DVI to HDMI

i'm trying to hook up my PC to my TV via a DVI->HDMI converter. i'm not getting any signal, and i have it on the resolution as specified by the manufacturer. anyone have any tips/hints/problems with this?

the HDMI input works fine with my DVD player. my tv is the 50" sony sxrd rear projection (KDS-R50XBR1).

i'd appreciate any help, i'm very sad.

How long is your cable? If it's more than 10', that may be the problem.

Other than that, what video card are you using? There are several settings you can check depending on if you're using nVidia or ATi. NVidia has HDTV mode to make things easier now.

It can be a pain in the ass, especially with older video cards. I'd reccomend looking up and getting powerstrip as it can help you figure out vsynch and the like. Also look around on HTPC forums and general google searches for "Your video card + your tv"

If it seems like after getting that going it's more trouble than it's worth, it probably is. My ati 9800 was a pain in the ass, and I could only run at low resolutions, or high resolutions with huge amounts of overscanning desynching even with pstrip.

When i got my 6800 it hooked in, set it to 1080i, worked like a champ with no special settings at all.

I havent tried that with any of the SXRD's yet... AVSforum might be the best source.

Ill see if I can find anything, but work is keeping me pretty busy right now.

did you try it without the converter? a lot of new tv's HDMI input will also convert dvi straight from the source. my LG DLP and my samsung plasma both convert straight from DVI into the HDMI port.

Kyo, it sounds like she is talking about the converter from the 68 pin DVI connector to the 128pin HDMI connector(smaller of the two).

There might be some settings in the TV setup that you have to change for it to recognize DVI-D PC Signals.

Im on a fucking mission not to finish all this work infront of me...

Just downloaded all of the tech resources on my sony dealer site.... the manual only mentions using the VGA connection on the back of the TV for PC display...

Im gonna bet that sony has PC DVI input disabled and there are service menu settings that have to be enabled to allow it to work if you cant make it work on the HDMI.

Also, do you have another monitor and vid card to use in the PC for dual display while you are setting it up? Might be you keep choosing incompatable resolutions...

the converter is the DVI to HDMI part... i just have an HDMI cable. it might be that it's too long, it's 4m. thanks for the tips, i'll try them out tonight (last night was mardi gras).

There's a good chance it could be the cable. I originally tried a 15' DVI cable and had all sorts of issues. (sparkles, etc). Switching to a 3M cable, after reading up on all the long cable issues online, did the trick. You may also try using DVI cable and converting to HDMI as opposed to HDMI with DVI converter.

It's hard to say though. It may just be a setting in the video drivers. I recall with my old ATi card, I have to reboot my PC with my projector already on for it to be recognized. With nVidia's drivers, I didn't have to reboot for detection.

i got it set up last night and it looks really freaking hot, with the exception of the overscan problem. the tv has settings to adjust it, but only with +1 and +2 settings, so it just makes it worse.

i can compensate for the vertical scan so that it's not an issue, but i can't fix the horizontal part. i'm using powerscan 3.6, and the display just goes blank when i try to adjust it. any ideas?

Both current ATi and nVidia drivers should have overscan adjustments in the advanced settings tabs.

finally got it set up last night! i decided to forego the powerstrip stuff, and went strictly with the ATI drivers. i was able to get it set up, and then tweaked the resolution a little bit to compensate for the overscan problem. after that, it was underscanning, but the overscan function on the tv took care of that. now it's dead sexy... thanks for the help guys!
