Welcome to America, Macaca!

RICHMOND, Aug. 14 -- Virginia Sen. George Allen (R) apologized Monday for what his opponent's campaign said were demeaning and insensitive comments the senator made to a 20-year-old volunteer of Indian descent.

At a campaign rally in southwest Virginia on Friday, Allen repeatedly called a volunteer for Democrat James Webb "macaca." During the speech in Breaks, near the Kentucky border, Allen began by saying that he was "going to run this campaign on positive, constructive ideas" and then pointed at S.R. Sidarth in the crowd.

"This fellow here, over here with the yellow shirt, macaca, or whatever his name is. He's with my opponent. He's following us around everywhere. And it's just great," Allen said, as his supporters began to laugh. After saying that Webb was raising money in California with a "bunch of Hollywood movie moguls," Allen said, "Let's give a welcome to macaca, here. Welcome to America and the real world of Virginia." Allen then began talking about the "war on terror."

Depending on how it is spelled, the word macaca could mean either a monkey that inhabits the Eastern Hemisphere or a town in South Africa. In some European cultures, macaca is also considered a racial slur against African immigrants, according to several Web sites that track ethnic slurs.

It's like these guys live in a whole other world.

I'm sure in his bus later his campaign manager was reminding him that he can't openly use racial slurs in front of cameras and people, and he's smacking his forehead going 'DAMMIT, FORGOT!'

This is meaningless. Democrats in general need to learn to have thick skin. Taking offense to such nonsense is exactly what makes the republican propaganda machine so potent.
I tell it like a true mackadelic.

Even if Allen had no idea WTF macaca actually meant and pulled it out of his ass because he thought it sounded like an appropriate ethnic name for this Indian guy, it was an incredibly stupid thing to do which this guy definately deserves to get called out on. It's like going around calling a random black dude Jermaine, some central Asian Habib, or some native American Tanto.

That would mean that he had heard the term, or something like it, before. I have never heard it used in any way. It sounds more like
Spanish than anything Indian. And if he wanted to go around calling someone his turd, then I could see the problem.

Actually, the guy most likely did hear the word before. The macaca monkey is native to Tunisia and is a common slur in Tunisia to describe dark skinned people. Allen's mother happens to be Tunisian.

Tunisia wasn't specifically mentioned in the article. Another person on another MB (where I first saw this article) referenced his mother's Tunisian background.

And that makes it true!

Sorry, but I think it's a bit of a stretch.

Well it makes it more logical and plausible if that is factual. But I know fuck all about what Tunisians call their Monkeys. Though they do have Macacs which gives it a bit of face validity.

Clearly the guy intended to harass the fellow which is all well and good (ribbing the opposition etc.). But Mucaca aside, the "Welcome to America" is a pretty clear xenophobic/rascist slam...So the intent of the other bit is moot really.

I was just curious about the Tunisia bit :)...

On Monday, Allen spokesman Dick Wadhams said the name "Macaca" was a variation of "Mohawk," the nickname Allen campaign staffers gave Sidarth for his partially cropped haircut. Allen, however, said Tuesday that he made up the name himself.

Allen has been accused of racial insensitivity before. He wore a Confederate flag pin in his high school yearbook photo, used to keep a Confederate flag in his living room, a noose in his law office and a picture of Confederate troops in his governor's office, but has said he has grown since then.
Yes, he meant Mohawk! No wait, Maggie! No wait, Macarnea! Yeah, this guy doesn't have a racist bone in his body.

Google is your friend. Take the 2 seconds to cross check George Allen's mother and common Tunisian racial slurs and it's layed out all nicely and neatly for you.

Well, that's a little more convincing than "I read it on a message board"...

My family background is German and Scot-Irish. Do I know all of the common racial slurs for both? No.

Just because I said that someone else said so doesn't necessarily imply that I took it on their word. I'm not Cartalas, Metanis, or anyone else from the retard brigade who laps up shit so long as it comes from a source they agree with. Of course I checked to see if there was a valid connection.

I said what I said because I was being intellectually honest about not having made the connection on my own. The fact that I didn't spell out my having done a followup check was a mistaken assumption on my part in assuming that most people implicitly understand that this is the next logical step and that it goes without saying.

Unfortunately too many people believe every word they read on teh intarweb. I remember a professor talking about how and of us could set up a website and claim to be "experts" on his subject with better credentials than he had, and how much he felt for the poor people that would know no better when they ran across our pretty "informative" websites while writing their own papers. This was in his opening lecture regarding citing valid sources.
