington, DC) records approximately 2,000 general aviation crashes, with an average of 765 fatalities.

You don't hear about it unless they're famous...or local.

Heck, earlier this week a woman fell out of an ultra-light near here and the prop sliced her. She lived though!

Especially in July when the big EAA conference takes place in Oshkosh WI. It seems you hear about all these folks who were flying to or from the event crashing and dying.

Wow, that's a lot higher than I would have guessed. I'm pretty terrified of flying, and I always assumed that if I flew with one of the people I know who have their licenses that it would help me conquer that fear. Fuck that! I'll just stick to Xanax and/or Scotch when I have to fly commercially.

Fuck that. My dad owned a small plane when I was a kid and was always asking us if we wanted to go up in it which I did a few times a month. I was always uncomfortable in that thing.

I remember one time in Hawaii while island hopping, the plane my dad rented had a radio failure so besides bouncing around in the little plane with all the turbulence, we had to fly by the tower in Maui waving our wings to let them know something was up as we landed without air traffic communication.

Flying around in a little plane won't help you conquer your flying fears! It may reduce your tension on a passenger jet knowing how much worse it can be though in a small plane. : )

I have shitloads of time spent in planes traveling back and forth to Europe so many times and other locations and still don't feel comfortable in them.

If you want to really freak out, fly on Air Italia. Their crusty old planes will put a scare into you for sure. They also have a plane boarding "system" that is basically a mad rush to the plane, much worse than Southwest.

As a passenger, flying sucks.

I started private pilot training several years ago.

It only took me a few hours to realize that it isnt for me. Flying a light plane safely requires you to maintain extreme levels of concentration on everything going on around you both inside the plane and out.

I'm ok with that for short periods, but I'm way too ADD'ish to focus that hard for that long.

It was one of those gut feelings I got one day when I was taxi'ing out with my instructor and he was going over all of the things I need to pay attention to. The 'little voice' told me that this was not for me.

Even if it wasn't so damn much work, it certainly didn't seem like something that would be very enjoyable.

I hate flying, always have. For one thing, ear pressure is a massive issue w/ me, especially on descent. Another, I hate not being able to see out of the front, purely a personal control, or lack thereof, issue.

I occasionally fly Continental, but now it's mostly Jet Blue because of the average fleet age issue. There's nothing better than the feeling of sitting down in a plane that still has ashtrays and window curtains.
