Anyone with just a fleeting interest in modern composition music owes it to him/herself to check out Ligetis work. A true pioneer, a unique composer and a fantastic brain. Stockhausen, eat my shorts.

I'd suggest Aventures and Atmosphérés, as well as Lux Aeterna. Be prepared to go "what the fuck?" the first 10 times you hear it.

I've listened to quite a bit of modern composition and I'm still "what the fuck"ing...

(I'm prepared for a verbal lashing from all three of you)

No, no lashing necessary.

I will say that personally, I was able to appreciate modern comp, and even avant garde jazz for that matter, after I had been well versed in the rules of classical comp (hooray for bach and 4 part harmony laws of the universe ><). I remember the first time I listed to the free jazz I was like wtf? But I gave it another try later on, and liked pieces of it here and there, stuck with it and found that I like some of it. A great former teacher taught me that if you find some form, piece of music you don't like, hang on to it and give it another listen in a year or so...see if you feel the same way. I surprise myself in that aspect.

That said, music is different things to different folk. I wouldn't expect everyone to enjoy everything. I know people that find jazz, or even some blues boring because they 'solo too much'...hey whatever floats your boat and makes ya happy, go for it.

I saw the Bad Plus about two years ago. They put on a real good show for a genre of music I'm not even really that into. Watch David King's expression as he plays the drums, it's entertaining in itself.
