Public schools are suffering the fate of most government programs: they're trying to please too many people too much of the time.
Too much money is tied up in ESE students who are so retarded that they will NEVER be able to take care of themselves, much less contribute to society, yet they're in school until they're 22. These types fo kids require 3-4 times the manpower as regular kids do. There is almost no extra funding provided, so regular programs take the hit.
Down here, we have 3 different programs for kids who are disruptive little shits. Instead of beating them into submission like they did in the 50's, or even just throwing them out, they coddle the little pricks, and yet 50% of them STILL end up in jail within 2 years of "graduation." I'll give you one guess where funding for these programs comes from.
If you have children, do not send them to public school if you can at all avoid it, or are in one of the increasingly rare areas where theire schools aren't a complete disaster.
Do not be fooled by shiny new facilities. School districts rot from the inside.

I went to public school, my wife went to public school, my Dad was a public school psychologist (and former public school Jr. High teacher) 37 years combined total and my mom and public elementary school teacher for 34 years.
I do not believe in vouchers.
However right now my son goes to a Catholic Pre-School as will my youngest next year and probably the next one as well (due in March) and they will all probably go to there at least through Elementary and maybe through High School... and no I'm not Catholic. (I'm Presbyterian).
Our town also has pretty good public schools, especially for Arkansas, but even my Baptist Public School teaching mom is very happy about where he is going. Interestingly enough they are much more liberal than the fundie school here which is the only other private choice. When my friend got fired from there for mentioning "evolution" and then I found out they had guest speakers from Bob Jones University I knew that my kids would not be going there, regardless.
I'm all for public education, the Catholic school doesn't have football so if he wants to play he will have to switch once he gets to Jr. High but they do have Basketball, 10Gbps Ethernet, Wireless and Smart Boards in every room now... and all 10-12th graders are required to have laptops, doubt he will have those opportunities in Public School, even 10 years from now but who knows...
