Oh yeah, Snakes on a Plane.
I sat there for like 2 minutes going "uhh... what do those letters stand for?"
In my defense it was 3:45am.
I'll definitely see this movie at some point, I kind of want to watch it in the theater if only to support its brilliant marketing.

Apparently it's not doing super fantastic in theaters. In a way, I'm dissappointed because it never took itself seriously at all, which was fun. However, I'm kinda glad it isn't doing spectacular because I don't think mediocrity needs to be celebrated and rewarded. It would just breed more of the same stupid types of films. One every few years is great, but what if this spiraled into an entire summer line of of stupid conceptual garbage that just got worse and worse? That would defeat the whole purpose of films like this.Whilst Hollywood's 'tracking' figures have been off much of this Summer, their predictions of a soft opening for the much hyped "Snakes on a Plane" proved more correct than even they surmised. The Sam Jackson starrer generated just $13.9 million at the box-office this weekend, coming in second behind a three week old Will Ferrell comedy.
Maybe it was the hype which bloomed too early, maybe it was the late August opening which guarantees a weak start, and maybe the recent terror scare and Draconian security measures that came along with it turned people off movies involving planes. Whatever the case, the finger pointing and attempts at justification will now begin in blogs and editorials everywhere.
After all, for your average $30 million action thriller it's a disappointing opening. For one so talked about though, it's a crushing blow. The online hype was far more intense than most films of this calibre, and the actual concept has become a part of the cultural vernacular, yet traditional forms of the film's publicity (posters, trailers) were all low-key and disappointing which probably contributed a lot. Expect the film to quickly vanish from theatres but earn a nice dividend for New Line in the video/DVD market.

Summer Blockbusters for this year are done.. why not have a bunch of shit just flood the theater anyway?Fairweather Pure wrote:Apparently it's not doing super fantastic in theaters. From what I've heard, the numbers being quoted for this movie included Thursday night playings as well - while other movies only include Fri-Sun for "weekend" numbers. Which basically means it's doing worse than reported. Which of course, is no surprise.Fairweather Pure wrote:Apparently it's not doing super fantastic in theaters.

...but did anyone honestly expect this movie to put up any really big numbers on it's opening weekend?Siji wrote:From what I've heard, the numbers being quoted for this movie included Thursday night playings as well - while other movies only include Fri-Sun for "weekend" numbers. CAIRO, Egypt (AP) -- Customs officers at Cairo's airport have detained a man bound for Saudi Arabia who was trying to smuggle 700 live snakes on a plane, airport authorities said.
The officers were stunned when a passenger, identified as Yahia Rahim Tulba, told them his carryon bag contained live snakes after he was asked to open it.
Tulba opened his bag to show the snakes to the police and asked the officers, who held a safe distance, not to come close. Among the various snakes, hidden in small cloth sacks, were two poisonous cobras, authorities said.
The Egyptian said he had hoped to sell the snakes in Saudi Arabia. Police confiscated the snakes and turned Tulba over to the prosecutor's office, accusing him of violating export laws and endangering the lives of other passengers.
According to the customs officials, Tulba claimed the snakes are wanted by Saudis who display them in glass jars in shops, keep them as pets or sell them to research centers.
The value of the snakes was not immediately known.
