Did I just break my hand?

Post by Tyek1 »

We have unusually cold weather here this week, as a result my crutches slipped on ice and I hit the ground hard, my palm swelled up and is painful to touch which sucks since I am on crutches.

I am just icing it and I can move the fingers, but it is painful to touch the palm area. I did not want to waste a day at the emergency room, I spent a whole day at the hospital this week because they thought I had blood clots from the surgery and I found out I have bronchitis, so I am doctored out. I was hoping to hang on until Monday when I can see my doctor. So the question is has anyone broken their hand before? were they able to use it? I am grabbing the crutches in a strange way to avoid most of tthe pain and the painkillers from my knee surgery help, but any imput is appreciated. I hope it is just a bone bruise, but I don't know it swelled up pretty badly.

Thanks and yes I am having a bad start to the year. I also need my damn account password reset so I can use my real profile.

Any crunchy noises or grating when you flex or stretch your hand? If not then you probably just broke some capillaries and have a lot of fluid in thte tissue especally common if you are taking an anti-clotting med which it sounds like you may be/might have been recently...

As a general rule if there is no grating and no broad loss of sensation, it'll take care of itself...just keep flexing it and apply ice for the swelling...

Take Bourbon as necessary for pain relief :)

Is the booze really a good idea? I thought that dilated capilaries and hence increased bleeding....

Cotton balls with whiskey in the armpits!

From what you explain it doesn't sound like a broken hand.
Hope it's ok!

Stop being a baby and go to the doctor. If it is broken you want it taken care of or your hand could be messed up later on.

No crunchy noises. The ice is helping dramatically. Thanks for the imput, I see my doctor tomorrow for my knee anyway so I will have it looked at for sure then. Aslanna I am not being a baby about going to the doctor, In the last 7 weeks I have spent more time in doctors offices then I bet most of this board combined, so I figured why waste a ton of hours in emergency offices where a possible broken hand would be last on the priority list. I am justing holding out til tomorrow.

On top of that I am sick of the hosipital. After my surgery they like you to stay in the room for 3-4 days. They stuck me with a guy who had insomnia and kept me awake for 2 days, despite my complaining they did not move either of us so I went home after 2 days and gutted it out at home. Then I spent 12 hours in the hosital this week to get an xray, ultrasound and have some radioactive shit injected in me to see if I had blood clots so I would just rather wait for a few days to see my doctor get a xray in 10-15 minutes and find out that way.

When I broke my hand, there was no crunch and I could still move my fingers. It all depends on where the break is.

Oh yeah you can definitely have a break w/o crepitance. But hands and feet break and reheal fine a lot of the time with no intervention. Crunchy/Nerve Damage/Immobility after icing are pretty much my personal thresholds for emergency treatment.
I was hoping to hang on until Monday when I can see my doctor.
I'd always rather have an orthopaed or an orthopaedic neurologist look at any break as opposed to an ER Doc.

oh trust me. any ER physician worth his salt is going to refer you to an orthodoc so they can all feed at the insurance trough.

On the subject of healthcare cost madness, one of my co-workers had some chest pains so they called 911. It turned out to be nothing but they held him in the hospital for two days.

Cost for bad gas (or whatever) $16,000

and that doesn't include the paramedics yet which will be at leat 4K or more.

The bill for the knee surgery I had is up to $52,000 so far. I got charged 75 dollars for a sponge that my wife requested so she could give me a sponge bath. If I had known it cost 75 dollars, I might have told her to bring it home so we could use it again.

oh and Stragi, I promise next time to check with you on anything I might post in terms of questions. I know you have never posted anything here unworthy of responding too.

I hope your co-worker is passing the cost back to "they".

Two decembers ago I went to my doctor with some swelling in my right leg. He got concerned that it might be a blood clot so he sent me down for a sonigram. Unfortunately it was two days before christmas and the normal technicians had taken off for the day so I had to go through the emergency room one. I expressed concern since my insurance wasnt that good, the doc assured me it wouldnt cost anymore than seeing a regular technician.

While I was waiting my turn an emergency room doctor came by and asked how I was doing, thats it.

I recieved a bill from her for 250.00.

I love our health care system.

For the record, it was a sprained wrist and I bruised the palm badly. So I guess I lucked out, makes it a bitch to use crutches though.
