O Canada!

Hello!
I'm leaving on saturday for a 2 week roadtrip across the north and will be in canada for about a week or so. I'll be visiting my aunt and uncle in Regina; however, or I would try and locate some of you and buy you drinks!

Anyways, being my first trip to Canadia, I need to know what the good bargains are on exploiting the duty free action! What do you guys get up there for the cheapcheap?

The Canadian dollar seems to be the strongest its been vs the U.S. dollar in like the last thousand years or more...not sure you'll get anything too cheap!

1 USD = 1.12664 CAD

I'm sorry, I thought it was obvious I was speaking of goods that we pay tarriffs on because of our gay 'protectionist' policy. Then again, I know that you actually knew that...you just wanted to find another opportunity to call attention to yourself.

oh goto banff it was really pretty when i went with my mommy a long time ago and there is some green restaurant with one of those /\ roofs in front and they had fucking delicious apple pancakes. i think it's smack in the middle of the main road in the town. (i don't know if this is anywhere near regina)

Well, Regina is sort of out in the middle of buttfuck nowhere as far as Canada goes while still being in the provinces proper and not the territories (aka the real great white north). I have no idea what you can get cheaper up here, but there's stuff you can only get up here. Lots of candy brands you don't get down there, go nuts!

Go in and ask for Smarties. Then be utterly dismayed when they hand you a bunch of fucking M&M rip-offs (in form and function -- the chocolate is actually much better) instead of the sugary rolled goodness of real Smarties.

My Canadian friends (one of them anyway) had often pontificated on the taste of corn-fed beef (Canadian) vs. grain-fed beef (American) but I couldn't tell the difference at all.

Banff is fucking awesome if you can get up there. I stayed in the Banff Springs hotel and it was elegant, 5 stars and had great rooms/service/food.

Unfortunately the anti-Canadian sect on this board has fucked it up for the rest of us. I love Canada, but I'd also love to tease Dregor that everywhere of Canada is in the middle of buttfuck nowhere (that's kind of the magic eh?).

Just say 'No'...

First of all... Don't make me kill you.

The Chocolate Smartii are English, not Canadian. And they're deee-lish. I'm a big fan of the American sugarpill but the yumminess that is the UK Smartie is unparalleled. Other delicious English treats available to you in Canada are Hobnobs, Crunchie bars and Aero bars (quite possibly the Flake bar as well). For a true Canadian delight, try the Coffee Crisp.

Also, try dill pickle and ketchup chips while you're there!

Pixie sticks are strong, but Smarties are more readily available in greater quantities so they > Pixie Sticks.

Edit: Also, pixie sticks can really hurt you if you're not paying attention when you attempt to ingest them.

I had a Mr. Big candy bar one time in canada that was really tasty. I don't speak french but the label said something like "Mon nomme en det Long" (or somesuch) and I figured that translated to "My name is the long" and I really got a kick out of that, I think that's why I bought it. I was in high school at the time (and no, I haven't changed much).

Peameal bacon is delicious, you can only get that in Canada afaik.

I've only ever eaten a Donair in Canada, it was something that I would probably balk at sober but was fanfuckingtastic late-night drunk eating. Kind of like a Gyro, but a little different.

Cuban cigars are legal in Canada, and prostitution is supposedly legal in (at least) Ontario.

Canada has some kind of crazy tax they charge on restaurants (and possibly other establishments... hotels maybe). I've never done it myself, but I heard that if you save your receipts you can send them all in to some office and be reimbursed for that particular tax if you don't live in Canada.

Keep in mind that outside of one trip to Vancouver, most of my Canadian trips have been Ontario eastward. Not sure where all you'll be hitting, or if any of my information will be helpful in those spots, but have fun!

P.S. Smarties are fucking gross. The American kind; I'd rather huff mothballs.

Indeed, Smarties up here are English in origin, like all the Nestle products AFAIK. And yes, Smarties > plain M&Ms by a long shot. much better candy to chocolate ratio! We have American "Smarties" up here, they just aren't called that. We'd get them all the time at Halloween. Those'll get ya feeling sick quick!

Do yourself a favour and try (in this order) a Coffee Crisp (best chocolate bar evar), Smarties, and a mint Aero bar.

And yeah.. I was surprised when I found out you guys didn't have ketchup or pickle chips.

Yeah, I know Regina is in bumfuck...but for this trip anyways, it's that or nothing. I'm going to visit my aunt and uncle before going to a wedding in Bismark, ND (yeah i know, also in bumfuck)

On a brainstorm I figured that any alcohol from canada or possibly the UK would be a somewhat steal, as I'd be dodging the rediculous tariff the US puts on that. Maybe it's time to add to the scotch collection!

Personally I think Saskatchewan and manitoba are the most boring of boring provinces. A whole lot of nothing with a semi major city thrown in each one every now and then. If you're going for a vacation to canada. BC, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia or PEI.

Each province has it's pwn rules for booze and beer. I live about 3 miles from the ontario border and booze up there is double and beer 50% more then here. However at the duty free you may find a deal. One time they had 50 year old Grand Marinier for 29$.

hmmm...now, according to my handy Opera 9.01 (check it out, great browser!) currency exchange widget, a comic costing 2.99 U.S should cost 3.37 in Canada...I hope you fare better with the chocolate treats!

Publishers are still treating their prices like the CND dollar is worth .75 U.S. (which would have been a good deal for Canadians back in 2002 when CND dollar was worth .60 at its lowest) instead of .89 currently. The funny thing about it is that most of the comics are printed in Canada.

Canadians should demand cheaper prices since they print them!

It's a good time for Cannucks to visit the states and buy our high quality products!

Ya know, about all I can think of to tell the Truculous one, is to try and catch a 'Riders game while he's there. The CFL isn't as polished as the NFL by a long shot but its fast and fun.

Really, I don't know what else I would tell to anyone coming up here now: some of our booze is good stuff but the provinces tax it to the point where its almost twice as pricey as it would be down there. Electronics you get an equal/better selection at better prices. Some visitors from the U.K. about 5 years back thought we had good prices on shoes, jeans, etc but thats the UK not the US... and it was 5 years ago before our dollar picked up steam.

And yes, Regina is in the middle of no where but better there than the pretentiousness capital of the world, Toronto
