Subscription Free - "Fodder Program"
New Players will be able to create a new account and and play for free for a period of 12 months. The new account will have limitations on the BattleRank (+ or - BR8) and the CommandRank (+ or - CR2). Essentially, new players will be able to have access to any part of the game but they will be limited on the diversity of their arsenal. Time Frame – We are shooting for February 14th for Launch.
The montly subscription still exists, if you want to advance beyond rank 8.
Furthermore, there's a bunch of other interesting changes in that thread that previous players may want to check out.
I still play occasionally. I enjoy it for about 1-2 hours. It's not something I could invest a tremendous amount of time in, but it serves to satisfy my need for PVP.
How long does it take for someone to get Rank 6? what does that symbolize? Are they just letting people in so that the higher rank players can have thinking targets?

Gaining ranks gets you certification points to spend on weapon, armor, or vehicle skills. You can unlearn one skill per 24 hours, so you aren't stuck with any build for longer than a few days or so. The higher ranks just mean more toys and cooler looking armor (different paint schemes at higher ranks).

Just read the first post in that thread, and I am shocked that they plan on trying to work in that many changes. They had some posts up last Fall asking for feedback as well as polls for various things to implement. It sounds like they are actually considering many of them. I didn't see anything there about deleting VS from the game though

In the first week, there's no limit to recertifications.
You could hit BR 8 in a night if you tried at all. I guess the one good thing is you could make several BR 8 characters with different builds and just log in the one you want.
The changes they are going to put in is what really makes things interesting.
I've been playing for the past month, they reactivated my account 3 weeks ago. I think I am free up till the 10th of Feb.
Anyway...
The recert time is now 6 hours, used to be 24. The game requires Core Combat if you want to use the caverns or Battle Frame Robotics Technology.
The game lands are different now too, I remember it used to be 3-4 continents were always raging, now it is almost always a three way gangbang on 2 continents. You have to out think the other 2 armies if you want to force them both off, this is done by chokepointing via key bases, and tower controlling.
I played up until the LLU thing went in (the capture base by running the lattice logic unit) to the next adjoining base. Since then they have merged servers, broke up the larger contients and make some smaller battle areas.
Bases seem to be worth something now, since you gain benefits from them, locking a continent also gives your whole empire a benefit. Once you lock, you do not LOSE the lock until you lost your LAST base on that continent. So defending is WORTH it, unlike before.
Quite a few more vehicles, much more diverse now.
The bad things now, compared to when I played in its heyday... is that after nearly 3 years of being around, Planetside seems a bit "topped out". The battle rank max is now 25, was 20. Command Rank used to be limited to those in large organized outfits (guilds), who selected key leaders to lead squads into battle and were the CR5 commanders to organize the empire.
Now it seems 50% of the players have command rank 4-5 and you feel the effects of this by the absurd number of "orbital strikes", which make AMS stations useless... you have 75% of the players with CR3, which allows them to EMP bases/towers and render a combat engineer mine work and spitfires useless.
The allowing of new players to come in though, I think is a good thing. It gives more fodder to the fight. Those players will not be able to Orbital Strike, EMP, or will not have the diversity of flying in a reaver, blasting the shit out of your AMS, ejecting over you, advance hacking your tower, running downstairs and grabbing his Mini Chaingun and mowing down everyone but a MAX, getting killed, then respawning as a Pounder MAX and coming up the stairs spamming nades on the terminal and killing the counter hacker.
The BR6-8 limit will be good for FREE. The player will have to choose his build, either airpower with no weapons or MAX, a cloaking hacker, a medic, a combat engineer, etc... no more of the 1 character that can do everything. It will bring back more teamwork to the game, instead of everyone being able to do it all themselves.
I have a BR21 CR3 and a BR19 CR2 characters on Emerald. Scar and HELScar. I may pay another month just to see how the game flows with new players.
I probably gave you virtual items once upon a time...
Some of the best things may not be in for a bit yet. Probably longer than a month. I am probably going to re-up for 3 months just to see how their new features will go. I am really looking forward to seeing the changes to turrets and placeable turrets....the tank stopping blocks.....the Air to Air Mosq rockets (thank God something to help knock down the amount of Liberators).
Still have Br 20 Cr 3 Kilmoll as TR on Markov....and have been playing KilmollNC Br 13 for the last couple weeks.
