New Conservative Government In Canada

Post by Kilrain »

Wow, what a stunning victory...

I think I was one of the only people in Toronto to vote Conservative. If I said that that fact made me sick it would be an understatement.

Ok... I exaggerate... maybe half a dozen others in Toronto voted Tory. PFFT!

The Liberals should not only be thrown from power, most of them should be put in jail. The fact that they won over 100 seats is...

I don't need to explain my views.

Every single one of you that voted Liberal need to explain your's.

I wait...

I had a reply written but then realized "what the fuck am I doing?" Your post risks making Atokal look well spoken.

My view is easy to explain. I'll take a couple of hundred million dollars in scandal money over a bunch of corrupt wanna be american politicians like steven harper fucking up my country worse than the liberals could do if they tried.

I consider it a sanity tax.

Ask me again in 14 months when the ban gay marriage and criminalize pot again as well as fucking up our economy and recovering health care system, and piss off canadians. then the liberals and NDP can force another election so jack layton can waste some more of supporter's money trying to look like he's an actual relevant politician.

Good for Harper. Canada needed some new ideas and we got them.

I havta say that I'm watching his speech and he's looking very much like a Prime Minister. Much more so that I've ever seen him.
The liberal party need to get to work an rebuild now.

At the beginning of this, tell me I would've voted conservative, I would've laughed in your face but being a single income home with a child under the age of 6, their platform for child care and targetted tax cuts will help us if they follow through.

*edit* On a side note, Martin announced in his speech that he won't lead the Liberals through another election.

I will happily review the liberals again next election. They needed a shake-up and that's what they're going to get. Think of it as tough love. Except in this case, the cliche would be more akin to "I hope this doesn't hurt us more than it hurts you".

NDP got my vote, but i vote more for the MP than the party, and Alexa's done well for us for 3 terms. Not sure who i'd have voted for if it was strictly for parties.

I really hope this government stays up for the 4 years. I'd be REALLY pissed if we had to go to the polls again in 2008.

Not a chance.
As soon as Harper fucks up (probably soon) and the Liberals get a new leader, we'll be doing this shit all over again.

Speaking of which.. I dunno what type of miracle happened in Newmarket-Aurora but Belinda Stronach managed to get re-elected under the Liberal banner.

Think she'll be running for the job?

Be VERY careful of this thinking... I voted Republican in the 2000 election because I thought the Democrats in America needed a shake up (which they still do) but the look at the outcome? The world and all of us would be in a much better place if Gore had won in 2000 (which actually we know now that he did). My bet is that we would right now be considering a UN move on Iraq or Iran but we would have 2000+ more Americans, Bin Laden would probably be dead (because we would have only gone after him), America would have less tenn pregencies, less abortions and Karl Rover (Satan himself) wouldn't be hanging out in my White House.

fixed that for you Miir.

And Marb, your Republican example doesn't apply in this case. The Liberal party was drifting farther left and making deals with the extreme left to maintain power, whereas the Conservative party policy was more center oriented (note this is PARTY not LEADER). The religious right in Canada is no where near as strong and thus social conservatism is (thankfully) weaker.

With as weak a minority as this is, I'll be surprised if it lasts 18 months.

edit: had wrong word in place in last sentence. This is a minority parliament not a majority, as much as some may have wished otherwise.

The thing is, Harper will pretty much have to maintain the status quo if he hopes to remain in power. There's not chance any of the things Kyou mentioned will happen with such a small minority.

Most of Kyou's rant wouldn't have happened if he had a majority (exception of re-criminalize pot), but she's in BC and they were actually stupid enough to elect more NDP extremists...

You had nothing written. Yet another witty reply that doesn't just risk making you look stupid.

Again I agree with Wulfs statement above.

Harper is not the scary monster that many painted him to be. Hopefully some of his ideas will be passed on merit and not cockblocked for political gain.

Interestingly enough Harper may have to court the Bloc for a majority, hmmm.

Only if we're attacked by militants from Greenland.

The conservatives took votes from the Bloc. It isn't in the Bloc's self interest to help the PCs.

I'm fairly happy with the results.

The liberals get the wrist slap they deserve. They should count themselves lucky they didn't get treated like the PCs of 93. If the Conservatives weren't such nut jobs they would have been punished more severely.

The conservatives have no power to do anything and with no natural allies the only items they will be able to get through are items of popular support. I just hope they continue paying down the national debt and don't go crazy on popular but expensive items.

The bloc got punched in the nose by the conservatives. With 40% support in Quebec you won't have to hear about possible referendums anytime soon.

The NDP did well. While I would never want to see the NDP forming the government it is good to have a leftist party with some power to balance things out and reign in our corporate lapdog governments.

We'll be doing this again in less than 2 years, 2 fairly uneventful years. I'll predict a forgiven\forgotten Liberal majority next time.
