IRS bitchslaps PayPal

Post by cadalano »

http://www.rte.ie/business/2006/0413/ebay.html

in short:

IRS wants details on any PayPal accounts linked to banks or credit cards in specific countries to track tax naughtiness done through offshore accounts.

Will PayPal fold?

This should be an interesting legal battle between intrusive government and privacy advocates. I really hope the government fails in this case because I think it is a matter of personal privacy.

The biggest issue I have with this is that they are targetting countries which would normally limit their access. Paypal has been a tinderkeg waiting to blow for a while now though.

The whole deal with not paying taxes on internet purchases out of state (if company has no representation in your state) has got to be an major issue as well.

the IRS obviously has enough proof that people are cheating on their taxes using paypal. how can they not demand access? privacy has nothing to do with it when people are breaking the law.

Because cheating the government on taxes has to do with personal privacy? Please explain your logic on why people should be able to break the law.

Maybe the police will have to stop investigating criminals because it is an invasion of their privacy.
