Deadwood Season 3

Post by Winnow »

Starts tonight!
Quotes from Metacritic wrote:100 New York Post Adam Buckman

Its scripts - always among the finest on TV - are even stronger this time around.

100 New York Daily News David Bianculli

The language, the acting, the themes - everything in "Deadwood" is good as gold. In TV entertainment terms, maybe even better.

100 Detroit Free Press Mike Duffy

Milch's darkly hilarious exploration of the American frontier spirit is back for a third season of twisted human conniving.

100 San Francisco Chronicle Tim Goodman

This series is one of a kind.

100 Seattle Post-Intelligencer Melanie McFarland

To call "Deadwood" great television doesn't begin to do it justice.

90 Chicago Tribune Maureen Ryan

Every scene teems with an enthralling, fully realized vision of life, the kind of jostling pageant of humanity in the most satisfying works of Dickens or Trollope.

90 The New Yorker Nancy Franklin

A gorgeously living thing.

Haha, nice quote-whoring. It is amazing the shit those asshats spew--albeit mostly for really bad movies, which this is not.

Back to the topic:

DVR is ready to record. Fuck yeah.I have no doubt that the writing, acting (well, Olyphant can be as wooden as a fucking canoe at times), direction et al. will be just as good or better than the first seasons. Once again there are many great plotlines that were dick-in-the-wind from last season... some pretty bitchin' cliffhangers there!

[hide]There's something about a person putting a gun to their head that makes me turn away. When Joanie Stubbs did it, I was looking through my fingers.

EB's ass kicking is pretty funny, especially if he didn't say anything afterall.

[hide]Yeah, Joanie has apparently gone off the deep end, which is understandable.

re: EB assbeat - Bullock needs random violence or he gets uber-shifty. The late hit and almost-kick-to-torso had me almost in tears of laughter.

Jane is still one of the best written characters--I too loved the bits about her complaining about Alma and Joanie whispering.

I miss Wu--hopefully he will be in episodes upcoming! (Didn't see preview for next week if he is there.)[/hide]

Looks like viewer bitching at those cocksucker execs at HBO has given us at least four more hours of Deadwood after season 3 ends.

We'll get two 2-hour movies to wind up the series. Nice!
HBO bows to 'Deadwood' fans

By Rick Bird

"Deadwood" will get a finale in an agreement apparently reached by producers and HBO after a month in which incensed fans mounted Internet protest campaigns and called for a "Cancel HBO Day" in the wake of the series being dropped.

Variety magazine reported over the weekend that "Deadwood" creator David Milch and the premium channel reached a deal to produce what amounts to a four-hour finale - two, two-hour specials. Air dates and production timetable yet to be determined.

Just as the third season of the irreverent Western is to premiere (9 p.m. Sunday), it was revealed a few weeks ago that HBO decided against picking up a fourth year option for the actors.

Milch, who sounded off in the TV media the last few weeks about the decision, had said he was led to believe HBO was committed through a fourth season. Milch already finished shooting the third season with no real finale to his story.

HBO, which bills itself "not TV," is suddenly acting like a regular TV network with an eye on the bottom line. Reports say it discontinued "Deadwood" for financial reasons. Variety reports the show costs $5 million per episode, over twice what a regular broadcast network series can run.

HBO also lavishly spent $100 million on the first season of "Rome," an unheard of amount by any TV standards for a series (it was worth it for viewers; it showed). Rome has been renewed. "The dying days of "Sopranos" are also expensive, with star James Gandolfini reportedly getting $20 million for the final season.

Ironically, Milch may have been unwittingly responsible for the undoing of his "Deadwood." HBO is said to be high on his new series, "John from Cincinnati," scheduled to start shooting next month, banking on it going into the lineup as a signature series. (No, we still don't know what the Cincinnati reference is for the series, described as a "surf noire.")

The deal for a proper "Deadwood" burial may actually be one of the rare cases where fan reaction counted. Viewer lobbying groups sprang up almost overnight when it was revealed the third season would be the last. Unlike ad-supported TV, HBO is dependent on the feel-good vibe that its subscribers are getting something special. It likely behooved the network to reach some "Deadwood" finale deal rather than lose that "not TV" charm.

Nice! Stick it to those cocksuckers!

All it takes is some Jewish lessons to understand that those HBO cocksuckers can rake it in if they pay attention to their viewers. I mean really, all the movies they play are far behind the curve and the only reason they are around is due to the amazing series that come out. :)

Season 3, Episode 2:

[hide]There's a lot of shit going on. I was in "wtf is going on" mode for quite a bit of this episode.

I would normally figure that Hearst would be taking a bullet or getting his throat cut soon but he's a RL character and doesn't die unless they decide to change history.

I wonder how bad off Al's hand is. They left us in limbo as to how much Al eventually told Hearst before being let go.

The side story of the elections hasn't amounted to much yet. I'm guessing that will heat up in episode 3.

Bullock always looks like he's going to kill someone...even his wife. I like his character though. I wouldn't want to fuck with him as sherriff. He's got my vote!

Why the fuck wouldn't Cy Tolliver kill the Reverend that stabbed him? ...and why wasn't the reverend put on trial for stabbing Cy in public? I hope this storyline and Joanie Stubb's suicidal tendancies clears up soon.

Great show. This was definately a setup episode.

Looks like Mr Wu is back next episode![/hide]

Deadwood has lost a step this season. It's still enjoyable but it's a little convoluted. You're normally used to not knowing exactly what's going on in the stoylines but this season seems a little much.

Still a great show but hoping the plotlines become a little more meaningful soon.

A great episode last night.
[Show]
Hollister just couldn't take it anymore...but I didn't think he was going blow his own brains out. And the fight between Dority and the Capt. was very good...and pretty darn realistic. My wife was yelling "Oh God Matthew...Oh God!!" in a state of shock and horror when the eyeball came out.
With every passing episode the season gets better and better. Next week looks like another good one. I continue to love the look on Bollock's face...he looks like a powderkeg with a short fuse that's about to be lit.

anybody else realize the one major thing missing from this season so far?

great humor.

other than that this season is great and last nights fight was probably the most intense moment in the series so far.

I dunno, there's been some serious gems as far as comedic lines. For example:
[Show]
last night the exchange between Trixy and Star was hilarious.

But yes, the season has started out pretty dark. I'm loving it.

Entourage has also been genius.

I don't know...there have been some moments that made me laugh. When Dority is so ready to go after the Capt. and Swearengen says something snide to put him in his place. And how can you not laugh at ANYTHING that EB says.

I can't remember if it was last week or two weeks ago...but there was a scene with EB and Richardson (he's the really scruffy old guy with the giant beard)...and EB says something to Richardson...who rarely ever says or does much...and Richardson put on the biggest cheesy grin and gave a thumbs up. The wife and I burst out laughing.

I just hope they are able to wrap season 3 up enough to leave the viewers satisfied. I read an interview with Ian McShane (Al Swearengen). He was upset that Milch cancelled after 3 seasons. He said that he felt there needed to be 4-5 seasons to adequately tell the story of Deadwood.

Incidentally...I volunteer at a place called Old Cowtown here in Wichita, KS. And part of the process is having an intimate knowledge of the old west so you can adequately portray a character from the 1870's on the grounds. One of the things I learned in my studies is that all of the major characters on the Deadwood series had real life counterparts.

Bollock and Sol were very close friends in real life and came to Deadwood together. Bollock was a learned and determined man that wrote several books and was quite the entrepeneur.

Al Swearengen did rule the roost in Deadwood for a time. Eventually he met his ruin and wound up dying when he slipped as he tried to hop a train.

Although the language was "colorful" in the old west...there weren't quite as many "mother fuckers" and "cocksuckers" being thrown about as they would portray in Deadwood. But the costuming for the show is amazingly authentic. We have a historian that has to approve all of our clothes at Old Cowtown...they have to be period authentic from head to toe...we aren't even allowed to repair anything (even if it is our own) if it tears....even the repairs have to be authentic in nature.

Incidentally...here I am during a "shootout". We use our own guns with primer blanks. My gun is an 1873 Colt SAA in 45 Long Colt.

Image

You can almost see Al or Hearst standing on the balcony. All of the buildings were built in the 1860s to 1870s...it's a great place if you are into the old west.

"...best served cold..."
[Show]
Now that Bulloch has gone wacko again and haulled Hearst off to jail, wtf did Al have planned that he kept so quiet after being mutilated by the old ass?

I must be missing some things in the multiple plot threads.... great stuff though, although I do miss some of the regular characters this season (namely, Wu). Also.... Brian Cox is great, just great! (still love his Super Troopers random showing) However, it seems rather late to introduce new characters? I guess this season has me a bit confused, since the pacing is different than the previous two.

Either way, it is simply a marvelous show and I once again count days until the next hour.

Well, Cox's character, Jack Langrish, was an actual figure in the real Deadwood. He was a Dubliner and a sort of con man that actually made the North American debut of the Mikado in Deadwood.

What I like about the introduction of the Langrish character is the relationship he has with Swearengen. You can tell they are obviously friends...and that they are two very different people....yet they have this ease about each other. A good character to introduce...even if the series is almost over.

Al didn't have one specific plan regarding Hearst, but rather a series of plans depending on what Hearst's first move was. He had repeatedly made it clear he didn't want to make the first move, but also made it clear he had nfc what Hearst was going to do first. When Bullock hauled Hearst to jail, Al stated that Bullock had eliminated several options.

Right. Caught that, as well as Al's giving Dan the OK to go after the Cap'n since Al couldn't figure the angle.

As far as Hearst, it seemed that he never figured on his man getting beat in the fight...seemed rather depressed even, unless it was just a feint as to get all parties involved caught with their pants down.

You know that Hearst is also based on a real person that came to Deadwood. I don't want to give anything away...but
[Show]
Hearst (George Hearst) was the father of magnate William Randolph Hearst
Also, here are some real life pictures of the characters on Deadwood -

George Hearst

Seth Bullock

Seth Bullock met Theodore Roosevelt when they were both lawmen...the two struck up a friendship that would last a lifetime

Seth was a business partner and friend of Sol Star..just like on the series.

I just watched the last three Deadwood episodes in one sitting including last night's.

After the two previous, rather confusing, episodes, the story is back on track.
[Show]
The eye-popping scene and aftermath was intense.
On the other hand, I don't like the turn Entourage took last night.

Vince may have principals but if he hates a guy, he needs to take the 12.5 million and finish the movie. If I was Arne, I'd be pissed. Vince was under contract and now he's going to get sued. Better hope Saigon's carreer takes off!

I don't think he'll be sued, they dropped him after he had agreed to do the movie (all the drama took place over like a week, not enough time to cost them any money, since production hadn't even began yet). Now he is out of work with a major studio head looking to ruin his career though.

Enjoyed Sunday's episode! I look forward to seeing how this all plays out for this season.

...

[Show]
The only thing I found off was the bit between Odell and Hearst....con job? Minor, really, as the showdown is building up! I was glad to see Dan's trip to Cheyenne postponed for now so they could muster their forces against the impending Hearst shitstorm.

Yeah, the Hearst storyline started to wear a bit but it was still an excellent series even in season 3.

Anyone hear news on when the two 2-hour final episodes will be broadcast?

Last time I was looking around for info (a couple months ago), they were trying to work out scheduling issues with the main cast members. Virtually all of the principal actors had signed on, but several had other commitments that need to be worked around. Expectations were that shooting probably won't begin until next spring / summer. Milch was expecting to get to work on writing the two episodes later this spring or late in the summer, depending on his own availability. At the time, he was waiting to find out if another TV project was going to get the green light, which would force him to spend a few months working on that project before getting to the Deadwood episodes.

Releases on DVD in June! Can't wait!

Oh and I realized I never posted this pic. This is the birthday cake I ordered for my sister's birthday last September. She is a big Deadwood fan and has the hots for Timothy Olyphant. It was a big hit at her party.

The picture is a little low-res/blurry but I blame that on someone else's shitty camera!

Yeah it was edible. Some fancy printer thing that uses edible coloring and icing.

The cake itself was amazing too, not that anyone who doesn't live in the Houston area benefits from that info. But if you do...A bakery called Nooky's in Sugarland made it. They specialize in erotic cakes, so I figured I wouldn't have any problem with them writing an expletive on it. They offer various alchohol-laced "fillings" for their cakes, so I picked the buttery nipple flavor. It was so amazing. My only regret was that I didn't get a bigger size so my sister could have leftovers.
