Top 1000 Songs, Top 880 80's Songs

Not being big into MP3 collecting, I wanted to find a core set of music to load onto my portable player for random play so I started checking out the newsgroups for MP3s. A lot of the collections I found were poorly tagged etc.

I did end up finding a pretty good top 1000 song collection from Veronica

It's a euro site so has a slight bias towards euro music but overall the collection seems pretty solid as top 1000's go (not the order of the rankings but as a whole). All of the songs are tagged correctly and recorded 192kbps 44khz.

For those that have giganews and a newsleecher or another means of finding the post, search for "veronica" and you'll find the .rar'd collection posted about 25 days ago on alt.binaries.nl complete w/pars (that group has 1 million + posts so a search engine like supersearch in Newsleecher helps a bunch. It's about 6gb in size.

I also grabbed the top 880 80's song collection from Veronica (192kbps, correctly tagged) which is also out there on the newsgroups.

Both are worth checking out if you have the means to get them! (mail a check for $1,880.00 to iTunes if you feel guilty)

OK, I had a chance to look and listen a little bit to the top 1000. It's more like the top 1000 slow songs. Still good, but not the best overall top 1000 for variety.

The top 880 80's collection is a little better.

How exactly does looking at a few videos on google compare to the theft of thousands of copywritten songs?

Since the majorty of those videos and the content of those videos have no trademark or copyright, any legal action brough forward on those who are rebroadcasting and/or hostimg them would never even make it to a court of law.

Flaunting that you intentionally and purposefully stole close to two thousand songs would probably result in a big fine and some jail time should anyone be motivated to persue legal action.

It's not a fucking high horse. It's called having respect for the law. And how does that make me naive?

I'm aware that millions of people are stealing shit on the internet every second of every day, but how exactly does that make it ok? People piss and moan about the quality of software, games, music, television, etc... but what the fuck do you expect when people like you are siphoning money out of the pockets of the people who publish and market it?

I have respect for the law.. To a certain extent. For example I speed yet I don't go around robbing stores and/or killing people. Yet both are against the law. So if someone can truly say they live a crimeless life, no matter how small the crime may be, they are hypocrites. However I'm sure miir is 100% compliant with the laws in his little corner of the world so the above does not apply to him.

I own hundreds of CDs and DVDs which were legally purchased. In addition to registering shareware I regularly use. However, I also download things to see if they're worth purchasing. Which isn't a justification but it isn''t meant to be.

The point is I don't subscribe to the "you spends your money you takes your chances" philosophy on things like this. If something is worthwhile I will purchase it. If not... I don't. Although I realize not everyone who downloads stuff will do the same even if they really like something.

Whether you agree or not I don't really care. This is just one of those issues where people on both sides already have their mind made up and no amount of debate will change it.

As far as the Emulation forum goes... File attachments are no longer enabled there. Same probably goes for the other forums here but I suppose that doesn't stop anyone from linking to something.

But, with the holy war crusade the RIAA is on, I simply do not want this board getting shut down because of some shit in this forum.

I don't care if you guys wanna pirate the library of congress in movies or any of the other mediae forums, just not here. It's very easy to use pm's and emails and im programs for file transfers, as opposed to doing it on a publicly accessible forum where anyone and everyone can read what you're doing.

If you guys don't find that acceptable, pm your administrators to have me removed or maybe you can have this forum locked and open your own tool forum or something.

As long as it's not hosted on the VV board server, which the stuff linked to in the first post isn't, I don't think they (RIAA) would/could do anything about it.

All I did in my first post was link a commercial website that lists their top 1000 songs.

I wonder how all those people that were listening to Tool got ahold of that music before it was released! Ban them!

My only real problem is that I have already purchased what I listen to for the most part. It sucks that I have hundreds of cassettes purchased already from when I actually used to give a shit about music, new or classic, and it's not able to be put into mp3 format. You can be sure, I am not repurchasing any of it. It's a good thing some car companies still can affix cassette decks w/in the dash and some of the folks I know have ripped some of the albums I already own so I can listen to them in mp3 format.

It's all relative. Using the Tool example above, yeah I stole it when it came out on the internet because I was eager to listen to it. I also went out and purchased the CD as soon as it was available for me to do so. The record label got their money and I got to enjoy a piece of art that I'd been anticipating for five years a couple weeks early.

On the scale of moral relativism, is that worse than driving a 1000lb piece of steel 5 mph over the speed limit on the highway? What about 20 mph over in a school zone?

I think you could make a case for either being worse than the other depending on the circumstances. Speeding to the point of reckless driving is worse, in my mind, than someone downloading a Kajagoogoo song that they never would have paid for in the first place. Conversely, bilking some poor old man out of his retirement fund is worse than going 56 in a 55.

Speeding and theft are both bad, and if you're looking to be sainted you should probably avoid the both of them. And perform three miracles.

There's a HUGE posting on the newgroups of the top 1000 albums.

It's about a 140GB download though for the 1000 albums. You can get them in 14GB 100 album chunks though! nice 192kbs tracks.

I doubt I'll download this but it's quite an amazing compilation.

I see six U2 albums in the top 100...seems a bit much! No Led Zeppelin in the top 100? CODA has to be there!

I started bolding the albums that shouldn't be on a top 5000 list but had to give up. Jesus, who did this pile of crap? What, 3 Bon Jovi albums - as many as The Beatles and Stones? Marillion in 23rd place? I also have a huge problem with compilations being on any 'greatest' list that isn't 'greatest compilation'.

Whoever did this list deserves to spend eternity on an island with only Mel Tormé and Milli Vanilli as company.

Compilatons being on a list is dumb. Also any sort of 'Greatest Hits' or 'Best Of' should immediately be stricken from the record.
