Fuck these assholes and their agendas. This year will be the year of the gay cowboys just like a couple years back it was the year of the black lead actors/actress.

I remember when I was younger thinking these awards actually tried to award those deserving of them, inctead of just pushing agendas.

Very sad.

Where's the SERENITY nominations?? I'm pretty sure that Wash was bisexual. That's got to be worth something!

Maybe GEISHA will win a few.

I think Serenity was only a godlike movie for people who have seen the series. To everyone else it was just a pretty decent movie.

Just to make sure I'm following.. But what agenda are they pushing this year? Just how many "gay cowboy" movies have been nominated? And have you actually saw the movie and can say that it wasn't deserving of the categories in which it was nominated?

I completely disagree. I haven't seen Brokeback Mountain or Capote yet, but I'd rank it above Good Night and Good Luck or Munich in a heartbeat. Crash was a great film with excellent acting by almost every actor/actress in it.

I thought Serenity was horrible. I was always thinking that the power rangers were going to pop out and start fighting at any point in the film.

Time for the guesses/tips:

PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE
Ledger or Phoenix will win it. I think Brokeback Mountain will get the majority of the awards, sadly. Tough luck for PS Hoffman to finally get a major leading role and have it in a year with two such clear favorites.

PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
This one is pretty open to me, the only one I'd rule out is Matt Dillon. If I were fair I'd say that Clooney and Hurt edge a bit in front of the others, but my heart says Paul Giamatti even if it was far from his best part ever.

PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE
Reese Witherspoon. I hate her. But she's good.

PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
No real opinion.

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM OF THE YEAR
Wallace and Gromit all the way

ACHIEVEMENT IN ART DIRECTION
Better *not* be Harry Potter or King Kong is all I can say.

ACHIEVEMENT IN CINEMATOGRAPHY
Brokeback Mountain or Memoirs... although BB was gorgeous too.

ACHIEVEMENT IN COSTUME DESIGN
Hi Mr. Wonka!

ACHIEVEMENT IN DIRECTING

Would be pretty hardcore if Bennett Miller won it, Capote is only his second feature film. I'm guessing Brokeback Mountain though, or possibly (with the academy's general hardon for Spielberg,) Munich.

BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
I've only seen 3 - Enron, Murderball and March of... - all were amazing. No idea.

BEST DOCUMENTARY SHORT SUBJECT
ACHIEVEMENT IN FILM EDITING
No clue.

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM OF THE YEAR
Fuck'em. Adams Apples wasn't nominated, so screw this category.

ACHIEVEMENT IN MAKEUP
I'm guessing Narnia.

ACHIEVEMENT IN MUSIC WRITTEN FOR MOTION PICTURES (ORIGINAL SCORE)

No opinion yet, will check in when I've paid more attention.

ACHIEVEMENT IN MUSIC WRITTEN FOR MOTION PICTURES
(ORIGINAL SONG)
Same deal.

BEST MOTION PICTURE OF THE YEAR
Brokeback Mountain will win it. Is it be the best of the 5? I'm not so sure.

and I can't be arsed to look at the rest right now.

Midnyte, have you seen the movie? Or have you formed your opinion on this solely because there are gasp! gay people in it?

It's not a matter of a trend - one movie does not make a trend. Can you lend your mind to the possibility that this just might be a genuinely good piece of cinema and thus deserves recognition, or are you so offended by these horrible horrible gay people invading your home and practically raping you by gasp! again! mere dint of their existence on the silver screen?

It's the 21st fucking century. Open your mind just a tiny bit, realize that there are other ways to live your life than just yours and accept that quite possibly, these other lifestyles also have interesting stories to tell.

Or don't. I really don't give a shit.

Crash was an excellent movie.

Nothing about Serenity was worth of an Oscar nomination.

I LOVE Serenity. I thought it was a great movie. It had some notable flaws, but it was a better value for your $8-10 than most movies are.

That said, anyone who's using the word Serenity and Oscar nomination in the same sentence really needs to check themselves. Serenity is great, Firefly was awesome, but lets not lose our fucking minds over it.

Good time at the theater != Oscar contender.

Serenity was a 40M movie made for the fans. I'm pretty positive that Joss didn't make this movie to win oscars.

Notice that SW:Ep3 didn't make any of the categories either.

Hmmm, Heath Ledger in head role, and Jack Gyllenhaal as supporting role.
How did they decide who got which one? Whoever took it was supporting? :)-

Havent seen Brokeback Mountain yet, not a movie ill go to the theater to see, but ill look forward to it on DVD.

I didn't mean to have a huge discussion on Serenity's merits. It's not an award winning movie in any category except for entertainment value.

I haven't seen most of this year's movies up for awards.

If "Gay Cowboys Eating Pudding" beats Walk the Line or Capote, there is no justice in the world. Heath Ledger doesn't even deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Joaquin or P.H.S., and aside of the OMGAY factor, Brokeback isn't even close in quality to those biodramas.

On a side note, I'd like to thank the little indy theatre that opened downtown last year for enabling me to actually see these movies!

Ooooh, I like Drolgin's game!

PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE
Heath Ledger - BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN
My money's is on the gay cowboy though Joaquin might have a fighting chance in hell.

PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
George Clooney - SYRIANA
I believe George Clooney hasn't won an Oscar yet and the academy will prolly feel he's due. I haven't seen Syriana but Clooney did win the Golden Globes so I'm sure his performance was worthy.

PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE
Felicity Huffman - TRANSAMERICA
With Reese as a possible second.

PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Michelle Williams - BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN
I have no educated guesses here so I'm going with Brokeback.

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM OF THE YEAR
TIM BURTON'S CORPSE BRIDE
Nightmare was nominated for an Academy Award or two and didn't win - and Corpse Bride has better animation. Curse of the Were-Rabbit was absolute brilliance though.

ACHIEVEMENT IN ART DIRECTION
PRIDE & PREJUDICE

ACHIEVEMENT IN CINEMATOGRAPHY
MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA

ACHIEVEMENT IN COSTUME DESIGN
I'd like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to win, but I have a feeling Memoirs of a Geisha will win it.

ACHIEVEMENT IN DIRECTING
BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN

BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
MARCH OF THE PENGUINS

BEST DOCUMENTARY SHORT SUBJECT
GOD SLEEPS IN RWANDA

ACHIEVEMENT IN FILM EDITING
WALK THE LINE

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM OF THE YEAR

No guesses here.

ACHIEVEMENT IN MUSIC WRITTEN FOR MOTION PICTURES
No clue.

ACHIEVEMENT IN MUSIC WRITTEN FOR MOTION PICTURES
(ORIGINAL SONG)
"In the Deep" - CRASH

BEST MOTION PICTURE OF THE YEAR
BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN

BEST ANIMATED SHORT FILM
ONE MAN BAND

BEST LIVE ACTION SHORT FILM
No guesses

ACHIEVEMENT IN SOUND EDITING
KING KONG

ACHIEVEMENT IN SOUND MIXING

I liked Brokeback Mountain. However, if it wins for Best Picture, I think it'll more likely be because it's more of a groundbreaking film than because it was a truely awesome movie. Sorta like "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner". I know that one didn't win, but it did get nominated. :)

Edit:
Oh, and as for best supporting actor, I'll bet on Paul Giamatti. They've passed him over enough times. :)

I thought Crash was so dull, and made it's point in the first 10 minutes, then just repeated itself until the end (like my posts here ! 8) !)

Hope Joaquin Penix wins best actor, his performance in Walk the line was immense.

uhh, it's midnyte. if anything remotely homosexual is associated with something, it automatically becomes a massive gay orgy full of hedonistic predators trying to lure his children into their faggot drug parties.

I don't really care who wins what as long as william hurt wins for history of violence. which he won't. I honestly can't even think of another decent movie this year. they were all shit, except for maybe ep3.

Ok, not completely fair to Crash as it covered the basics of camera work and had a mostly good cast. However, most of us know quite well about racism and violence already without Hollywood shoving this contrived script down our throats.

Sure, they drew inside the lines and didn't get any mustard on the paper, but it was plain 'ol dull. As I watched the story unfold, I was like 'ok, this is not too terrible', then it ended and I felt empty and cheated from 2 hours that could have been spent watching something more intelligent, like Big Momma's House 2 starring martin lawrence.

I'll be cheering on Memoirs of a Geisha in all of the artistic categories that it is up for. I was pleasantly surprised by this movie in general, but my first thought about it when leaving the theatre was how beautiful the sets, costumes, makeup, etc. were.

Way off topic, but you made me think of something I heard on Sirius last night that stunned and confused me at the same time.

The guys hosting the show.. I can't remember the names, were ranting about how they were so sick of the "coonery" that actors like martin do constantly. They went as far to say that Eddie Murphy, Richard Prior (sp?), Red Fox and a few others were all people that constantly did "coonery" and "yes massa" type roles.

It struck me as overly ignorant. I see what they were saying, but I guess I don't see any truth in the statement. The movies these guys have done are comedies, they make fools of themselves and thats the point of a comedy, it isnt them doing what the "white man" wants to see.. Unless Im missing some huge underlaying evil scheme.

It was just odd to hear very liberal black guys saying this kind of shit..

Wouldn't it be a bit difficult to bench press without thumbs?

No, it's actually quite possible, just takes a different sort of grip. Plenty of people do it at my gym without using the thumb in an opposble way.

I thought Crash was pretty bad. I mean, it was an okay movie, but definitely not academy award material. The fact it is put up on such a pedestal only amplifies the bad and makes an average movie even worse. The only thing redeeming it really was the cast.

I am a pretty solid movie buff so I have seen most of these films. However most people I know have not. I think this really is one of hollywood's worst years. I actually forgot the oscars were on until someone phoned me and told me they were over.

The only award I'm really glad to see handed out was for Hoffman. Not only did he tear that fucking movie up, Hoffman should receive an academy award for best actor every year regardless of if he was in a movie or not.

I watched the awards, but I haven't seen one single nominated film except for a couple of the special effects ones. It was a pretty lame duck year as far as I'm concerned. I do want to see a few of the films that were nominated, but no pressing desires.

RE: Stewart as host. I thought he did well. People expected him to be his usual self, throwing off nasty politicized jokes left and right like he does on his show. But.. it's not his show. People get angry when the Oscar's go political (see: Michael Moore), funny or not. For his first outting, he had to be tame. I hope they give him another shot at it as he'll be able to improve on this one, and being a return host he'll no doubt feel a bit more freedom to be more "him".

Funniest moments: The "campaign ads" for the nominees. The opening bit with the past hosts. Steve Carrel & Will Ferrel. And, amazingly enough, Ben Stillers green unitard. Stewart's introduction of the Wilson brothers was pretty great too. Something along the lines of "And now two talented brothers. And I just realized that could be an introduction for the Baldwin's too." Smoove :)

edit. AGH! I can't believe I forgot Tomlin and Streep's introduction for Robert Altman. Was fucking brilliant.
