I can't speak for EQ2, but I still have nightmares about the Luclin models/armor in EQ1. It was really very disapointing how some of the armor was really very good, most of the plate in particular I thought was very well done, but others like chainmail and the wood elf males in particular were just godawful. This is not specific to EQ1 only, WoW has some really shitty armor too but I'll never forget the horror that was my male wood elf ranger in EQ1 when I first turned on SoL.

Sadly, I feel the luclin armor had more style and feel to them than the drab EQ2 armors.Breagen wrote:I can't speak for EQ2, but I still have nightmares about the Luclin models/armor in EQ1. Exactly.Gabe of PA wrote:I figured since it was free I’d give EQ II a shot yesterday. Tycho’s right about my take on the game. I found it nearly impossible to get past the visuals. The entire game looks like it was made using Poser and Bryce 3D. Actually some of that Poser art looks better than the shit I saw in EQ. It feels like it was all put together by computers and algorithms rather than artists. It is a world designed by math rather than imagination. There is no evidence of style in any of the characters or environments I saw. We were all talking about the game yesterday and the best word we could come up with to describe it was “sterile”. It is completely without life. There is no love or care given to any piece of it. The entire thing was made by robots in a vacuum.
I know there must be artists working at SOE. The only thing I can think of is that they are simply cogs in some corporate machine. They must be given no freedom at all. In fact after looking at the game I wouldn’t be surprised if they are beaten daily. Their spirits have been broken. The troll models specifically may even be some kind of internal attempt to destroy the game and strike a blow against their corporate masters.
What kills me in WoW (aside from shit like the Wrath Axehead accents) is the abortions they call weapons. Things like the Bloodlord's Defender ( http://www.thottbot.com/?i=51416 ) make me want to puke. I mean thats supposed to be a sword? it looks more like a piece of scrap plate from my father's welding shop, that he's had to cut various chunks from.
Wanting to keep a certain feel is one thing but FFS lets make this shit at least identifiable by more than the accompanying description. I didn't like some of the shit EQ did with weapons either but at least you knew what the fuck things were...

The best looking weapons in WoW are like level 40 blues. Once you get past 50, pretty much everything is ridiculously oversized, and so misshapen as to be unrecognizable.
Armor... is just bad. The new shit from ZG looks like it was drawn by a 5 year old with the only the 16 color box of crayons.

He should've at least gotten past the intro island before commenting on this stuff.
Here's a whole thread about the Gabe thing so I won't comment any further.

The character models. . .*shrug* To each his own I guess.
Other than the character models and some mobs, I find the world just beautiful.
i.e. Arguably the most important art assets in an MMO fantasy game.
Gabe is spot on. You are as well - the scenery in EQ2 is generally very nice. It's the poorly animated and textured characters and creatures that look like they were cut out of a magazine and stuck to the screen afterwards that suck balls.
EQ2 represents an utter failure of Art Direction. Individually there are some nice pieces of work. When you put it all together it looks bloody awful.
Edit: I played to level 41, FYI. Also note: I make no comparitive judgement re: WoW art
I can understand some 'imaginative' design when it comes to armor because it turns out well sometimes and it is nice to not just have everyone in the same gray plate/chain armor.
For weapons however, I really prefer the low level simple designs in games. I just really hate the ridiculous looking weapons that no one could possibly wield effectively. Daggers seem to be the only item that is generally not retarded looking in all games because there really isn't too much you can do to them before they aren't a dagger anymore. The new stuff in WoW is just fucking horrible, if it's not placeholder I won't be equiping any of that crap =/

The sad thing about some of the top end WoW weapons is they started as decent looking unique models and got changed to ridiculous ones later, ie Perdition's Blade pre-1.8/post1.8
