Warhammer: Mark of Chaos E3 Trailer (awesome)
http://files.filefront.com/Warhammer+Ma ... einfo.html
Games Workshop finally seems to be placing their products into the hands of capable companies that understand the lore and themes of thier flagship products. The above trailer is the most impressive I have seen come out of E3 so far. Between this trailer and the opening sequence in Dawn of War, Blizzard certianly has competition for the king of CGI trailers.
I have a feeling that Warhammer: Mark of Chaos is going to revolutionize fantasy RTSs in much the same way that Dawn of War revolutionized Sci Fi RTS games. I really look forward to buying this one!

They both started out as pretty blatant ripoffs of Games Workshops properties. The orcs were virtually the same save for the cockney accents. Now yes, I know, they weren't the first people to come up with orcs, but they still had their own look and style to them that was totally ripped off.Zamtuk wrote:ive heard that more than once (probably here a few times). is there any merit of that at all or are the concepts just that much identical?
And Starcraft, christ. Space Marines -> Terrans. Tyranids -> Zerg. Eldar -> Protoss. I'm surprised there weren't any evil "chaotic" terrans!

I try and look at the bright side. At least Blizzard turned out some great games and lit a fire under Games Workshop's ass to do something with their lore that dosen't suck (ie: the past decade of Games Workshop computer games).
When Starcraft was released, I was also surprised that Blizzard wasn't sued, or at the very least, that more comparisons were never made between the 2 companies.

When you imitate someone's intellectual property, I think that's called copyright infringement. But, I guess Games Workshop figured they didn't have a strong case. Since these creatures are in human folklore, can anyone actually copyright their names and appearances? They've been used in almost every variety and color that can be possible now.
I'm not surprised that some game boxes don't say "Compare to Game "X""
Head into your grocery store sometime and look at the shampoo, contact lens solution, etc etc ...you'll see your particular food store's (Safeway, Walgreens, Smiths, Fry's etc etc) products side by side with a well known brand. The actual words, "compare the ingredients to Brand X Mouthwash, Shampoo, Cereal, etc" are right on the label.

Both same but one is ripped off. That type of copying goes on all the time. The same happens with games and really can't be stopped unless a company is stealing actual code.
Blizzard doesn't bother copying other people's games as they just keep copying their same exact game over and over with a different name and colors.

Those infested space marines the zerg get remind me of a lot of Possessed from Chaos, minus the exploding.Dregor Thule wrote:And Starcraft, christ. Space Marines -> Terrans. Tyranids -> Zerg. Eldar -> Protoss. I'm surprised there weren't any evil "chaotic" terrans!
GW is very protective of their storyline, merchandising, licensing, etc. Almost to a fault if you ask me. They used to have rules in their retail/gaming stores where you couldn't even play if your models weren't fully painted and based. From a merchandising standpoint I can kinda see the idea there, but it's still a bit extreme to me - which is probably why they now allow you to play with unpainted stuff in their store if you want (now decades later). You would be surprised what the criteria are just for selling their product if you were to open an independent hobby/gaming store - it's pretty rediculous.
I don't think there is a damn thing they can really do about Blizzard (and there is no question that they have ripped off GW - it IS reality). They know it, or you would be hearing about it back when Starcraft was released.
