I'm posting this here but I'm wondering if posting this in General would get more attention.
Denmark is really getting the brunt of the Muslim reaction to the printing (and reprinting) of the caricatures depicting Muhammad though dozens of papers in other countries have decided to reprint them for a number of reasons. A few Middle Eastern countries have decided to pressure the Danish government and try to bully them into apologizing by boycotting Danish products and hitting them where it counts - their wallets. This is resulting in what experts predict will be an 800 million dollar loss (I think that's the correct number - Drolgin will correct me if I'm wrong) in the import/export industry. Hundreds of Danes have already lost their jobs because of this and if nothing is resolved soon, I'm sure hundreds more will.
I know most of us are outraged at the Muslim reaction and their ridiculous demands. In support of Denmark and their stance that freedom of press is an integral part of democracy, I'm hoping we are all willing to put our money where our mouth is by buying Danish products.
I'm listing a few Danish products I know are available in the US and am going to do some research when I have more energy to add more to the list. Please feel free to add any Danish product you know of:
Carlsberg and Tuborg Beers. (You’d be doing yourself a favor here)
Lurpak butter and dairy products
White Clover and Holland Farm brands (also owned by Arla)
Danish Crown (DAK) ham and bacon (sold at Costco)
Tulip bacon
Lego
Bang & Olufsen audio and video equipment
Haribo candy (I'd stay away from the salty licorice)
Larsen strings for bowed instruments
You'll also find tons of Danish cheeses (havarti, danish blue, feta, etc), jams and breads in your local grocery stores.

I have to say that I'm deeply disappointed with the rhetoric used by the US state department. Yes, I did not (fully) agree with the printing of the cartoons, or at least the rationale behind the printing of them, but Denmark has been an ally of the US for as long as anyone can remember. Our current administration backed the 'efforts' in Iraq and Afghanistan, we've followed the US through thick and thin - and now, because the US is terrified of pissing more people off in the middle east, we get scolded by our big brother?
It would've looked a lot more honest had the state department said 'This is an internal Danish matter. Whether or not this administration disagrees with the practices of a privately owned Danish newspaper is insignificant. We hope that the parties involved can reach a resolution and we would be happy to assist in mediating in any which way we can.' instead of this kneejerk 'OH NO CANNOT INSULT PEOPLE WE ARE ALIENATING ALREADY' crap.
Ok, off my soapbox for a second.
Financially, Denmark *is* being hit hard.
Approximate figures on lost exports:
Saudi Arabia: $340 million
Kuwait: $86 million
Qatar: $21 million
UAE: $225 million
Egypt: $113 million
Bahrain: $20 million
Syria: $28 million
Yemen: $37 million
Libya: $18 million
Jordan: $42 million
Algeria: $72 million
Tunesia: $31 million
Lebanon: $58 million
Oman: $40 million
Sudan: $19 million
Iraq: $54 million
Iran: $206 million
This comes out to about $1.41 billion/year - or roughly $260 per Danish citizen per year. That's real money. The estimates may be way off, I don't know, they're from a semi-reputable source (Danish newspaper Berlingske Tidende) but who knows how sensationalist they decide to be. The worst thing, financially, is that the likely hood of these markets recovering is slim to none. Arla (the dairy company) had a strong position which it will never regain, and the 140 people will not get their job back. And I don't believe those 140 fired are the last.
At least one good thing came of this. Garfield is finally funny!

There seems to be a bit of a 'movement' with this whole Buy Danish thing: several bloggers and online columnists have taken it on as their newest pet cause. Google shows a ton of links just from a simple search.
Now, I don't want to seem ungrateful, but a lot of these people seem to be doing it for the entirely wrong reasons. Yes, I believe Denmark should have the support of all democracies in this matter. Yes, it bothers me that we are being targetted financially (but hell, it's a better way of voicing your dissent than planting bombs). But no, I do not want to become a cause for the right wingers who actually don't really care all that much about the crux of the matter, free speech, but just want to stick it to the muslims. Most of the sites I've looked at are hardcore pro-israel and anti-arab, and while the enemy of my enemy may be my friend, the arab nations are not my enemies.
EDIT: Please note - I know for a fact that this was not the intent of Laneela in posting this, her intentions were what I consider the right ones, ie. counteracting a protest that hurts the innocents by supporting them. At first I was in full support of the idea, and I know this was where Laneela was coming from too, but now I'm leary because of opportunists jumping on to this so they can yell more about the evil muslims.
I have my doubts about the Islamic religious establishments being willing to do what is needed, however. By all accounts, they've been more concerned with spreading misinformation and inciting riots than defusing the issue or indeed reporting, factually, the conversations between them and the Danish diplomats.

I'm such a good friend I think I'll head to Washington and burn your embassy right after I arrange a boycott of all your products. (ps That was sarcasm, just so you know.)Drolgin Steingrinder wrote:the arab nations are not my enemies
Let me put it another way. The history of human civilization is filled with incidents where societies were forced to make decisions. The history books were not written by those cultures that dropped their pants and bent over.
I'm buying stock in European companies that make short caskets. Headless corpses don't need standard size ones. They park the head down between the feet... if they can find it.

How is not wanting to be lumped in with rabid zionist right-wingers who seem to prefer the middle east look like what Kwon posted on the other threat, a huge glass crater 'dropping pants and bending over' ? All I am saying is that I would love a counter movement to the boycott but I want it for the right fucking reasons. Voice your opinion because it's a matter of free speech. Don't turn it into your petty hate against muslims.Metanis wrote:I'm such a good friend I think I'll head to Washington and burn your embassy right after I arrange a boycott of all your products. And you sir, are going to hell.I'm buying stock in European companies that make short caskets. Headless corpses don't need standard size ones. My intentions (as you know) are definately to support Denmark for standing behind their constitution and the rights to free speech/press and to support the people being affected by cultural and political misunderstandings. I hate the thought of people losing their jobs and families being affected and I figured that instead of sitting on my ass and posting how ridiculous people (on both sides) are being, I would do one of the only things I can think of to do to help and was hoping to incite people who felt the same way I do to do the same thing. It disgusts me to think that people (again, on both sides) are exploiting this and using it as a tool for their hate agendas.
I don't think your post seemed ungrateful at all. You're not saying "no thanks" to the people honestly trying to help. I don't think anyone could blame you for not wanting people to use your country's circumstances as a self-serving way to "stick it to the muslims".
I'm going to continue buying Danish products (except for the salty licorice) and I hope people who honestly want to support Denmark and their stance that not wanting to offend peoples' sensibilities is not above a person's right to speak their mind will do also do so.

No, I just want to be able to read a thread that has nothing to do with religion and be able to keep it that way. Who is she to tell him he is going to hell? Thats the kind of shit that makes me dislike religion more and more, and it doesnt just bother me here, it bothers me when it happens anywhere, and I voice my same opinion whether someone here says it, or I pass by someone saying something stupid like that on the sidewalk.
First of all good sir, while I am in possession of boobs, they are, quite sadly, man boobs, i also have a penis. I believe my post may have been taken the wrong way by you, and so I shall explain.
I am not religious, I do not believe there is a fiery underworld ruled by the damned, nor a perfectly gorgeous place ruled by a man in a white robe with a beard. My statement "you sir, are going to hell" was meant in the sense of "you should be ashmed, mocking those who could quite possibly die in a horrible way due ot these circumstances." However my humor (twisted tho it may be) does not conform to this.

It's about crazy ass muslims, not about christian ideals. And if he wasnt saying it in that way, then I apologized in advance. And yes, I have a really preachy friend that has told me im going to hell because I don't believe in god, and I told him if he wanted to continue to be friends with me and see me, I never wanted to hear another religious word out of his mouth, and I didnt.
If you wanna continue to be friends with us and see us, I don't wanna hear another stupid thing come out of your mouth.
Let's see how that works.

Please Please PLEASE get your shit straight before you post again. You might be "trying" to be kinder and nicer Funk now, but you are letting the dumbass idiot Funk come out to play. We would rather see neither. You said you wanted a thread without religion, but you come to a thread which is entirely based on a religious situation. Then you say that it's about Muslims rather than Christians.....Go back to school. First of all, this has very much to do with Christian ideals as well. The whole situation is bringing otu the fanatics on both sides and they both keep fanning the flames. I'm being strictly argumentative here, Denmark has been one of the most helpful of our friends next to GB and Poland, and 206 mil isn't a whole hell of a lot of money in the big picture but there were only two countries on the list you quoted that had more business with Denmark than Iran.

First off, the thread as it was in its first post had little or nothing to do with any religion or any set of ideals other than the muslims.Boogahz wrote:kyoukan wrote:this thread has nothing to do with religion? is that a joke or are you some kind of fucking retard?Funkmasterr wrote:No, I just want to be able to read a thread that has nothing to do with religion and be able to keep it that way. Maybe they will teach you something about the world that the "tough" streets can't.Funkmasterr wrote:It's about crazy ass muslims, not about christian ideals.
I dont care about, nor do I want to hear anyones pointless and retarded observations about christian reaction to it, or other similar situations going on at the time, or how they are just as much of a problem.
Also, for the america haters that jumped on the bandwagon of the "white house" saying they didnt approve of this drawing, it was someone in the state department that really wasnt supposed to even open their mouth, so there goes that idea.
This situation is about nut job muslims and the entire worlds need to get them under control, this did not start because of christianity, it was because of a cartoon, and the christian reaction to it is irrelevant and had nothing to do with how the muslims reacted. The problems we have here in the states with nut job christians pale in comparison and in my mind arent a priority.
And I was speaking to 1 person no one else. I misunderstood him and apologized in advance if I took what he was saying wrong. This was not an invitation for anyone else to make their moronic commentary. I know what im talking about, and I dont need a halfwit like you telling me to "go back to school" , blow me.

Obviously you need to go back to intarweb school. PM's are Private Messages. They are what you use when you want to send something to one person without letting the rest of the "board population" read it and respond. I am assuming your idiotic commentary in all threads are supposed to be PMs...Funkmasterr wrote:And I was speaking to 1 person no one else. The point of this thread was to have people "buy Danish" because of the Muslim boycotts of all things Danish. See the second full sentence in the first post. It breaks the reasons down for you a little better if you read the rest of that "paragraph" as well. See, the Danish papers printed something that Muslims, in general, and the radical immams (sp?), in particular, did not like. This means religious people. Christianity is not the only religion in the world *gasp*.
Learn to do a little math, reading, and maybe even hit 'Preview' instead of 'Submit' in the future. You could at least save face if nothing else. You continue to say the same thing over and over about how you don't/won't let people on a message board get to you, etc.....then you post idiotic drivel and "act a fool" repeatedly.

The only thing I have to add is that the reason maybe I get irritated.. Is that I could think of a million better things to do with my time besides irritating someone on purpose to get a reaction of a fucking message board, I actually find it pathetic that so many of you seem to get enjoyment out of it, really pathetic.
I am also able to realize the difference between me disagreeing with someone ( no matter how strong or mild) and disregarding what they say or calling it stupid, which is something a whole lot of people here also don't seem to be able to grasp.

It is like you are a highly advanced robot programmed to not get things.Funkmasterr wrote:First off, the thread as it was in its first post had little or nothing to do with any religion or any set of ideals other than the muslims.
Oh well, I've never met a smart racist. I suppose I shouldn't be amazed.
