What games do you play when at a Lan Party?
For us we usually do:

Quake 3
Unreal Tournament 2004
Battlefiled 1942/Vietnam/2
We always try to get in a couple games of Starcraft, Warcraft, and Warcraft 3. Starcraft has a particular history amoung my group of friends because at a time, even though we were literally all over the world, we continued to play SC at least 3-4 nights a week as a group. I also made, what myself and my friends consider, the greatest 2 vs 2 map in SC history, called Seige. We always try to play that map at any LAN party.

You should save up your energy for Saturday. MSU might beat Notre Dame and then you'll have lots of couches and cars and whatnot to burninate.Leonaerd wrote:Well, it's Thursday and I'm sober and I go to MSU, I'd better go tap a keg.
I've never been to a lan party.

If anyone ever played Total Annihilation, there's a new open source project to bring it back:

I've played it a few timeson a LAN and over ze intarnet. It's pretty stable with the exception of playing with AI's. I haven't crashed with an all player game, but any time somebody loads an AI it'll crash eventually.

Only game I ever played at a LAN party was back in the days of the original Marathon for the macintosh (Long before the sequels and the open source port projects). Greatest time I ever had playing a multiplayer game. I've been to parties where we had multiple computers hooked up (10 or more) but it was usually to play everquest with the occasional Unreal Tournament match.
Oh, and your poet Eliot had it all wrong:

In the era of wireless LANs and laptops powerful enough to power a space shuttle, LAN parties are much easier to host than they used to be. It's usually more a question of if you have enough space for all those people and PCs. Every LAN party I've ever attended has been at my house, and I have plenty of room. The most we've had is a solid 10 or so, but I would consider anything 4+ as on "official" party (for 2v2 or 4vComp games).
My friends and I have one maybe twice a year.

the game itself from the box sucks i agreeBoogahz wrote:I don't think I played Operation Flashpoint past the first week or two I had it :/
the mods that are out for it though, holy hell, islands which is the mod that a certain wizard / warrior you might remember picked and campaigned for to have us try at his lan party was just awesome.
imagine battlefield 1942, imagine the map 10 times bigger, imagine a bunch of towns on the map (i'd say about 30), flag in each town.
each person starts with x amount of money
the commander starts with a bit more
commander controls the mobile HQ vehicle and with it can buy buildings (think command and conquer)
the other players can then buy from those buildings, vehicles, men for their squadron which will be under his command till they die, you can have 8 men in your squad. and the mod had room for 8 players so your side can have up to 64 men. + vehicles.
commander then upgrades the structures to let you buy better equipment etc, you can buy stuff like
-jeep
-hummer and variations of it
-apc
-tanks
-helecopters
-planes
equipment variations feel like what you'd get in Rainbow 6, basically you can choose from a big ass load of options, sniper rifles, rpg, stingers, saw's etc etc.
you gain money by taking towns, an initial bonus when u take the town, and then a rolling income as long as you remain in control.
this unlike battlefield though, requires co-op, there is no rambo factor here, you can't run into a town alone in a tank, you get creamed. the computer AI is awesome.
the computer builds up it's army and attacks in force strategically too, you wont get small crowds running with bb guns and then they keep all the tanks stationary to defend or some shit, if you have the comp. on co-op (they all work together instead of each town to it's own) and have the difficulty on medium or higher, then prepared to get owned until you work with your other players as a team.
the mod is simply awesome.
