Since the 360 launch thread is gone...

Post by Animalor »

Anyone here have suggestions on dealing with the heat coming out of the 360?

I have a 2yo daughter so putting the unit in a closed space is pretty necessary at this point.
The power brick is outside the cabinet, that helped the situation somewhat. I'm thinking of taking out the back panel from my cabinet (ikea cardboard backing) since my daugher doesn't go back there at all.

I was thinking of maybe taking out the glass from the doors and putting in some sort of fabric there instead as well to let air through but I'd probably have to convince the wife of this before mangling the thing.

Those will all help. Gotta have airflow. The more the better so taking the back off would help a bunch.

As many have experienced, even seasonal changes affect performance. I've noticed my computer fans kicking into speed more often with the room temps rising. (it's already in the 90's here during the day...not that I keep my home that temp!)

Took out the back earlier and the whole unit lost quite a bit of solidity to it so what I did is put back the bottom half of the panel.

The unit is now solid again and the 360's back section is completely open.

The front side will be a harder project cause the glass was slid into the door then the bottom part of it glued in.

I'm gonna try with just the back off for a while and see how that goes.

You could bring it back and wait until 2007.
Microsoft and Chartered Semiconductor, the manufacture of the Xbox 360's CPU, released a joint announcement declaring that the console's processor will receive an upgrade in 2007. The new chip's design will use a 65nm manufacturing process instead of 90nm, which will provide a smaller heat output because less power will be used. Although the new CPU isn't expected to have any performance increases because there would be too many compatibility issues, this will hopefully solve many overheating issues. After the 360's launch many gamers were distraught when they saw their red ring of light appear, but luckily their cries aren't going unheard.

Just noticed that the DDO post is gone. I hope Xanupox makes haste to update us on all the wonderous CT people who've joined him for his training/ninjalooting/spawn ganking reunion tour.

I tried to immerse my xbox 360 in a barrel of liquid nitrogen but it all evaporated as soon as it made contact with the back plating of my xbox after playing TR Legends for 45 minutes

am i rite?

but seriously folks. I don't want to say my xbox 360 gets hot, but iceland called yesterday; they want to build a geothermal power plant in my entertainment center.

Opening up the back of the thing seems to have done the trick. It only got mildly hot after playing random demos for about 3 hours or so.
(GRAW, Kameo, TR:Legends, FIFA 2k6 etc..).

My wife is releived that I won't be attempting surgery on the front of the unit.

News on the upcoming HD-DVD Add-On to the Xbox 360:
HD-DVD Addon: Connected via USB, Price tomorrow at Pre-E3 Conference

>> Microsoft posted some details about the HD-DVD addon for the Xbox 360 on their E3 2006 coverage site:

Xbox 360, while powerful on its own, is also a foundation from which new technology and accessories can be added. Chief among these is the recently announced HD DVD add-on.

This much anticipated accessory carries with it an extension of the HD Era that Xbox 360 offers, and provides the most visually stunning movie watching experience available.

This new accessory will connect to the Xbox 360 console with a USB cable, enabling it to harness the power of the Xbox 360 console for the HD video outputs and digital surround sound. As an accessory, it becomes another shining example of the flexibility of Xbox 360 designed into the console in order to grow and add new features. It's also just one of several new accessories being announced at E3.

Consumers and retailers can now see the immediate price gulf between HD DVD players and their upcoming competition. If you can find one of the new Toshiba HD DVD players (retailers nationwide sold out when they launched in April) they sell for as little as $499, whereas the expected starting price of Blu-ray players starts at $1,000 and rises rapidly after that.

So what's the suggested price for the Xbox 360 HD DVD player? "Stay tuned. We decided to save that good news for another day, but we're clearly out to make this an affordable option for Xbox 360 owners," said Penello.
Rumor has it that the HD-DVD add-on will be $100.00....can you feel that Sony?? Right up your delayed PS3 and Blu-Ray ass!

We'll see if it actually is 100.00 but it's a strong rumor so far and nothing else. with E3 next week, we'll know soon.

Well comparing it to the Toshiba is a little misleading as well. As was posted in the other thread, that's basically a P4 with a HD-DVD drive. The drive itself is really the cheap part. The 'controller' is what adds the cost. So basically it's $100 + the cost of the 360.

Although I'm sure that will still be much cheaper than PS3+BluRay.

(Of course this is merely my assumption based on no hard facts whatsoever)

That's probably pretty accurate Aslanna.

It's still cheap and available sooner than the PS3/Blu Ray Option. I'm curious what MS came up with as the design for the addon to make it look like it's part of the Xbox 360. (which I never liked in the first place)

The other news, which really isn't news, is that the PS3 isn't going to perform any better than the Xbox 360. The only reason this is news is that more people are leaking performance info now.

I think Sony has all sorts of issues going on right now with the online component of the PS3 vs X-Box Live, the actual size/heat issues with the current design of the PS3's box, still being in testing this close to the reported November launch (meaning they have a million units they still need to start making and haven't even settled on the final version yet)

It all adds up to Microsoft making a bigger dent that anticipated with both the console and HD-DVD battle...along with 2nd gen games being available for the Xbox before the PS3's initial batch are released.

yeah except the ps3 is going to launch with GOOD titles and they aren't going to rush their console out before their gay hd drive format is finished. i wouldn't be suprised if the ps3 laucnhes with more FUN games than then entire xbox 360 game library.

i really regret buying my 360, i've had fun with exactly two games and i'd hardly call anything they've released "next gen."

i'm still holding out for dead rising/ninety nine knights/gears of war and if those end up being the same overhyped unfun bs as the other games i've blown money on, then i'm turning my 360 into a space heater for those cold arizona nights.

If it was purely for gaming, then I'd have to agree that the PS3 would most likely trump the 360.

However with Windows Vista(build in media center) around the corner and the 360 acting an an extender, Live Anywhere, an HD-DVD addon, 360 is poised to take over in-home entertainment.

Count in the fact that by the time the PS3 launches, MS will most likely drop the price of the 360 or start bundling the HD-DVD drive with new units and still be under the price of the low-end PS3 is nothing short of genious.

This next dashboard upgrade looks like a good one. Background downloads were needed as well as multiple downloads.
Xbox Dashboard Update Confirmed for End May

We got confirmation from Boris Schneider-Johne (Senior Product Manager Xbox Platform and Accessories, Microsoft Germany) that a huge Dashboard Update will arrive at the end of May!

Features include background downloading and having multiple downloads at once.

The user marks a file to download and it will be put in an active queue downloadlist. There are 6 slots reserved in that queue. They will be downloaded sequentially not in parallel! If the Xbox360 sees there is bandwith available it will boost the download speed up. During online sessions the downloads will be paused to garantee no lags. It's also possible to turn off the console, after powering it back on the downloads will resume. When a download finishes the user will get a message that it has been downloaded.

He also mentions that there will be a lot more features in there but it will be a surprise and he won't talk about it!
