Dead Man's Chest (First Attempt)

No, it is not some kind of odd Minnesota porn, it is that Johnny Depp sequel pirate movie thing. We got the tickets online, completely ignoring the fact that this was opening night and there would more than likely be fanboys galore.

Coupled with this, we were downtown at a nice stadium theater...hmm, not such a good idea....only front row seating was left and we saw someone dressed as a pirate.

Luckily, the theater people gave us passes to see it at a more reasonable time.

I knew that the first one was wildly popular--hell, I really liked it, despite the hated Disney moniker. I had no idea people would actually dress up for it. Funny as all getout--but it just doesn't enhance my viewing experience....guess it would have been alright if there was room to sit.

I am thinking a nice Sunday early show will be nice--especially at the same or another nice new stadium complex. I usually do not go to the movies, so I like to have the best sound/seating/screen. May write a review if I actually get to see this one.

As for the pirate--this was outside the mall-thingamabob on 4th and Morrison--interesting area and great people-watching if you have ever been to Portland. Dude was probably in his 20s or so, and of course, dressed like the raggedy pirate-types that are prevalent in the movie.

Here is a rough cut dialogue with the aforementioned pirate:

Chad: Ah shit, fanboi...
Rich: Hmmm
Tatiana: Ah fuck, forgot this is premier day
Pirate (to Kimberly): Excuse me fair lady, may I have a cigarette?
Kimberly: Are you dressed like a pirate?
Pirate: I am a pirate
Kimberly: What kind of pirate are you?
Chad: A cigarette pirate?
Pirate: No, I am just asking for a cigarette, not stabbing and taking cigarettes
Chad: Oh, that's nice
Pirate: Thanks for the smoke!
Rich (to Kimberly): Mind the scurvy

...

Well, that is all.

Actually, there were some Goths about, but that is just Portland.

Saw it last night as well. Only pirates we had were collecting dollar bills for some children's charity. Give a dollar, sign the star, star gets posted, that kind of thing. Some guy actually did a really bang-up job of looking like Jack Sparrow. The rest...well...they just looked like idiots.

I'm not going to pick apart the movie because overall I enjoyed it. I will say that a) I didn't expect the last scene and b) I hate when movie studios set things up so blatantly for a sequel. Yes, I know that two movies were filmed back-to-back, but still.

[Show]: I did love that they brought back the two non-longer-undead pirates from the first movie (forget their names...the one with the glass eye and the short bald guy). Their bits of dialog throughout the movie were quite funny.

[Show]: I think I was the only one in my party that caught the shot of the boots in the hut when they were there the first time getting info on the heart.

I was really afraid of how they would pull off the "sea-monsters" in this movie, but it was cool in the end. I liked being able to see Boot-Strap changing throughout the movie as well. It was subtle until the end when the shot was on his face as new barnacle-growths popped up on his cheek. Talk about an acne problem!

There were pirates where I went as well, but that's because I was at the drafthouse. People always dress up there.

I enjoyed the movie..

I have seen it twice since it was released, once last night, and once this morning. The movie seems to have more of the "that can't really happen" factor than the first one, and thats always one of my pet peeves in movies, but besides that it was very entertaining.. I felt more comfortable watching it the 2nd time, and it seemed to fly by as opposed to the first time when it seemed to drag on.

Bottom line is i enjoyed the movie, deffinately worth a watch, and i look forward to the final sequel in 3 months.

Tickets can't be much higher now than they were when spiderman and Episode 3 came out, which are the broken records respectively.

If anything, local theathers have knocked a buck or 2 here off ticket prices recently.

Not at the Alamo Drafthouse! They show short films, prior versions or clips (if seeing a sequel), and other stuff. For instance, before MI3 they showed Tom Cruise making a fool of himself in multiple ways as well as the Scientology episode of South Park. They also run different X vs Y between/before the movies. For Pirates of the Caribbean 2, they had 2 people down around the UT campus. They dressed one up like Superman and the other like a Pirate. Then the sent them out with cups to see who could "beg" for more money. The winning "movie" would make more money. The Pirate collected more!

There was a pre-screening of it at a theatre near my house. They were showing it on all 14 screens in the theatre, and all 14 screens had people sitting on the stairs because there was not a single seat anywhere.

Then a few of us tried to go on opening night, but at 8:00 pm all of the the showing including the 8:45, 9:40, 10, 10:30, two 11 showings, the 11:30 and the 12:30 were all sold out at multiple theatres. This was the same case on saturday night. So I am a little bitter about the whole thing from the start, nothing pisses me off more than getting excited to see a movie and having it be sold out.

I think we are going to try again sometime during the week this week, hopefully we will have better luck.

buying tickets online is your friend. I try to buy mine early in the week so I don't have that problem.

Yeah, I was going to and then forgot about it. To be honest though, im not all that mad I guess because I don't like going to a movie where there isn't a empty seat in the theatre, especially if it's not rated r.

I just wish that didn't mean me waiting until a movie is out for a month before I can go enjoy the movie.

Hehe, its stuff like that that make me happy that here in DK, we buy THE seat we want (if its free of course), not A seat, so when Pirates come out here tomorrow, i got the one of the two middle seats on the 2nd row from the top

I can go in from the net, select my seat, and order the ticket, just need to pick it up 30/45 min before show start (depending on the time of day), or if i would get a new ink cartridge for my printer, i could buy the ticket online (so i wouldnt have to pick it up) and print it at home.

Here are the main theater room in my favorite theater.

True, not a big one, but the owner got some nice priorities, 1. Sound, 2, seats (armchairs for each chair, so you dont need to fight whoever is next to you for space), cupholders in the armchair for each seat), then the screen on 3rd place

.
Oh, and it was the first theater in town where you could bring beer into the theater rooms themselves, not just drink it outside (and no, i have yet to see a drunk person in there, only the usual annoying kids on occasion).

It's also showing in roughly 500 more theatres than those other two movies. Which doesn't hurt the numbers any. Doing the math all three come out pretty close to equal.

Although that's really an indication of how good a movie is but it is interesting. At least to me.

Finally went to see this...

[Show]: I do believe that this was written by the dredges of hollywood mishmash writers. Pointless and meandering plot, unlikable main characters and boring rehashed characters. Depp phoned it in, Knightly and Bloom plodded about utterly lost--but there was no script to let them be even remotely likeable.

Utterly contrived nonsense, pounding away for 2.5 hours with overly-long and confused tail-chasing--only to reach its goal of delivering a third movie. There was no buildup, no tension, no sense of the relationships that were developed in the first film. Such is the mess of this film.

Some good swordplay and nifty CGI, and even a couple of funny sequences, but could have been honed down to a slim and passable short, with a kneehigh pile of celluoid simply editted out.

2/10 and I did really like the first film.

[Show]: Well, i saw it today, and im kinda dissapointed.
It reminded me of Matrix 2, kinda uneven acting (although Depp was brilliant as usual), great effects (the Kraken rocked, and i loved the face of Davy Jones), BUT we also had something that tried to take over where the first left off, and left us without an ending, and it just didnt have the spirit the first one had.
Was too much time spend on the "hey, im the kraken, im the big effect in this movie, let me eat ships" thing, rather than maybe get some more story in, or get some more from the crew of the Flying Duchman.
Oh, and it was kinda dissapointing to see how they mismatched sea stories, mixing Davy Jones and the Flying Duchman, could have been any other ship, but no, had to get an existing legend, AND it then didnt even fly

But decent movie overall, at least better than Matrix 2 . Ill give it 6/10, would have been 7/10 if it had had an ending and not just a cliffhanger.

I am assuming you mean the 'Crash' thread as I did not comment on nor see Click (heard it was kinda funny). Opinions are opinions and my opinion holds that Crash was and is indeed horseshit. I don't make money giving reviews, obviously (half-assed reviews for $$$...may be on to something here....)

Someone referenced Matrix 2.... yeah, I sorta of made that sequel connection as well, but I think the Matrix people were actually trying, sad as it was.

I certainly thought the plot was thin (at best) It reminded me why T2 was such an awesome sequel; they had years to write the first plot, and they had years to write the sequel, it wasn't merely thrown together in a few weeks (along with a *third* script) to milk a successful francise.

I think the cinematography and direction was actually better in this one though... opening scene might have been enough to sway me, I thought that was beautifully realised and shot.

Bill Nighy was fantastic as DJ.

Depp, Knightly and Bloom were too "comfortable" with their roles and weren't trying anything special in this one as in the first.

The witch woman was hot

I'll still go an see the third one though

agreed. i loved the first movie, but this one was poorly written and the editing was even worse.

I liked it. The makeup/cgi on the crew of the Flying Dutchman was great, there were a lot of cute-funny little parts, and I wasn't expecting the sequel to a movie based on a ride at Disney world to be the greatest story ever told, so I wasn't disappointed.

I'll definitely watch it again, albeit probably on DVD. I look forward to the next one.

I thought it was fun. I'd put it on par with the first. I was happy to see many from the first return.

I think the first one did so well because no one expected a thing out of it, and it was actually an above average flick. The second one is under the microscope by both fans and critics alike due to the huge success of the first movie. I think people are being unjustly harsh this time around. Some critics really have a chip on their shoulder. It's like when LotR came out with 95% positive reviews, yet 5% had to say they hated it for some reason or another...

I like it for what it is. Like Sylvus, I'm not expecting the world out of a movie based on a theme park ride. The effects alone were worth the price of admission IMO. Davey Jones was a delight to stare at, as was his ship and his crew. I really look forward to the 3rd one. It has already finished shooting, I believe. I know there are movie posters out already for the 3rd one.

Entertaining, but my wife made a good point about this. Her opinion was that they were too wrapped up in what they were doing, story wise, for the third movie to pay any real attention to making a completely paced plot for this one. I will reserve final judgement until I see the third movie, but for now I have to say Depp and Nighly saved this from being a merely mediocre movie.

It has already finished shooting, I believe. I know there are movie posters out already for the 3rd one.

That was my impression as well until i read an article in a magazine that said the film was only 60% shot due to the weather patterns where they are shooting.. Its been raining constantly and they haven't been able to shoot.

Gotta agree with Hesten, Canelek, Zaeleth and Syenye. This was a movie I really wanted to like. I too loved the first one, but DMC just didn't happen for me.

Nope, but i know a lot of US theaters are on a "buy a ticket, and better be in PLENTY of time to beat the 500 other idiots going for the 20 good seats" system.

I dont think i would go to a theater ever if i had to compete for the good seats.

I thought it was Munky Island all over!

Davy Jones was a fun idea they made him, he resembled Cthulhu a bit!
