What does Microsoft's stock history have to do with Sony's dominance in the videogame console market.. other than the downturn at the end of 2005/beginning of 2006.... which happens to be coincide with the time the 360 was released?
Also, Microsoft's game division didn't even exist until 2002 and they are currently a loss leader for MS... So I guess you're saying MS is doing well despite the failure of the Xbox and XBox 360 to make a significant impact on the videogame console market.

No, it gained marketshare because it had no marketshare to lose.Sumdaor wrote:The orignal xbox gained marketshare because it was superior hardware wise to the ps2. The games looked better on the xbox then they did the ps2. That being said, I don't see how the 360 is going to hold over the ps3 if the hardware is superior and the price drops.
If any other company released a product into a market with only 2 competitors and gained a pitiful 10% marketshare it would be considered a failure. Especially if they were losing money on every unit sold.

microsoft isn't in the gaming industry because they want to make games and consoles. they're collecting data that's worth far more than the gaming industry would ever make them.miir wrote:Also, Microsoft's game division didn't even exist until 2002 and they are currently a loss leader for MS... If you think Microsoft's little dive is bad (and rest assured that will change with cheaper 360 volume, Vista and Office 2007 next year), check Sony's stock over the next year with their overbloated PS3 that will still be a huge money loser for them even at it's high price tag.miir wrote:What does Microsoft's stock history have to do with Sony's dominance in the videogame console market.. other than the downturn at the end of 2005/beginning of 2006.... which happens to be coincide with the time the 360 was released?
Microsoft knows what it's doing. It's all over the network/online Live side of things and they are making an effort to improve game selection.
You people think Sony, which is known for shitty software, is going to pull some fantastic mega online network out of their ass. Even Microsoft took years to refine XBox Live to what it is today. Keep dreaming people.

As for Office, I haven't seen anyone "upgrade" Office since 2000.
MS won't ever go poor being the predominant OEM installed OS, but they sure as hell won't meet their sales targets either.

I'll be buying Vista when it comes out and you'll be buying or stealing it within a year of release. You can quote that and we'll check back around January 2008!
Yeah I really need an OS that has higher system specs than Quake 4. MS can't even come up with a killer app for it so they are forcing people upgrade to get DX10 and games like Halo 2 (lol). A conputer won't exist for another 5 years that could run Vista and Halo 2 at over 10 fps, but hey.
Nice job on splintering the game development market by only letting the nine Vista users have DX10. PC developers won't code their games using it (unless MS bribes them to - the only way they ever get 3rd party support). The entire PC gaming industry will suffer at a time when most major PC developers are wondering why the fuck they waste their time making PC games anyway, when console games sell 10x more units and a pirated about 10% as much.

Jesus H, I think you really nailed their strategy. It's brilliant. Focus on low demand corporate lusers who are impressed by stupid shit like folders IN 3D!!! on the PC side, force those pesky gamers into consoles, where their access and hardware can be controlled.kyoukan wrote:Nice job on splintering the game development market by only letting the nine Vista users have DX10. It's about online subscription games you moron. You can't pirate those unless you want to play on a server with 10 people.kyoukan wrote:The entire PC gaming industry will suffer at a time when most major PC developers are wondering why the fuck they waste their time making PC games anyway, when console games sell 10x more units and a pirated about 10% as much.
All the Blizzard Fanbois can tell you how many people have monthly subs to that game.
I don't care if you keep your XP and DirectX 9 in some form of liberal pussy protest. The majority will upgrade and it will be worth it.
Microsoft, with directX 10 has made developing games for both the 360 and PC even easier while at the same time introducing LIVE to the PC users as well as 360. Sony and their infantile first generation hack-a-network and bitch of a platform to develop for will do fine I'm sure!...because they are S O N Y and they RULED last generation's consoles!...as did Nintendo at one point didn't they? Maybe Atari back in the day? Ah the good old days! Keep living in them! Keep bitching about computer upgrades when everyone including their 100 year old grandmother knows they aren't stopping anytime soon and why would you want to stop the progress of technology unless you were an idiot? Sony's Dominance in Game Consoles at Risk, According to ABI Research
Video Game Hardware, Software and Services
Oyster Bay, NY - May 16, 2006
http://www.abiresearch.com
Sony is placing a serious bet that its inclusion of a Blu-ray drive in the PlayStation 3 will entice consumers to pay a premium price for the new console, despite lower cost alternatives from both Nintendo and Microsoft. However, according to ABI Research, Sony's console pricing strategy is fraught with risk, and may ultimately jeopardize its market leadership position.
"Asking consumers to pay $500 to $600 for a game console, when most have yet to purchase an HDTV, will give many current PlayStation 2 owners reason to consider the competition," said Michael Wolf, principal analyst with ABI Research's broadband and multimedia research practice. "Sony has clearly hamstrung itself with a box that is expensive to manufacture, and these costs are driving a retail pricing strategy that places a high financial burden on the consumer."
As the E3 show came to a close last week, Nintendo was the clear winner in the "buzz" stakes: the industry embraced the innovation the company has shown with its motion-sensing controller. By focusing on unique gameplay experiences and shunning the graphics space-race consuming its competitors, Nintendo is enjoying much higher publisher support than was evident at the launch of its GameCube.
ABI Research also believes that Nintendo is the best positioned of the three to expand into the casual gamer and new gamer audiences with creative titles such as Wii Sports and WarioWare: Smooth Moves.
While Nintendo had the best showing at E3, the biggest announcement came from Microsoft with the unveiling of the Live Anywhere service. This new iteration of the company's online gaming service is clearly still in the development stage, but the ability for PC and mobile phone users to access the same online gaming community is a huge strategic maneuver with important long term implications.
"The ability for gamers to be continuously connected across three screens is incredibly important," said Wolf. "While we believe buy-once-play-anywhere will be hard to implement due to intellectual property and technology restrictions, the initial benefits of Live Anywhere—such as mobile scheduling and game asset purchases—will give Microsoft something that the other two competitors will be hard-pressed to counter."
ABI Research's study "Video Game Hardware, Software and Services" examines worldwide hardware, software, and online services gaming markets. It forms part of three subscription services, Mobile Devices Research Service, Consumer Electronics Research Service, and Digital Media Distribution and Management Research Service, which include a variety of research reports, regular market updates, forecast and industry databases, Vendor Matrices, ABI Insights, and analyst inquiry time.
Founded in 1990 and headquartered in New York, ABI Research maintains global operations supporting annual research programs, intelligence services and market reports in automotive, wireless, semiconductors, broadband, and energy. For information visit http://www.abiresearch.com, or call

you realize that the entire game industry doesnt have a single good thing to say about making DX10 vista exclusive? and by game industry I mean people who make games, not fat, ugly slobbering neckbeards like yourself and the doinks in these fucking worthless articles you keep googling for in some hopeless attempt to look like you know what the fuck you are yabbering about.

I'll get vista when our first customers get vista, which will be when MS pulls XP off the shelves; which from past history is well after 1/2008.. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle/default.mspx
Though, according to that page, MS thinks it's still "early 2006".

Where is the fucking killer ap for the 360? Halo 3? Right now if it weren't for Oblivion and the Robotron download, our 360 would never get turned on, and there are not exactly any promising titles down the road. Fuck, we play guitar hero more than we do all games combined on the 360. They need a major exclusive title in a genre other than shooter or they will be on the outside looking in, again.
War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .
Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.

And how easily we forget the recently released Table Tennis!
So what's the killer app for the PS3? Vaporware: The Best of the Rendered Movies for the PS3 due out Nov 2007?
Metal Gear Solid movies look good but the actual game Gears of War will be out long before that on the 360.

Uhh...Winnow....all of your arguements against the PS3 are based on complete speculation...you are aware of this, yes? Why don't you wait till it comes out THEN make your comparions.
I get the feeling that this thread is going to be widely reference in future threads made well after the verdict is in about the PS3.

Where out of your pimply ass are you pulling this information? There was no discussion of this at E3 and the only thing at all on the Red Octane site says they are considering it, but need to see if a controllre can be made. That last blurb was one line in an old thread on their forums.Winnow wrote:The next version of Guitar Hero will be on the 360.
PS3 had the flying combat game and metal gear solid in playable states at E3, that I saw. They also have square on board (the 360 is just getting a port of FFO, as of now) along with several other RPG developers, so you know that bazse is covered. Its even worse if you compare Nintendo to the 360. Its been what, a half a year and theres like 5 shooters, a madden port, Kameo, and oblivion? Pretty fucking weak, I don't care how you spin it. The 360 is going to be digging turds in the basement while the real front runners (read Sony and Nintendo) duke it out. Its great that people too stupid to run MAME on their PCs now have someplace to play Joust, but there needs to be more than just shooters comming out of the 360 lineup to support it, online community or not.And how easily we forget the recently released Table Tennis!

Of course the 360 version will be better with downloadable songs off Xbox LIVE, a live stage for online multiplayer and game channels so people can watch. The key quote comes from Mike Dornbrook who says "We'd be crazy not to do a 360 version."

I can't even remember the last time i turned on my 360. Nothing against the hardware, but there's just not really any games out there that excite me. Overall I've been disappointed in my 360 because of this. What good is nice hardware without good software to run on it?
I definately think it's too early to declare Microsoft the winner in the console wars. While Microsoft may be powerful, they don't win every battle (i.e. Money v. Quicken, Asheron's Call v. EQ).

I can't remember the last time I turned on my PS2 (except for Guitar Hero which is coming to the 360)
Microsoft doesn't win all the battles but they do pretty well on the battles they focus their attention on (Netscape vs Internet Explorer, Microsoft Office vs anything)
I'm not declaring Microsoft the winner but am definately debating all the Sony lovers that assume PS3 will dominate just because the PS2 did and forget the there were several other brands before them that were at the top of the heap and no longer reside there.
As for killer app games, I think that everyone in general is bored with console games. As the lack of enthusiasm in the PS3 at E3 indicates, the standard Sony stuff isn't making anyone wet their pants either.
It gets back to the Xbox 360 having, at minimum, one extra year to develop for their platform, the ease of creating games for PC/Xbox 360 and allowing those platforms to mix online with Live Anywhere.
It's clear to me that Microsoft is focused and has a purpose this time around while Sony is making things more complicated and expensive while not really adding anything that people want. It's all about the internet these days and Microsoft is focusing their efforts in the right area for that.

It does, to him....
There's something to be said for brand whores, but the same can be said for anti-brand whores. You're not helping yourself or anyone else.
Winnow you need to relax and do what you want for yourself. You're only informing a few people but inflaming many. And while I may have found some of this information interesting, I can't see myself buying the PS3 nor the 360.
I almost bought a 360 when they came out... When it came down to it, I looked at the money, and how it would look on my non-hd setup, and purchased a PS2 and a modchip. I have 40 games for my ps2. Thats 40 games that I DO NOT PLAY. I had more fun modding it, lol. It lays above my monitor, still powered, collecting dust, and is for sale if anyone wants a modded slim ps2 with 40+ games
Fuck 'em all.. they all just want as much of your disposable income as they can fascinate you out of. It used to be common to have owned every console system, and I had at one point up to the ps2/xbox (this was my second ps2).. but that time is over.. If anything, I could see buying the Wii.

Fash, I'm not suggesting anyone buy these consoles...it's the same with politics. I observe what's going on and speculate on the outcome while others get all emotional about it which clouds their judgement.
I'm bored to tears with the 360 as well atm. I see some good games coming out soon for the 360 that will be out long before the PS3's first generation games arrive though.
A lot of this apathy towards consoles IMO is that people are just plain bored with all the same stuff. Nintendo is getting lots of points in this area with their whacky contoller yet shitty graphics.
After a day or two of "swinging away" in your home using the pointing and motion controls, that will die down as well. I do think the Wii will be huge with kids and a lot if shit will get broken with hyper active kids flailing around madly with the controller which will lead to a surge in more ritalin prescriptions for kids.
The rest of the pack is going to catch up to Sony this round, or at the very least, Sony will just be hanging on to the sheep console gamers much like republicans hang on to the fundie vote.
Sony: PS3 will rock! You losers will buy it even it has no games!
Sheep: OMG I'm buying it!

There's no way I'm buying a PS3 when it's released. Just like the PS2, it's going to have jack shit for games for about 6 months while developers learn how to properly code games for it.
I may buy one after the first price drop, if I see shitloads of blooray movies (and I'm not talking The Fast and Furious type crap) with assloads of special features AND the good RPGs they've been hyping up as well as the old console staples like Madden and NCAA foozballs.
I will not be dumping $600 on hype.

assassin's creed looks good, but not worth $660 to play it. maybe they'll have some interesting downloadable content. besides oblivion, nothing has really held my interest for the 360 yet, but i do enjoy the xbox live arcade games. one of the problems i have with the ps3 and the 360 is the exclusivity of development... i think it's a bad idea for the game industry, but then again i haven't enjoyed the last 5 tom clancy games, so i doubt i enjoy the next 50.HELICOPTER TOWN wrote:i wet my pants for assassin's creed winnow!
my last hope for the 360 is gears of war and ninety nine nights, i don't see much else i like on the horizon ;/
the guitar hero on 360 came from a conversation with a developer. the red octane guys were hands down the coolest and nicest at the show.
After you get over yourselves and make ten posts telling me this is a biased MS opnion, the bolded part is a serious concern and it was mentioned at E3 that there weren't a lot of polygons on the screen in PS3 games...lack of memory for textures can't be a good thing either.Matt Lee of Microsoft sizes up the PS3's Cell chip and doesn't think it's much cop
Matt Lee, a developer at Microsoft's Game Technology Group, has again shared his knowledgeable insight - this time shifting his gaze towards the PS3 and saying that it will be "difficult" to port games between the Xbox 360 and PS3.
In an interesting interview with website Ars Technica, Lee said that the asymmetric nature of Sony's Cell processor could cause trouble for Xbox 360 ports. "I think porting from Xbox 360 to PS3 will be reasonably difficult," he said, "since the Xbox 360 has a lot more general purpose processing power that can be flexibly reallocated, and all of the Xbox 360 CPU cores have equal access to all memory. The asymmetric nature of the Cell could easily lead to situations where the game has too little of one type of processing power and too much of another."
He continued, "The content might suffer as well, since you'll never see a PS3 title with more than 256MB of textures at any given time, due to the split graphics and system memory banks. When we announced 512MB of unified memory on Xbox 360, I think all of our game developers (and the artists too) did a little happy dance. It's easier to use and gives developers much more flexibility in how they allocate memory for various resources."
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Microsoft dev finished by criticising the PS3's architecture, saying "I don't think the Cell is as well designed for game development as Sony would have you believe."
With Xbox 360 to PS3 ports apparently tricky and Nintendo's Wii lacking the power of the other two, could the age of port dominance finally be coming to an end? All should become clearer this Christmas, when all three next-gen consoles are on store shelves.
The Wii will dominate in sales over both the PS3 and the 360. So many people are attracted to the low price point, downloadable games from every other nintendo generation, and innovative games. 'Hardcore' gamers will buy one along with their 360/PS3. If you don't believe me compare PSP and DS sales.
I think 360 will come out in second place as long as they start ramping up their game library.
I can't wait to see the Playstation franchise go the way of Dreamcast and Sega, but unfortunately Sony has such deep pockets that it won't be for a very long time.
And to you PS3 fanboys and girls - I don't understand how you can talk with that Sony cock so far down your throat.

The downloadable content portion of the Wii is huge. It alone made me step back and think of the Wii as more than just a stupid name. I still have no wish to sit there with a controller waving my arms around while playing tho. The whole Sony vs MS crap is just that, crap. People will have their preferences. For me, in the past, Sony has come out with much more compelling games and so I'm expecting more out of it in the future. Regardless I'll almost always prefer the PC over a console if a game comes out for both (see: oblivion).
