I was going to ask everyone what they do for a living, but realized it would be a string of boring IT-related jobs that no one really cares about.
So, I thought I'd ask, if you could choose another career, what would it be? Assume that you have the proper resources, such as specialized training/schooling, that you would need for your new career.
For me, I think it would be a toss up between writing literary criticism or reviewing cosmetics.

If I could afford the pay cut , I would go back into the weather field. It was my job for 4 years in the AF and then 5 years after that working for the Navy as a civilian. I couldnt do just normal weather though , It would have to be like it was for me in the beggining. I was working in very specialized areas, like , Aircraft testing and then weapons testing after that. I could never go back to just simple boring airfield weather. After that , if I could choose another it would be Air Traffic Controll. Anybody remember Pushing Tin ? well Multiply the drinkin they did by about 50 and you have the real controllers.

if I won the lottery or something, I'd probably move to new zealand or ibiza or something and just spin records all day... in fact it's kind of funny, I was considering this very topic the other day at work during one of my frequent right click-animate cubicle jam sessions with clippit....
Couple choices for me... either be a professor of music education or, if I were going for the big guns, I'd try and be the first female asian conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Or play for them

Zoe: No one's gonna force you to go, Jayne. As has been stated -- this job's strictly speculative. Jayne: Good. Cause I don't know these folks, don't much care to. Mal: They're whores. Jayne: I'm in.
I ran a watch/clock repair shop for a year when I was in the Navy. I liked the work, it was nice and quiet and folks (generally) left me alone to take care of business. Customer service issues didn't come up and nothing was ever an emergrency.
Watch repair is fun, I still do it as a hobby, it won't pay the bills though.
Then I made the mistake of telling someone at work I played with Unix at home in '92. It's been an odd ride ever since. Career changes by accident/chance conversation have been the rule.

I'd like to be a physician of some sort. Either specializing in ob/gyn or working for the CDC doing research on killer viruses such as ebola or hanta. I also think forensic science looks very interesting.
2 choices for me, i'd love to own and run my own bar - although it would probably be dangerous for my liver, man would that be a great time.
2nd choice would be a professional sports announcer, i've done it on the side a bit before but never made it to where I was making enough money to live on
I got canned from my IT job for telling one of 10,000 middle managers to fuck off. Best thing that ever happened to me! I moved back to the Keys, and while the money isn't as good as in Tampa, it's really nice to only have one boss
My point? Sometimes it's not what you do, it's where ya do it.

I'd do nothing - or everything. Getting paid to flitter around the world doing whatever I damn well pleased would own.
If I had to actually do something.. I'd be a multi-lingual chef! Travelling all around the world snagging yummy food recipes and being able to converse with the people that make them in their own language would be really neat.
I'd have my own adult video store. However, it would be quite different than any I have ever seen. I would have weekly classes which covered various sexual practices and proceedures. I would sell all forms of off the wall specialty items as well as have a twice a year bazaar where people could sell their wares to others. (there's lots of old-school craftmanship in these circles) Basically, my store would be an environment of sexuality, where people could relax around like-minded individuals if they so choose.
If I knew and understood it all too well, I guess I would get into stocks. Though you may scoff at me due to the economy status, people are still making assloads of money. And still find time to play golf.
If I needed to pay the bills and had to work, I'd write fiction, hard sci-fi and some fantasy. IF the talent was there, a laptop, your imagination, and a lounge chair on the beach isn't a bad way to go for a job. (don't give me shit about editing, deadlines etc...this is a fantasy thread : )
For pure money jobs, daytrading isn't bad. No boss and great work hours. Cash out each night and you have no worries while not working.
For jobs that sound cool but probably suck ass if you actually do them, archeology or paleontology might be personally rewarding instead of just making money. Being a scientist, inventor or innovator also ranks high on my list of cool jobs.
I wouldn't mind doing the daytrading thing, you can still do it during rough times, just need to choose different companies.
I also would go back to my old job in a heartbeat if it wasn't a huge paycut. Arcade Manager! You get to boss people around and play games for free all day! Plus, all the cute girls from Filenes (sp) come and beg you for change!

You can choose the same companies but short the stock. The worst thing you can do in daytrading is get attached to a stock. Be heartless, be inhuman, have a steamroller mentality and you'll do fine...and don't give your friends stock tips because at some point they'll be wrong. You're doing yourself and them a favor by not saying anything. (that's for daytrades, not for long term investments)
Daytrading is 100% you. There's no one to blame or pat on the back but yourself. If you scored well on that Spear Chucking game posted here awhile ago you'll do well making all the speed clicks required for fast trading.
Thinking about it a bit more, professional student.
Learning just about anything is fun, if the teacher knows and enjoys the subject. I've taught a few times and really loved it. Don't know that I'd want to teach long term, it's a lot more work than you'd think.

Definetly run my own bar. I bartended and ran a bar for about 10 years. Bartended in dance clubs, country bars, karaoke bars and yea even a strip bar.. bartending I'd have 2 bars in same building... sports bar on one side and a dance club on other. Already have the layout in my mind heh.
If not that, then Massage Therapist... love giving massages so why not get paid for it to!

Inquiring minds wanna know....
would you personally teach the anal sex class?
I would actually love to be a director of a community center. I volunteered for a community center and had the time of my life. Running organized sports, tutoring and helping out the neighborhoods of inner city kids gives me joy and a peace inside that I had never felt before. I love fund raisers and getting people involved. I would love to be the man in charge of such a thing.
I'd restore old sports cars....I like some of the new ones, but damn, cant beat an old muscle car. It's nice to work with your hands and see something at the end.
Probably not. I could give my 2 cents and share my opinions/experiances, but there are people more qualified than me to actaully teach that type of stuff. Then again, this thread assumes I am rich with OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of time on my hands, I may just go out and get those credentials!
Sexuality amazes me. If I could make a living out of it in one way or another it would be a pretty sweet deal.

My 2nd to last semester of college, I started looking at graduate Psychology programs because I was intent on making my way in world of sex therapy. I was disuaded by the actual course material because it was mostly generic psychology material (very few sex therapy programs in this country) and extremely heavy on the research side (as opposed to the theoretical discussion/application side). Plus, I realized that even if I was a sex therapist I wouldn't necessarily have a job like Dr Drew
But I totally know what you mean; its a fascinating subject...
