Sony Mylo, Pointless Tech?

Post by Animalor »

http://www.learningcenter.sony.us/asset ... index.html

the Mylo is being lauded as an internet communicator device a defice with a full querty keyboard and a smallish 2.4" screen, it's primary function is that people can use IM, Skype and browse the internet (imbedded Opera Broswer) while on the go.

The thing also plays MP3's and Video.

The main drawback to this is that it only uses WIFI, not cell networks, so essentially, when you're out of wifi range, all you have is a hacked up PSP with a keyboard.

Is there anyone that IM's that much that they require to be online even when they're on the go?

Anyways, enough of the rant. Here's the thing in action, courtesy of Gizmondo.

Perfect for people who live in large urban centres.

That's what I was thinging. The main target is the college crowd. Colleges are usually wi-fi intensive as well as cities with city-wide wi-fi projects.(Toronto is working on this aren't they?)

I havta admin that it's a pretty little device, the features just aren't something I would use on a regular basis.

It sounds too Sonycontemporaryrandom to catch on. Though I assume many will buy it simply because it only uses wifi.

Wi-Fi is coming bigtime, at least here in Europe. Quite a few cell phones now have wi-fi ability built in. If you have wi-fi access it calls on that, if not it calls on cell connection. I predict Sony is ahead of the curve here actually.

The specs on the Mylo site doesn't say cell networks on it though, only WiFi. those may be incomplete though.

I know I was just using it as an example of how wi-fi is already being used bigtime. And it will be more and more.

Sony's usually ahead though, and that mentality -always- either leads to their flopping failure or mega-success on a product.
