I went to Canucks.com to get the low-down. I figure Canadians know their hockey if nothing else!

What say you Sparty!?

Are the pictures at the bottom of that page doctored or does NHL 07 look that much better than 2K7?

To be clear, while the studio I'm at did make NHL2k7, I'm strictly working on the MLB game. I can't wait for y'all to see the character work I did on MLB. Unfortunately, it'll be quite a while before I can show that off.

Anyway, after checking out that link, EA's NHL definitely does look better graphically. I especially like the character and cloth work. But, if Ive learned anything from being in the industry, its to never trust a screenshot and certainly never judge a game by a screenshot. Ive never been an NHL fan so I can guarantee you that you could put just about any NHL in front of me and I'll like it. NHL2k7 definitely fits that bill. Hockey games are just fun to play. It will be interesting what conclusion the die hard hockey fans come to after both games are released.

Just a side note for Winnow. 360>PS3

I haven't played it yet but it's listed as NHL07 shootout Demo.

I'm guessing it's penalty shots and nothing else. =/

Gotta take what you get I guess.

8.9 is the highest review for a 360 sports game to date on IGN. A lot of smiling faces around the office today =)

NHL07 for an 8.7 from IGN. Both scores are more than respectable. Looks like it's the year of the hockey game.

Were it not for the retarded markup for the 360 versions of both games (EBGames is charging 19.99 for the PS2 version and 59.99 for the 360 versions of NHL 2k7???????), I'd consider buying one of the two.

I tried the demo of 2k7 and it's also seems to be a very very decent game in it's own right.
Normal play, 10 minutes
The 2k7 demo was leaps and bounds more fun than the 07 demo.

Agree with Animal on the NHL2K7 demo on Live. Was really impressed. I've played a bunch of the EA versions of NHL series, but this Demo even seemed more polished over instead of blaring annoying announcers talking in your ear. It was a nice change of pace from hearing about every pass and shot from the announcers making comments on every single thing you do.

The atmosphere and tone of the game makes it feel like it's important to win the game. Music was very well done. I guess the sound is designed to be more focused on down on ice level, because you can actually clearly understand the coach while he talks to the team, over not hearing him over the crowd noise.

I played the 07 demo, and it seems like the complaints that you are making lead to one thing: you would rather the game is not realistic.

The graphics in 07 are so much better it's not even fair, the gameplay is more realistic and more of a challenge with the right analog stick being your "stick", and the loud obnoxious announcers and crowd are part of making it feel real.. thats how it really is.

I don't know, maybe im off on something.

To be fair though, the EA demo is probably not very representative of the game.

What they tried to accomplish here is show off the new stick handling system(which I really enjoy btw) but put out a demo that can't really be used to judge how the game plays.

The 2k demo thrust you straight into the meat of the game without trying to really wow you with overly pretty or new features.

Personally, I appreciate the honesty in the latter a lot more.

Granted, I haven't downloaded NHL07 demo yet so I have no idea what the new game holds. Just basing my initial impression on the previous series.

I guess if you think about it, I wouldn't call it a difference between whether or not you like the game to be realistic.

I would argue that both are realistic. Those who watch hockey a ton on TV probably are used to hearing those cheesy announcers may like 07, or those who actually want to feel what it's like to play as a player as he's there in the arena may like 2K7.

When I'm at a game, I never hear the announcers so that's how I see hockey usually. I do wish 2K had increased the crowd noise to the loudness of an arena, I think that's a fair complaint about the 2K series so I'm not biased :)

The article above on 2K7 really said it best about it being a cinematic movie version of hockey instead of a TV version hockey game. The 2K7 announcers can be turned on as well so if you're into that aspect of hockey you can get that as well.

EA again stripped down their game by not having online leagues, create a team/fantasy draft other games have in the past. Thats another an advantage the 2K series has.

If I'm going to spend $60, I want the best game with the important features included that I like. It may not look the greatest, but I rather sacrifice graphics for quantity of the game.

Sweet : ) I'll check it out!

I played around with NHL2K7 tonight and it didn't take long for me to remember why EA blows so bad compared to 2K. EA sucks at presentation while 2K rocks at it. I watched a simulated hockey game in 2K7 and the announcers were incredible. Felt exactly like a hockey game should be if watched on TV. The announcers voices were smooth and never stopped yammering about the play by play and color commentary...amazinging good.

I recommend choosing the option to play the game with commentary as opposed to just music or whatever the other option is in 2K7.

Also, those side games in the bar are great. I love shuffleboard and air hockey : )

I cant play for shit but all of the little mini hickey games you can looked like fun too and would keep the game interesting over a long period of time.

Again, I suck at sports games and haven't tried to figure out 2K7 but the little fumbling around I did gave me the impression that the gameplay handles very well.

The only thing lacking is the cut scenes, I haven't looked, but I'll bet EA NHL 07 has 2K7 beat on the rendered scenes although that's not a big deal in the long run.

After playing a couple EA sports games, it was refreshing to see the great UI in the 2K game as well...stats, menus, etc all better with 2K.

Not a day goes by were im not asking the art director if I could do a team of Orc's. Then again, I worked on Randy Johnson the other day, and he's more scary looking then any Orc.

I'll see what the higher ups have to say about you mutant league baseball idea =)

Well, the gameplay has been improved. Defensemen play a bigger role on offense now and thats a good thing. Skating seems to more realistic and players will drive to the net and make an attempt to score.

This whole game however is just a copy/paste from the previous one. Same intros, same commentaries (I heard the same thing in NHL 06 on how much play time Kovalev used to do). THe only thing they added was advertisement, Thats right, the 3 stars selection is brought to you by Dodge...blah blah blah go get a Dodge.

EA loses out on my money again.
