Apparently word on the street is that E3 will be radically shrunk from it's current gigantic spectacle to more focused demonstrations to select group of attendees in the hundred's rather than the thousands.
The whole basis of this change is apparently so that costs could be significantly be reduced for exhibitors.
More official details should be released today or early this week.
If they can keep the same level of information or improve the quality of the information coming out of E3, I'm all for it. I'm just sad that I never really got to witness the extravaganza first hand.

I enjoy listening to Zencasts of small-time game reviewers (Gaming Steve for example is dorky but gives excellent info) and would hate to be stuck with having to hear about games from those that are bound to swing their opinions to those companies that pay for their advertising in magazines.
Bad idea. Maybe slight downsizing but don't squeeze out the smaller reviewers that give a much better picture of that games and hardware are like.

actually it was an exposition (hence the name), which pretty much by definition is a public event!
I used to go up until 2003 or 2004 with my ex boyfriend who works in the industry. It really wasn't worth going to the last two times though as it was more about the biggest, noisiest display on the show floor. And yeah, all the journalists complained that you could never get anywhere near any of the games because the lineups were choked with thousands of smelly, sweaty neckbeards overladen with 3-4 bags of swag they've been whoring. The problem is the nature of the spectacle of e3 attracts nerds like a homing beacon.
Toning it down will reduce the excitement of the event though. Trade shows are boring; even ones about video games. Look at what happened to CES.

Here is the bottom line, the ESA had turned E3 into a massively expensive endeavor for the industry participants ($1M for your space, etc)

i'm sad that there won't be another e3. i wasn't planning on going next year since i'm getting married but i was still looking forward to the coverage. it will be interesting to see how the game industry changes without e3. or if it doesn't. but without e3, i may never get to play hellgate london again.
